Sabah young engineers take part in NATSUM in Kuching
KUCHING (Aug 1): A delegation of 17 members from the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Young Engineers Section (YES) Sabah and four student representatives from the IEM UMS Student Section are representing Sabah at the National Summit for Young Engineers Malaysia (NATSUM) 2025, currently being held in Kuching, Sarawak.
Led by IEM YES Sabah chairman Lee TY, the team started their participation with a full day of technical and team-building activities aimed at strengthening engineering knowledge, leadership and collaboration among Malaysia's future engineers.
Day one of NATSUM 2025 began with two highly engaging technical visits. The first was to the Sejingkat Bridge, an essential infrastructure project that showcases modern bridge design and construction techniques. Participants received an in-depth briefing on the bridge's structural systems and its significance to regional connectivity.
The second visit was to the Sejingkat Power Plant, one of Sarawak's major electricity generation facilities. The young engineers were exposed to the inner workings of power generation, plant operations, and environmental compliance, offering them valuable real-world insights into the energy sector.
'These visits are crucial in bridging the gap between academic knowledge and field application,' said Lee. 'It's an eye-opening experience for many of our members.'
The day concluded with a team-building session held at the Theatre Hotel, where all participants are staying. Designed to promote leadership, trust and collaboration, the session encouraged interaction among delegates from various states and backgrounds.
Participants engaged in a series of challenges and activities aimed at sharpening soft skills such as communication, critical thinking and teamwork — all essential traits for future engineering leaders.
The active involvement of IEM YES Sabah and IEM UMS Student Section in this national-level summit highlights the rising engagement of young engineers from Sabah in Malaysia's engineering development agenda.
'We are proud to represent Sabah and to contribute to the growth of engineering talent in the country,' Lee added. 'Our presence here shows that Sabah's young engineers are ready to step up, learn and lead.'
NATSUM 2025 will continue over the coming days with more technical workshops, networking events, and leadership development sessions, providing a valuable platform for young engineers to connect, learn, and innovate together.

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 3): The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Young Engineers Section (YES) National Summit 2025 concluded on a high note with a vibrant and inspiring closing dinner hosted by IEM YES Sarawak at Theatre Hotel, Kuching on Saturday. The event brought together approximately 300 participants from all IEM YES branches across Malaysia, underscoring the unity, passion and dynamism of the country's young engineering community. The prestigious evening was graced by Datuk Ir. Aidel Lariwoo, Deputy Minister of Sarawak Infrastructure and Ports Development, who delivered the guest of honour's speech, praising the vital contributions of engineers in shaping Malaysia's infrastructure and advancing national progress. He also commended IEM YES for nurturing a strong pipeline of future-ready engineering leaders. As a show of support, Aidel generously donated RM10,000 to the IEM YES Sarawak Branch, further empowering youth engineering activities in the state. Also present were prominent engineering leaders including Prof. Ir. Dr. Jeffrey Chiang, President of IEM Malaysia; Ir. Dr. Angeline Liew, chairman of IEM Sarawak Branch; and Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. Dr. Cassidy anak Morris, director of JKR Sarawak, alongside corporate sponsors who have steadfastly supported youth-led engineering development. The organising chairman of the summit, Ir. Cliff Jude Zehnder, who also serves as the chairman of IEM YES Sarawak, delivered the opening speech during the dinner. His remarks reflected the spirit of collaboration, resilience, and the importance of youth-led engineering innovation in driving the nation forward. A highlight of the evening was the debut performance of a newly composed song, 'We Are Engineers', which celebrated the unity, pride and purpose shared by engineers across the country. Among the five selected vocalists was Mr Nell from the IEM UMS Student Section, representing Sabah with great enthusiasm and spirit. Representing IEM Sabah Branch at the event was Ir. Ts. Tan KJ, JP, Vice Chairman of IEM Sabah. Also present were Lee Tze Yei, chairman of IEM YES Sabah, and Ag. Khairul Kamaludin, Immediate Past Chairman of IEM YES Sabah, who both played key roles in leading and mentoring the delegation from Sabah. The Sabah team comprised 17 enthusiastic delegates from IEM YES Sabah, accompanied by four student representatives from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). In a proud and joyous moment, IEM YES Sabah was honoured with the 'Outstanding IEM YES Branch 2025' award — achieving this prestigious recognition for the third consecutive year since 2023. This accomplishment highlights their exceptional leadership, consistent innovation, and deep commitment to the engineering community. The evening concluded with a symbolic handover ceremony to announce that IEM Southern Region (Johor) will host the IEM YES National Summit 2026, continuing the tradition of inter-branch unity and knowledge-sharing. IEM Sabah supports RMK13 by advancing youth development in Sabah
