How drones, self-driving robots could help with food insecurity in Arlington

The city of Arlington held a demonstration Wednesday, May 14, for a project to integrate technology with the local food bank to improve delivery of food to people with mobility challenges.
The city of Arlington and its partners showed electric and autonomous air and ground vehicles at Julia Burgen Park playground at 1009 Ruby St. They will be used to test the delivery of about 150 boxes of nonperishable food to Arlington households this week.
The event showcased adjustments for the Multimodal Delivery pilot program, a two-year project funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to test and evaluate the use of no-emission or low-emission uncrewed aircraft and ground robots to deliver food to individuals who are underserved.
New data released by Feeding America's Map the Meal Gap, shows Texas surpassed California as the most food insecure state in the country with 5.4 million people who are food insecure. Tarrant County has the 12th largest food insecure population in the country with 337,350 people experiencing food insecurity, the data shows.
The increase in population in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and inflation have hurt working class families, as has inaccessibility in rural communities, said Stephen Raeside, chief external affairs officer of Tarrant Area Food Bank. The Tarrant Area Food Bank serves 13 counties, which take in 10,000 square miles, and delivers 1.5 million meals a week with only 140 employees, creating a logistical challenge, Raeside said.
'We have to be very efficient, adaptable, nimble, and we think delivery through autonomous vehicles could be part of that formula to distribute even more food,' Raeside said.
The project started in October 2023 with a $780,000 grant, with the first year used for planning and preparation. The first demonstration was held in September 2024, and information gained from that was used to revise and expand on the demonstration held Wednesday morning.
The city and its partners will use the information learned from this week's demonstration to analyze and report on the lessons they learned later this year. There is no immediate plan to fully launch the project in the future.
'One of our goals at the city is that, by testing these types of things and doing these demonstrations, we give people the opportunity to learn about how the technology works, hopefully feel more comfortable with it, and then, as it grows and expands, there's more opportunities for everyone,' said Ann Foss, transportation planning and programming manager for the city of Arlington.
Other partners, including the North Central Texas Council of Governments, helped with community engagement and outreach and more technical aspects, such as energy and cost analysis. UT Arlington has helped with community engagement and outreach, and faculty and students from the engineering department have helped with the technical aspects of the project.
Airspace Link is a software and management company that helped create a system for communication and tracking. Other partnerships include the drone delivery company Aerialoop, which provides the aircraft, and Mozee, a Dallas-based autonomous vehicle manufacturer, which provides the ground robot.
Shawn Taikratoke, CEO of Mozee, said mobility equals freedom, and the company wanted to help people dealing with food insecurity because of transportation issues.
'Roughly half of America has no access to mass transit, as of right now, and so being able to bridge that gap is a big deal for us,' Taikratoke said.

Keep checking those gold prices—scientists have more news about the coveted metal. An energy startup claims it has the recipe for modern-day alchemy: turning mercury into gold inside a nuclear fusion reactor. Last week, Marathon Fusion, a San Francisco-based energy startup, submitted a preprint detailing an action plan for synthesizing gold particles via nuclear transmutation—essentially the process of turning one element into another by tweaking its nucleus. The paper, which has yet to undergo peer review, argues that the proposed system would offer a new revenue stream from all the new gold being produced, in addition to other economic and technological benefits. Specifically, the proposed method involves introducing mercury-198 into a fusion reactor and bombarding it with neutrons until it transforms into mercury-197, a much more unstable isotope of mercury. Because of its instability, mercury-197 decays into gold-197, the only stable isotope of gold. This process takes about 64 hours and relies on the steady release of high-energy neutrons popping out of the fusion of the hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium. A special 'blanket configuration' in the tokamak—a donut-shaped machine that uses magnetic fields to confine plasma—would separate gold production from the fusion plant's energy generation, according to the study authors. As a result, gold production wouldn't impinge on the plant's primary function to generate nuclear energy. This setup would allow the plant to 'simultaneously meet the fuel cycle requirements of [deuterium and tritium] fusion and achieve economically valuable production of gold,' the authors wrote in the paper. Assuming this is all feasible—and this remains a big theoretical assumption—reactors using this approach could produce around 11,000 pounds (5,000 kilograms) of gold every year per gigawatt of electricity generated, according to Marathon Fusion's chief executive, Kyle Schiller, and chief technology officer, Adam Rutkowski. To put this into perspective, around 3,000 metric tons of gold are mined each year. In an interview with the Financial Times, the two representatives stated that this 'byproduct' could double the revenue of the plant. But it's worth noting that the same process would likely result in the production of unstable and potentially radioactive isotopes of gold. As such, Rutkowski admitted, the gold would have to be stored for 14 to 18 years before it could be labeled radiation-safe. Experts who have (unofficially) reviewed the study claim the proposal presents thought-provoking points that warrant further discussion. 'On paper it looks great, and everyone so far that I talk to remains intrigued and excited,' Ahmed Diallo, a plasma physicist at the U.S. Department of Energy's national laboratory at Princeton who wasn't involved in the study, told the Financial Times. But all that shines is not gold—especially given the fact that, again, the paper has yet to be peer reviewed and does not offer any empirical demonstrations of the proposed setup. If this company is successful, however, perhaps we'll finally have achieved modern alchemy without giant particle accelerators. Although, in my opinion, effectively achieving alchemy through the use of giant accelerators is still pretty cool.

