‘Ma, are you crazy?': Helen Zille's sons react to Showmax Roast

DA leader Helen Zille admitted she had no idea what a comedy roast was when she was first approached about becoming the next celebrity to be roasted on Showmax.
'When I told my sons, they said, 'Ma, do you even know what a Roast is?' And I had to admit, 'No, I don't. What is it?' They were like, 'Ma, are you crazy? You're putting yourself out there for a toasting! You're going to be chewed up.' I said, 'That's fine. I get chewed up every day,' said Zille, narrating how her two sons took the news of her being roasted.
The Showmax Roast of Helen Zille premieres this Friday on Showmax, and Zille spoke to the media about participating in the show, which is premised on a celebrity being made fun of by other celebrities.
In 2024, media personality Minnie Dlamini was roasted.
Zille's roast featured former Comics Choice Comic of the Year Loyiso Gola, media personalities Bongani Bingwa, JJ Tabane and Rian van Heerden, reality TV stars Londie London and Mel Viljoen.
Zille admits that when Showmax approached her about the roast, she thought she was invited for lunch. 'They said, 'Do you want to do a Roast?' and I thought, 'That's like a Sunday lunch – sure!'

Zille not taking herself too seriously
The controversial politician said she took part because she wanted to show her grandchildren that she could have fun and not take herself too seriously.
'I have this image of being such a fierce and terrible person — someone unable to take a joke – and of course, that's not true. I'd like them [grandkids] to know a bit more about the real me, all the different sides. Especially the fact that we need to be able to laugh at ourselves.'
Speaking about some of the celebrities who participated in the roast, Zille said she found them interesting and that they are 'good at what they do.'
However, she is honest about not knowing the reality TV personalities London and Viljoen.
'The only people I have no clue about are The Real Housewives – Mel Viljoen and Londie London. I don't know if they're from Desperate Housewives or The Real Housewives,' said Zille.
'I know nothing about that world, so that'll be new for me. But the rest I know, and I think they'll handle this kind of exchange well.'
The Showmax Roast of Helen Zille was part of the Laugh Africa Comedy Festival at the Sandton Convention Centre in early May.

CAPE TOWN - Democratic Alliance (DA) member of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Security and Justice, Nicholas Gotsell, has welcomed reports that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has decided to charge a Nigerian rapper for crashing his McLaren in Sea Point in March. The musician, known as 3GAR Baby, is expected to appear in a Cape Town court soon for crashing his luxury supercar at high speed. It's believed that the Nigerian rapper, whose real name is Prince Daniel Obioma, was driving at over 200km/h when he lost control of his vehicle and slammed into a pavement on High Level Road on 1 March. Photos of him with blood gushing down his face circulated on social media shortly after the crash. Gotsell said the wheels of justice were finally turning after months of pressure on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to investigate the matter. "Over the past months, Cape Town and surrounds have been plagued by serious incidents involving luxury vehicles. Nobody, not even a so-called celebrity, is above the law." It's understood that a passenger was also injured in the accident.

Reality TV gone rogue: unpacking the crime and corruption of 'Trainwreck: P. I. Moms'

Moms', where real-life events were so dramatic that they could easily pass as a telenovela. The Netflix series, which premiered in July, is one of the latest in the streaming giant's 'Trainwreck' franchise. But this offering stands out for its shock value as it centres around working moms whose noble desire to inspire women across the globe, as the show notes, was 'to undo the deeds of a few men.' This explosive doccie has also been captivating viewers with its harrowing tale of rampant criminal activities, internal sabotage and police corruption as it delivers a neatly compressed but highly entertaining rollercoaster ride. Directed by Phil Bowman, 'Trainwreck: P.I. Moms' takes viewers back to the early 2010s. Amid the reality television boom following the monumental success of 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians' and 'The Real Housewives' franchise, the Lifetime network greenlit a reality TV series about San Francisco mothers, Michelle Allen, Charmagne Peters, Denise Antoon, and Ami Wilt, who were working as private investigators. The network, which hired acclaimed showrunner Lucas Platt, also believed that the manner in which the ladies balanced motherhood could empower other women. Their dangerous work at Private Investigations, Inc., which included undercover operations and busting criminals, also saw them featured in 'People' as well as 'The Today Show' and 'Dr. Phil.' With the attention from Lifetime, which saw the series having massive viral potential as well as possible franchise options, the moms agreed to be in the show. They only had one condition - that the reality series would focus on inspiring storytelling, instead of pitting women against each other. Lifetime agreed with this perspective and hired a crew to start shooting. The moms were thrilled to get started, with filming for the pilot getting off to an emotional start as one of the women detailed the harrowing death of her son while she was getting a tattoo in his honour. But that's basically where any positivity ended, and what followed was chaos and mayhem. The cracks at the firm began to show with the first problem being Carl Marino, the agency's director of operations, whose desire to be a star resulted in him pleading with producers for him to be a main character. Marino was so enraged when they refused that he tipped off a suspect that the moms were about to bust while the crew were filming. Even more sinister was that Marino had a secret operation going with the firm's founder, Chris Butler, who was also a main character in the Lifetime series. With a law enforcement background, he was celebrated for hiring women and giving them such a platform. He initially presented himself as a passionate professional, but soon into filming, producers noted his awkward nature but didn't think much of it. But unbeknownst to them, the firm's clients, the moms working there, and the world at large, Butler and Marino had a shady side hustle which saw them working with a crooked cop to resell drugs that had been seized as evidence by the police. To make matters worse, this scandal was brought to light by a reporter, who, after doing some investigative work on the firm following a tip-off. These explosive revelations, which went on to make international headlines at the time, resulted in the reality show being canned before it even aired.
