GLOBAL REACH: Georgetown Center Julius Halaifonua Impresses at U19 World Cup

Yahooa day ago
Fans of the Georgetown Hoyas think they know Julius Halaifonua pretty well, despite his injury, but whether even the most faithful diehards could predict that Julius would be balling this summer is hard to tell. The starting center for New Zealand turned in some solid performances and showed off his efficiency. Heads are starting to turn.
Halaifonua averaged 10.6 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 2.0 APG, and 1.6 BPG in 19.3 MPG over 7 games (4-3) for the fourth-placed New Zealand squad. The Kiwis finished behind the USA, Germany, and Slovenia.
In case you had not heard, Ed Cooley made the trip.

This lesbian WNBA power couple just got signed to the same team and fans are cheering

This lesbian WNBA power couple just got signed to the same team and fans are cheering The Phoenix Mercury officially inked 16-year veteran Dewanna Bonner on Tuesday, just two weeks after the Indiana Fever waived her. The move doesn't just bring a two-time champion back to the desert—it realigns one of the league's most beloved queer pairings, reuniting Bonner with her fiancée and longtime running mate Alyssa Thomas. Bonner, 37, spent her first decade in Phoenix before stops in Connecticut and a brief, rocky stint with Indiana (7.1 ppg in nine games). She asked out of Indy on June 25, saying the ' fit did not work out ' at this stage in her career. Advertisement Once she cleared waivers, league insiders assumed a homecoming was inevitable. ESPN reports the Mercury had room to slot her at the veteran minimum after waiving a rookie to clear the roster spot. After the announcement, Bonner posted a glammed-up photo of herself on her Instagram, captioned, 'long story short, I'm home.' Fans embraced the news with open arms. 'You're back where u should be!! Back where it all began!!' wrote one fan. 'I'm so happy DB is back in Arizona, and I can't wait to see her on the court,' wrote another. Thomas, traded to Phoenix during the offseason, has already electrified the X-Factor with a 15-point, 10-rebound, 15-assist triple-double, her 16th overall and first in a Mercury uniform. Fans at that game erupted when Bonner appeared courtside next to team brass, then again when the franchise confirmed her signing the following day. Advertisement The duo last shared a locker room in Connecticut, where they fell in love and got engaged over All-Star weekend 2023. A year of long-distance followed before this midsummer plot twist brought them back under one organizational roof. On-court, Phoenix gains depth for a playoff push: Bonner ranks third all-time in WNBA scoring and still owns matchup-busting length on the wing, while Thomas orchestrates the offense and piles up defensive rebounds. Off-court, the Mercury now boast one of the league's most high-profile queer couple.s Another win for visibility in a season that's become must-watch for LGBTQ+ fans! Dylan Harper's Addition to Spurs Might Infuriate Victor Wembanyama Critics

Dylan Harper's Addition to Spurs Might Infuriate Victor Wembanyama Critics originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Last season, in just 46 games with the San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembanyama emerged as one of the very best players in the NBA regardless of age, experience, or position. Advertisement Averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 3.8 blocks per game, he is as well-rounded on both ends of the floor as anyone in the league, and he took 8.8 3-pointers a game, making a league-average 35.2 percent of them. Wembanyama is listed as 7-3, although he is likely closer to 7-5, so it made sense that some vocal fans were frustrated about him shooting more 3s per game than James Harden or Trae Young. Those fans should get used to the idea of Wembanyama being a sniper from deep, however, as the addition of Dylan Harper will only pull him further out from the paint. In his lone season at Rutgers University, Harper shot 33.3 percent from deep, which, for a guard, is not great. His 38.3 percent mark from deep on catch-and-shoot attempts is his saving grace, although he will likely create for himself plenty off the dribble. He shot around 30 percent from deep on off-the-dribble 3s, so if he's pulling up like Stephen Curry, expect the rim to take some abuse. However, he was elite at getting to the rim and making shots in the paint, shooting a blistering 67 percent at the rim. Advertisement That's only one percent worse than Wemby was in the same zone last season. With Harper willing and able to get downhill, it stands to reason that Wemby will be outside the paint, spacing the floor for the athletic guard. Harper is an excellent passer, so if he can't get a shot off or is met at the rim by one of the NBA's best, expect him to kick the ball out to Wembanyama with ease. Wemby only took 36 corner 3s last season and made only a third of them, so he will likely be on the wing more than in the corner. Either way, his volume could go up from last season, and his loudest critics won't enjoy that. However, with the Spurs expected to be in the playoff hunt next season, wins matter a lot more than Wemby's shot chart, and with the playoffs in grasp, maybe an increased perimeter usage will be an easier pill to swallow.