Since the beginning of the calendar year, the state has collected $169 million in severance. The report comes just ahead of sweeping changes to the state's severance tax structure, that took effect on July 1, aimed at stimulating oil production and revisiting how revenues are shared with local governments. According to the data, the state brought in $41.16 million from oil production and $36.88 million from natural gas during the final quarter of fiscal year 2025. DeSoto Parish led all parishes in total severance collections with over $12.4 million, followed by Caddo ($11.7 million), Plaquemines ($9.6 million), and Lafourche ($5.38 million), reflecting strong production in the Haynesville Shale and Gulf regions. Under House Bill 600, passed during the 2025 legislative session and authored by Rep. Brett Geymann, R-Lake Charles, the severance tax on oil dropped from 12.5% to 6.5% for wells completed on or after July 1. Geymann pitched the changes as a way to revitalize Louisiana's energy economy, arguing that the state's high severance tax has driven investment to other states. 'The motivation is to get the oil and gas industry booming again,' Geymann told lawmakers. 'We're uncompetitive as it stands.' While oil producers will see lower tax burdens, a separate provision in HB600 also scales back a popular exemption for natural gas from newly completed horizontal wells. Beginning July 1, the tax exemption period shrinks from 24 months to 18 months — though existing wells are unaffected. Geymann said the modification is meant to make the overall package fiscally neutral and emphasized that most gas wells already pay out within that timeframe.

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Trump administration on Wednesday canceled a $4.9 billion federal loan guarantee for a new high-voltage transmission line for delivering solar and wind-generated electricity from the Midwest to the eastern U.S. The U.S. Department of Energy declared that it is "not critical for the federal government to have a role' in the first phase of Chicago-based Invenergy's planned Grain Belt Express. The department also questioned whether the $11 billion project could meet the financial conditions required for a loan guarantee. President Donald Trump has repeatedly derided wind and solar energy as 'unreliable' and opposed efforts to combat climate change by moving away from fossil fuels. The Department of Energy also said Wednesday that the conditional commitment to Invenergy in November was among billions of dollars' worth of commitments "rushed out the doors" by former President Joe Biden's administration after Biden lost the election. 'To ensure more responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources, DOE has terminated its conditional commitment,' the agency said in a statement. It wasn't immediately clear how much the department's action would delay or stop the start of construction, which was set to begin next year. The company's representatives didn't immediately respond to emails Wednesday seeking comment The company has said its project would create 4,000 jobs and new efficiencies in delivering power, and that it would save consumers $52 billion over 15 years. The line would deliver electricity from Kansas across Missouri and Illinois and into Indiana, connecting there to the power grid for the eastern U.S. It could deliver up to 5,000 megawatts of electricity. "When electricity demand and consumer power bills are soaring, it's hard to imagine a more backward move,' said Bob Keefe, executive director of E2, a nonpartisan, Washington-based group supporting renewable energy. Keefe called the Grain Belt Express 'one of the country's most important energy projects' and suggested Trump canceled the loan guarantee 'just because it will bring cleaner energy to more people.' But two prominent Missouri Republicans, U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley and state Attorney General Andrew Bailey, are vocal critics of the project, describing it as a threat to farmland and land owners' property rights. Bailey called the project a 'scam' and a 'boondoggle.' Hawley said on July 10 that he had secured a pledge from U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright to cancel the loan guarantee in a conversation with him and Trump. Critics like Hawley object to the company's ability to use lawsuits against individual land owners along the line's route to compel them to sell their property, which Hawley called 'an elitist land grab.' Online court records show that the company filed dozens of such lawsuits in Missouri circuit courts in recent years, and the Missouri Farm Bureau's president posted on the social platform X Wednesday that the project threatened to 'sacrifice rural America in the name of progress.' Democrats on the U.S. Senate's energy committee suggested on X that Trump, Wright and Hawley 'just killed" the project, but Invenergy announced in May that it had awarded $1.7 billion in contracts for work on the project. And Bailey suggested in a statement that the project could still go forward with private funding without the loan guarantee, saying, 'If Invenergy still intends to force this project on unwilling landowners, we will continue to fight every step of the way.'
