This question captures the strategic dilemma facing organizations today: What is the best approach for investing resources toward AI capabilities? When should companies build AI capabilities in-house versus purchasing external solutions? The answer isn't as simple as choosing one over the other.
Organizations are rejecting the binary build-or-buy question in favor of more nuanced approaches. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), only 13% of IT leaders plan to build AI models from scratch, while 53% intend to start with pretrained models and augment them with enterprise data. Plan for 12-24 month development cycles with iterative releases that allow for continuous feedback and refinement.

Successful blending requires sophisticated architectural planning that enables seamless integration between internal and external components. Design modular systems with well-defined interfaces that allow different components to be developed, updated, or replaced independently.
Additionally, develop robust APIs and data exchange protocols that ensure smooth communication between internal systems and external solutions. Pay particular attention to data security and compliance requirements, especially when integrating cloud-based external services with internal systems containing sensitive information.
Establish clear governance structures that define ownership and accountability for different system components, and create cross-functional teams responsible for integration oversight, performance monitoring, and strategic evolution of the blended solution.
Plan for ongoing optimization as both internal and external components evolve. Blended solutions require continuous attention to ensure that updates to one component don't disrupt others and that the overall system maintains coherence and performance.

This hybrid approach has resulted in significant improvements in processing efficiency and customer satisfaction scores, demonstrating how strategic blending can maximize return on AI investments.
When to Partner
Strategic partnerships represent a fourth pathway that differs from traditional vendor relationships by providing comprehensive solutions that combine technology, expertise, and ongoing service delivery. This approach is optimal when capabilities are essential but non-differentiating, specialized providers offer superior expertise and technology, or organizations need flexible service models that adapt to changing requirements.
Strategic partnerships require careful provider evaluation based on multiple criteria including technology capabilities, industry expertise, service quality, and cultural alignment. Look for partners who can provide end-to-end solutions rather than just software licenses, including implementation support, ongoing optimization, and strategic consultation.
Establish detailed partnership agreements that go beyond traditional service level agreements to include strategic alignment commitments, innovation collaboration, and mutual performance incentives. These relationships should feel more like extensions of your internal team than external vendor arrangements.
Develop integration strategies that allow partner solutions to work seamlessly with your internal systems while maintaining appropriate security and compliance controls. Success requires more than choosing the right approach for each capability—it demands sophisticated execution including robust project management, careful vendor selection, seamless integration planning, and continuous performance optimization. Organizations must develop internal capabilities to manage these complex implementations while making strategic decisions about where to focus limited resources for maximum competitive advantage.
The strategic question isn't simply whether to build, buy, blend, or partner; it's how to create organizational capabilities that leverage all four strategies appropriately while developing the decision-making frameworks that ensure each approach delivers maximum strategic value. The companies that master this multifaceted approach will not only optimize their AI investments but create sustainable competitive advantages that justify every investment decision.

Mr. Cook will assume oversight for other divisions Mr. Williams ran, including Apple's design, watch and health teams. 'Jeff and I have worked alongside each other for as long as I can remember, and Apple wouldn't be what it is without him,' Mr. Cook said in a statement. 'He's helped to create one of the most respected global supply chains in the world; launched Apple Watch and overseen its development; architected Apple's health strategy; and led our world class team of designers with great wisdom, heart and dedication.' During his 27 years at Apple, Mr. Williams played a leading role in building the company's supply chain. Miracle Mop Inventor Joy Mangano's 18,000-Square-Foot Long Island Home Is Headed to Auction

After failing to sell for $20 million a few years ago, a red brick mansion that dates to the Gilded Age on Long Island's Gold Coast is hitting the auction block. Swan Manor has been owned by the Miracle Mop creator Joy Mangano since 2000, but she's once again trying to part ways with the nine-acre Nissequogue estate. Originally designed by the renowned architect Stanford White back in 1917, few of his elegant details remain. Today, the extensively modernized main house and its outbuildings total a whopping 22,000 square feet, and it's going up for auction with Concierge Auctions and Kyle Roskot of the Agency, with starting bids expected from $4 million to $7 million. Mangano also recently listed the home for $12 million, and it could still sell for that price before hammering down. That drops the price down to $299.99, or $100 off its usual retail price, making it an impressive deal on a battery-powered TV that's designed to be taken outdoors. Back in the day -- we're talking 40 years ago -- portable TVs were a big thing. That's when people would tune into over-the-air signals with a Sony Watchman and watch whatever local TV stations were broadcasting. But with smartphones, tablets and laptops now able to stream content wirelessly, including live TV from apps like YouTube TV and many other services, a portable TV seems like something of a novelty. And to a certain degree, that's just what Skyworth's battery-powered 24-inch P100 Companion Series portable TV is. At a typical list price of $400, it isn't exactly cheap, but it's also the largest portable TV I've ever used, and it's turned my patio into an entertainment oasis. It's also got Chromecast built-in so you can cast to it from an Android phone (I was able to cast the Spectrum TV app to it from my iPhone 16 Pro but had to fiddle around with the settings in my Google Home app to get it to work). And finally, it has an integrated battery that delivers up to 3 hours of battery life in energy-saving mode (the battery life seemed closer to 2 hours in my tests). However, when you start streaming, the picture does appear to be 1080p. You just aren't going to get inky blacks. But it is a matte screen that cuts down on the glare and has a relatively wide viewing angle. The TV is designed to be taken outdoors, though it has no water resistance rating, so you wouldn't want to leave it out in the rain. (Sylvox makes a 15.6-inch portable TV that's apparently waterproof, but it's considerably smaller than this TV). There's a mini soundbar in the base -- Skyworth says the TV is equipped with Dolby Audio -- that can play pretty loud, but the dynamic range is a little narrow. That's a polite way of saying there isn't a whole lot of bass. But again, for casual viewing, it does the job and you could connect a better speaker to it if you wanted to you. You could also connect a streaming device like a Roku 4K Streaming Stick to it. On the side of the TV, you'll find a single HDMI port, a USB port out for power, plus an optical output, 3.5mm auxiliary output and Ethernet port. The TV's connectivity options. David Carnoy/CNET Screwed into the back of TV is a handle made out of faux leather for carrying the TV, which is fairly lightweight at 11 pounds. Skyworth also sells a carrying case for it, which is also currently on sale for $50. Is this a better option than a portable monitor? In some ways, yes. First off, this is bigger than most portable monitors, and to reiterate, the key feature here is the integrated battery (alas, it doesn't appear to be replaceable), so you can view the TV wherever you want (for 2 to 3 hours anyway). I used it on my home Wi-Fi but also connected the TV to my phone's hot spot when I was outside, and it worked fine streaming content. True, it's significantly more expensive than many portable monitors, but the use case for a portable monitor tends to be different.