Tan With the launch of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) in Parliament, the government has outlined a bold vision to reshape the nation's development framework, emphasizing fairness, resilience and technology-driven progress. Behind every highway, water plant, or green energy system lies a less visible but crucial foundation: engineering talent. As the leading professional engineering body in Sabah, the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM Sabah) is taking proactive steps to support RMK13 by strengthening the development of local engineering human capital. IEM Sabah has proposed three strategic initiatives to help the government advance talent development across the state. 1. Upskilling TVET Trainers for Industry 4.0 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is the bedrock for building a skilled workforce. However, to produce future-ready graduates, TVET trainers themselves must be technologically advanced. IEM Sabah is going to collaborate with MARA, the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), and the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) to establish an upskilling program for Sabah's TVET trainers. Courses will focus on Automation and control systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT), Smart building technologies (e.g., BIM), Renewable energy and sustainable engineering IEM also proposes the creation of an industry-academia interface platform to ensure that TVET syllabi remain aligned with real-world engineering needs. 2. Structured Internships and Mentorships to Prepare Young Engineers A common issue faced by graduates is the 'qualification but no experience' gap. IEM Sabah is going to launch a Structured Internship and Mentorship Program, in collaboration with key agencies such as the Public Works Department (JKR), Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), and local councils, GLS and private sectors. Under this program: • Over 300 engineering students annually will be placed in real infrastructure projects. • Each student will be matched with an experienced mentor engineer for career and technical guidance. • Additional 'Engineering Graduate Bootcamps' will help fresh graduates transition into the workforce. 3. Strengthening Soft Skills and Professional Ethics Engineering is not just about calculations and drawings. Successful engineers must also have the following skills and professional ethics such as ethical and responsible, effective communicators, good team players and project-minded and technically literate competency. To address this, IEM Sabah will offer training on the following subjects: Engineering ethics and duty of care, Technical reporting and contract basics, Public communication for infrastructure projects, Professional English and Bahasa Malaysia communication. These skills are essential for building trust and accountability in the public infrastructure delivery system. In Conclusion: Engineering Human Capital Is Sabah's Growth Engine Whether we speak of better roads, clean water, green energy, or digital infrastructure, none can materialize without capable, local engineers. 13MP key milestone for Malaysia's medium-term development says Lee
KUALA LUMPUR: The tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in Parliament marks a pivotal moment in shaping the nation's medium-term development, according to Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. As Malaysia faces global economic uncertainty, technological shifts, climate challenges, and demographic changes, he described the plan as an opportunity to realign priorities, strengthen resilience, and drive sustainable progress. 'In general, the plan must be commended for its intent to address critical national challenges such as income inequality, digital transformation, green economy transition and institutional reform,' he said. Lee stressed that the plan's effectiveness relies on disciplined execution, transparency, and collaboration across government and society. He called for a robust monitoring system to track progress, alongside regular public reporting and audits to ensure accountability. Strong coordination between federal, state, and local agencies is essential to prevent inefficiencies, he added. Engagement with civil society and the private sector must continue beyond planning to maintain inclusivity. 'Development expenditure must be prioritised based on impact, equity, and sustainability, with a focus on reducing leakages and wastage,' Lee said.
