Kannada learning centres to be set up in Dharwad for govt, PSU officials

Dharwad: In a bid to help non-Kannada speaking officials communicate effectively with locals, Kannada Development Authority (KDA) will soon establish Kannada learning centres in Dharwad, modelled on similar initiatives running successfully in Bengaluru.
KDA chairman Purushottam Bilimale said in Dharwad on Wednesday that officials from other states posted to Karnataka often face language barriers, which in turn leads to communication gaps and conflicts with the locals.
To address these issues, KDA launched Kannada learning centres in Bengaluru, and nearly 20 such centres are already functioning, he said. Now it is planned to open at least five centres in Dharwad district.
These centres will offer a 36-hour crash course focused on basic Kannada conversational skills, Bilimale said.
He expressed satisfaction over the implementation of Kannada name boards in about 75% of business establishments in Dharwad district. However, he noted that the compliance in Hubballi, being a major commercial hub, was relatively lower.
"During discussions, a suggestion was made to link trade license renewals to Kannada signage compliance.

We are optimistic that the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation commissioner will consider implementing this rule," he said.
The KDA has also proposed naming roads on the Karnatak University campus after eminent scholars and activists who have significantly contributed to the university's development. "The university's new vice-chancellor has assured us of its implementation," the KDA chief said.
Withdrawal of cases
Addressing the issue of legal cases filed against Kannada activists, Bilimale said the KDA has directed all deputy commissioners across the state to compile and submit a list of activists who faced legal action for participating in pro-Kannada agitations. "Once we receive these lists, we will take up the matter with the state government and seek withdrawal of these cases in the interest of justice and linguistic rights," he stated.

China's exports of rare earth magnets to the U.S. skyrocket in June

The subsequent sharp falls in shipments in April and May, due to the lengthy times required to secure export licences had rattled global suppliers, forcing some automakers outside China to halt partial production due to shortage of rare earths. Live Events In total, China exported 3,188 tons of rare earth permanent magnets last month, up 157.5% from 1,238 tons in May, although the June volume was still 38.1% lower than the corresponding month in 2024. Shipments of magnets are likely to recover further in July as more exporters obtained licences in June, analysts said. During the first half of 2025, exports of rare earth magnets fell 18.9% on the year to 22,319 tons.

The new bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha, has a word count of 2.6 lakh, lower than 5.12 lakh in the I-T Act. The number of sections is 536, as against 819 effective sections in the existing law. Live Events The number of chapters has also been halved to 23 from 47, according to the FAQs (frequently asked questions) issued by the I-T department. The Income Tax Bill 2025 has 57 tables, compared to 18 in the existing Act and removed 1,200 provisos and 900 explanations. Provisions relating to exemptions and TDS/TCS have been made crispier in the Bill by putting them in a tabular format, while the chapter for not-for-profit organisations has been made comprehensive with use of plain language. As a result of this, the word count has come down by 34,547. In a taxpayer-friendly move, the Bill replaces the term 'previous year' as mentioned in the Income Tax Act, 1961 with 'tax year'. Also, the concept of assessment year has been done away with. Currently, for income earned in the previous year (say 2023-24), tax is paid in assessment year (say 2024-25). This previous year and assessment year (AY) concept has been removed and only tax year under the simplified bill has been brought in. While introducing the Bill in the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman had said that "substantial changes" have been made in the Bill. The number of words have been halved from 5.12 lakh, and sections reduced from 819 to 236. Following introduction, the Bill was referred to the select committee of the Lok Sabha and the committee was mandated to submit its report by the first day of next session. The Monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled to sit from July 21 to August 21, 2025.

The orphan man was once Bombay's biggest merchant, received 'Knight' title by Queen Victoria, donated all his money to... he was...

In 19th-century India, creating a name for both trade and social service was a challenging task. However, an orphaned Parsi boy, Indian, was able to create history through hard work, vision, and benevolence. His name was Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy. Jamsetjee was born on July 15, 1783, in Bombay (now Mumbai) to a common Parsi family. After the early death of both parents, Jamsetjee lived with his uncle. Born into poverty and a lack of formal education, Jamsetjee carved out his life through sheer willpower and intellect. Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy was just 15 years old when he entered the world of commerce. He initially worked with his uncle to gain experience in the trade of opium and cotton. A few years in, he started his own company and expanded his trade overseas, including to China. Before long, he was one of the leading merchants of Bombay (now Mumbai) and well-respected. However, Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy was not solely known as a prosperous businessman. He invested many years of his life in social service. His legacy rests in the creation of the JJ Hospital and the JJ School of Art, both of which he financed to a very considerable degree. Jamsetjee's philanthropy extended beyond the Parsi community, but he assisted people of all religions and communities. He set up dharamshalas (rest houses), schools, orphanages, and other educational facilities. The sum of money he contributed in those days was in lakhs of rupees, a sum that would be equivalent to probably crores today, and an extraordinary legacy of generosity and social service. In 1842, he was knighted by Queen Victoria and in 1857 given a hereditary baronetcy; in both cases he was the first Indian subject to receive these honours, as reported by the Royal Collection Trust's official website. Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy has been described as 'the most famous Parsi of his time and perhaps the first famous non-European colonial subject' because of his honours and public charity. According to the Sir JJ School of Arts, after a preliminary visit to Calcutta, he undertook a voyage to China, then fraught with so much difficulty and risk that it was regarded as a venture betokening considerable enterprise and courage; and he subsequently initiated a systematic trade with that country, being himself the carrier of his merchant wares on his passages to and fro between Bombay and Canton and Shanghai. 'His second return voyage from China was made in one of the East India Company's fleet, which, under the command of Sir Nathaniel Dance, defeated the French squadron under Admiral Linois (Feb. 15, 1804),' reads the official website of Sir JJ School of Arts. It further added, 'The total of his known benefactions amounted at the time of his death, which took place in 1859, to over 230,000. It was not, however, the amount of his charities so much as the period and circumstances in which they were performed that made his benevolent career worthy of the fame he won.'
