Flooding risk persists at Uppalwadi RUB

Nagpur: As incessant rains lashed the city on Monday, the scene at Uppalwadi railway underbridge (RUB) — infamous for waterlogging in monsoon — on Kamptee Road in north Nagpur revived memories of flooding in the RUB left vehicles stuck in knee-deep water and caused traffic snarls stretching for kilometres. By Monday noon, there was ankle-deep water on the Nagpur-bound side of the RUB, while the Kamptee-bound lane was on the verge of flooding. Daily commuters like Sachin Khobragade, a grocer who waded through the rising waters on his two-wheeler, said, "It's a gamble every monsoon. One misstep, and you are stuck in muck." Nearby, the crater-like potholes at Automotive Chowk further slowed down traffic. Senior inspector Satish Ade of Kapil Nagar police station, who led a proactive response, said, "We are coordinating with the civic body and MahaMetro, which is carrying out construction nearby." Joint commissioner of police Navinchandra Reddy issued early warnings, and water pumps were kept on standby to combat potential flooding. However, ongoing civic work add uncertainty. "If the rain persists, there could be major trouble in the night," Ade said. With the showers showing little signs of slowing down, most shops in the markets of North Nagpur, like Jaripatka and Kamal Chowk, remained shut, and there were less-than-usual vehicles on the road. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Residents mostly stayed indoors. "Why risk going out?" said a former govt employee. Surprisingly, the slums along Pili Nadi in Yashodhara Nagar area escaped waterlogging by afternoon. Meanwhile, the Gaddigodam RUB, another perennial trouble spot, was submerged, bringing traffic to a crawl. Local businesses felt the sting. A tea stall owner near Gaddigodam said, "With rainwater, grease and oil from makeshift garages on the footpath also flow on the road." But police and volunteers patrolled the streets, while civic workers monitored drainage systems to prevent waterlogging.

Traffic crawls, flash flooding as heavy rain lashes city pockets

1 2 3 4 5 6 Kolkata: After a gloomy sky and intermittent rain on the first day of the week, the Met office has predicted similar weather for Kolkata on Tuesday. Some pockets in the city, mostly in south Kolkata, were lashed by heavy rain during a short spell, causing flash flooding and traffic congestion. While most parts of the city received light rain, the intermittent showers made traffic crawl on Maa flyover, affecting vehicular movement along EM Bypass. According to data by KMC's drainage department, Jodhpur Park pumping station recorded a high rain count of 115 mm till 8 pm, of which 95 mm occurred within two hours between 4 pm and 6 pm. Neighbouring Ballygunge, however, recorded only 15 mm during the same period, while Kamdahari in the southern fringes recorded 46 mm of rain. Traffic was affected throughout the day, especially on stretches like Maa flyover, AJC Bose Road, and EM Bypass. The worst affected was the Bypass and its connecting roads like PC Connector, Kasba Connector, Anwar Shah Connector, Dhakuria, Jodhpur Park, and Rashbehari, where waterlogging was reported in the evening. Techno Mag Learn More Undo The slow movement was also visible between VIP Bazar and Science City. Sources said this was partly due to slow movement on Maa flyover. "During rains, the average speed drops, and vehicles increase the distance between one another on the flyover. We also had two-wheeler riders stopping on the ramps under the Garia-bound ramps to shelter themselves from the rains. We deployed a force of eight personnel in pouring rain to keep the traffic moving," said an officer at Lalbazar. "The tail kept moving, albeit extremely slowly, from Kadapara till about Moila Khal post 9.30 am as Maa flyover (Park Circus bound flank) could not withstand the pressure. There was initially some pressure in the morning school hours, but when the rains picked up later in the day, at the peak office hours, movement became slower," said a cop at Chingrighata. With vehicles trying to take Maa flyover from Ruby flyover also getting stuck, those moving east towards Chingrighata from Ruby got stuck too, said traffic officials. By evening, with rain picking up, several parts of Kolkata witnessed slower traffic, including stretches like PTS crossing, Moulali, and Park Circus. The worst traffic deadlock was all along Bypass, where six spots saw waterlogging along with PC Connector and Lake Gardens flyover. Stretches of Burdwan Road, DH Road, and Rashbehari crossing also witnessed jams. Senior officers had to hit the roads with sergeants to ensure movement continued on these stretches. A low-pressure area, along with a cyclonic circulation and a monsoon trough, triggered spells of rain in Kolkata on Monday, pushing down the maximum temperature slightly further. "We can expect similar conditions of cloudy sky along with intermittent rain in Kolkata on Tuesday. While some isolated places in a few districts could be lashed by intense spells, in Kolkata we can expect light to moderate rain," said HR Biswas, head, Weather Forecast Section at Regional Meteorological Centre Kolkata. KMC officials pressed heavy pumps to flush out stormwater from waterlogged areas like Lake Gardens, Jodhpur Park, and Dhakuria and adjacent neighbourhoods. Portable pumps were pressed into service in the added areas like Behala and neighbourhoods off the EM Bypass.

Delhi rains: IndiGo, SpiceJet issue advisory; adverse weather forces Air India to divert flight to Jaipur

Heavy rainfall in several parts of Delhi on Monday disrupted flight schedules at the national capital's Indira Gandhi International Airport. The adverse weather conditions have prompted airlines like IndiGo and SpiceJet to issue a travel advisory. In another disruption, the rains have also forced an Air India flight operating from Riyadh to Delhi to divert to Jaipur. Air India flight AI 926, operating from Riyadh to Delhi, was diverted to Jaipur International Airport late Sunday night due to bad weather in Delhi. The diverted flight was originally scheduled to land at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) post-midnight on July 7. However, the deteriorating weather in Delhi forced the airline to reroute the flight to Jaipur. According to ANI, after the landing at Jaipur airport, passengers were offered alternative flights to reach Delhi. However, they opted to depart by road from Jaipur to Delhi. The low-cost carrier Indigo said on Monday that the persistent bad weather in Delhi is affecting flight operations. 'Due to air traffic congestion, some flights are currently being held. Please be assured, our teams are working closely with air traffic control and will get you moving as soon as conditions allow,' the airline said on X (formerly Twitter). Indigo also advised passengers to check their flight status on its website before heading to the airport. It said they should expect some extra travel time as traffic is likely to be slow-moving. In another instance, SpiceJet, a domestic airline, also issued a travel advisory on the social media platform X. 'Due to bad weather (heavy rain) in Delhi (DEL), all departures, arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected. Passengers are requested to check their flight status,' the airline said in a post on Monday.
