Pak airspace ban costs Air India Rs8.2b

As the airspace ban Pakistan slapped on Indian carriers drags on for forty days, the cost for Air India is turning from heavy to near-unsustainable, aviation sources said on Wednesday.
The Indian national carrier has already taken a hit of over Rs8.2 billion since the closure began.
According to well-placed aviation insiders, Air India is bleeding approximately Rs200 million each day due to longer alternate routes, increased fuel consumption and delays triggered by the airspace detour.
In a sign of rising frustration, Air India's Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson has formally written to the Indian government, highlighting the scale of financial damage.
In the letter, Wilson reportedly warned that continued restrictions could render airline operations unsustainable if not addressed soon.
According to The Economic Times, an internal presentation showed that Air India had, late last year, set a target to become profitable by FY 27. However, the closure of Pakistani airspace for Indian carriers is likely to delay that.
"It will still take a little bit more time to achieve what we want to achieve, but it was a five-year project in the beginning," Wilson said in the interview to the Economic Times, referring to the five-year transformation plan 'Vihaan' announced in September 2022.
"The closure of Pakistani airspace, which started on April 24, has forced Air India's flights to North America to take detours and stop in Vienna or Copenhagen to refuel, leading to increased expenses," the report noted.
"It's not insignificant, but as long as it covers the cost of operation, we will continue to operate," Wilson said. "We don't know the extent to which the bottom line is going to be affected. We will try to minimise the effect."
The CEO's concerns are not limited to Air India alone. Other Indian carriers have also reportedly suffered billions of rupees in cumulative losses, though precise estimates remain undisclosed.
"This isn't just turbulence, it's a full-blown storm for Indian aviation," a senior aviation official remarked, noting that the 40-day closure has upended flight logistics, increased operational costs, and complicated international schedules for Indian carriers.
The airspace restrictions, which came into effect in the wake of heightened diplomatic tensions, have now completed 40 days, with no breakthrough in sight. For airlines forced to circumvent Pakistani airspace, the sky is not only the limit but also a costly detour.
As the ban continues, industry experts warn that Indian carriers might soon be compelled to cut routes or hike fares, passing the burden onto passengers, unless diplomatic channels find a way to clear the air.

In a statement after a phone call with his US counterpart Marco Rubio, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani expressed Damascus's "aspiration to cooperate with the United States to return to the 1974 disengagement agreement". Washington has been driving diplomatic efforts towards a normalisation deal between Syria and Israel, with envoy Thomas Barrack saying last week that peace between the two was now needed. Speaking to The New York Times, Barrack confirmed this week that Syria and Israel were engaging in "meaningful" US-brokered talks to end their conflict. Following the toppling of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, Israel carried out hundreds of strikes on Syria and deployed its troops into the Golan Heights buffer zone, which the UN considered a violation of the agreement. Israel has also launched hundreds of air strikes on military targets in Syria and carried out incursions deeper into the country's south. Syria's new authorities refrained from responding to the attacks and admitted to holding indirect talks with Israel to reduce tensions. The two countries have no official diplomatic relations, with Syria not recognising Israel and the two nations technically at war since 1948. Israel conquered around two-thirds of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, before annexing it in 1981 in a move not recognised by any country other than the United States. A year after the 1973 war, the two reached an agreement on a disengagement line. As part of the deal, an 80-kilometre-long (50-mile) United Nations-patrolled buffer zone was created to the east of Israeli-occupied territory, separating it from the Syrian-controlled side. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on Monday that his country had an "interest" in normalising ties with Syria and neighbouring Lebanon. He added, however, that the Golan Heights "will remain part of the State of Israel" under any future peace agreement. Syrian state media reported on Wednesday that "statements concerning signing a peace agreement with the Israeli occupation at this time are considered premature". During the call with Rubio, Shaibani received a formal invitation "to visit Washington as soon as possible", according to the foreign ministry's statement. The two men also discussed Syrian Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa's participation in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, which the UN did not confirm. Shaibani previously visited the UN headquarters in New York in April, where he raised Syria's new flag. He and Rubio talked about "the Iranian threat in Syria", with Damascus expressing "its growing concern over Iran's attempts to interfere in Syrian affairs, especially following the strikes that recently targeted Tehran", referring to last month's Iran-Israel war. Tehran used to enjoy significant political and military influence in Syria and provided key support for Assad during the Syrian civil war that erupted in 2011.

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 26% tariff on all imported Indian goods, among the tariffs due to take effect next week on countries around the world who fail to reach agreements before a deadline he set in April. 'Free trade agreements are possible only when there is two-way benefit, it should be a win-win agreement,' Goyal told reporters. 'National interest will always be supreme. Keeping that in mind, if a good deal can be made, then India is always ready to make a deal with developed countries,' he said. 'India never does any trade deal on the basis of deadline or time frame…we will accept it only when it is completely finalised and in the national interest.' Indian officials returned from Washington this week after an extended visit to iron out lingering concerns on both sides. India market regulator to widen probe into Jane Street, source says

MUMBAI: India's markets regulator has widened its probe into alleged market manipulation by U.S. securities trading firm Jane Street to include other exchanges and indices, according to a source, after barring it from trading in the Indian markets earlier on Friday. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) barred Jane Street from buying and selling securities in the Indian market and also seized $567 of its funds.
