Is this book a breakup memoir? A murder mystery? Both?

Almost two decades ago, while I was trying to find my footing as a writer — roving between the provinces of prose and poetry — I picked up 'The Poetry Home Repair Manual' by Ted Kooser, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who served as poet laureate of the United States from 2004 to 2006. In the years since, I've often pulled it down from my bookshelf to reread one line: 'A carefully controlled metaphor, like any clearly observed association of two dissimilar things or events, can excite the responses of readers because it gives them a glimpse of an order that they might not otherwise have become aware of.'

Robert Wilson Expanded Our Sense of Theatrical Possibility

Robert Wilson's productions floated into theaters and opera houses like visitors from another planet. Most audiences, particularly in the United States, were — and still are — used to realistic theater, with clear settings, plots and characters. For 60 years, Wilson, who died on Thursday at 83, infuriated some and inspired many others by abandoning conventional narrative and conceiving, directing and designing works that were closer to long, enigmatic poems. Wilson's style was glacial in its pace. Very little would happen very slowly. His scenery was minimal, yet the backdrops glowed with blue light; the effect was spare yet lush. The performers' faces were often whitened with makeup, like Japanese Noh actors, clowns or mimes. Their posture was rigid; their movements, formal, deliberate, almost ritualistic. Stiff gestures would be frozen for agonizing stretches. A Wilson show was a paradox: an austere spectacle. Stylish and mysterious, his work was precisely calibrated, yet open-ended in its possible meanings. You tended not to be able to forget the experience, the look, the slowness. He expanded our sense of what could happen on a stage by starkly limiting the action. In a climactic scene from 'Einstein on the Beach,' his profoundly influential, nearly five-hour collaboration with the composer Philip Glass from 1976, a 30-foot bar of light gradually rotated from horizontal to vertical, then rose into the flies. That was it. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

A new video game set in "Philabieldia" is getting love from Philadelphia residents

By naming its game world "Philabieldia," did a Japanese video game developer just give a shoutout to the real-life city of Philadelphia? That's how some local gamers are interpreting a recent trailer. Nintendo held a Nintendo Direct event on Thursday, announcing several new games coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 console from partner developers. And one game by Square Enix, "The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales," is getting some attention from Philadelphians. "This is Philabieldia, a continent overrun by beast tribes," a narrator says in a trailer for the game, as the name "Philabieldia" appears on the screen. Social media posters screenshotted away, noticing the closeness to the City of Brotherly Love immediately. "It's always sunny in Philabieldia," said many an X user. Others opted for the retro reference, "in West Philabieldia, born and raised." "Still in disbelief over the mystical Square-Enix world being named Philabieldia. Can't wait for DLC in Clenver, Bolorado," the streamer Coney posted. "It's an hour away from New Jebdey," remarked another user. To be sure, beasts do roam here, and they are ready to defend their Super Bowl title. But the world of Philabieldia seems rather medieval, lacking skyscrapers or any massive arena where Philabieldians and New Jebdeyans alike could gather and watch some Eagles stomp other beasts like Bears and Lions. If you are craving a video game set in the real Philadelphia, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 features a LOVE Park level (as it was before the park's 2016 redesign). The first-person shooter "Homefront: The Revolution" is set in a Philadelphia that is occupied by the North Korean army, and you play as a rebel protagonist trying to start a revolution and take the city back. "The Adventures of Elliot" is a role-playing game featuring a graphical style similar to other Square Enix hits, "Octopath Traveler" and "Bravely Default." A demo of the game is already available for download on the Nintendo eShop, with a full release set for 2026.
