KULIM : Austrian tech giant AT&S is ramping up efforts to develop a skilled Malaysian workforce in line with a commitment to have locals make up almost 100% of the entire staff strength at its plant here.
AT&S's executive vice-president for microelectronics business, Ingolf Schroeder, said the company is collaborating with vocational training centres and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions to achieve the target.
Malaysia has become a critical manufacturing base for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a company focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing.
'Our facility here (in Kulim) is producing AMD's next-generation products, including advanced integrated circuit (IC) substrates used in AI,' Schroeder told reporters at AT&S's Malaysian plant in the Kulim Hi-Tech Park yesterday.
AT&S is already actively engaged with vocational and TVET institutions to provide professional training and foundational skills as well as to ensure smooth onboarding.
AT&S Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik (M) Sdn Bhd senior vice-president and managing director Yap Suan See said the company sends experts to local institutions in partnership with the education sector.
She said the company also has programmes to meet each student's preferences. '(For instance) some students prefer hands-on production floor experience, so we provide that,' she said.
Yap noted that universities do not offer specialised courses related to IC substrates, a critical component used in semiconductors, smartphones, industrial electronics, automotive systems, medical devices, and AI hardware.
'We are working with institutions to develop the relevant modules and training programmes to better prepare students,' she said.
She added that fresh graduates hired to work at the plant are given 'a lot of training'.
Schroeder said AT&S has training programmes to meet industry needs.
'We have laid the foundation with local universities, and we need their willingness to adjust training content and make onboarding easier,' he said.
'We've had good cooperation from local authorities,' he added.
AT&S currently has 1,500 employees at its 255,000-square-metre site in Kulim. In 2021, it picked Malaysia for its first facility in Southeast Asia.
Construction work on the plant began in November 2021, while commercial operations began early this year.
The firm has invested over RM5 billion in its Malaysian facility, part of a broader RM8.5 billion Phase 1 development plan involving two production sites, including RM600 million for research and development.
AT&S's manufacturing facility in Kulim started the high-volume manufacturing of high-end IC substrates in March.

‘Subsidised cooking oil sold for prayer use'

Murugiah is urging the authorities to compel prayer oil traders to declare the source of their products and list the retail price in their packaging. — LIM BENG TATT/The Star Penang Hindu Association claims unscrupulous suppliers making profits of over 200% by repackaging product Penang Hindu Association (PHA) is claiming that some bottles containing prayer oil, sold at nearly RM9 per litre, are actually just ordinary, subsidised Malaysian cooking oil, which can be purchased for RM2.50 per litre. Its president Datuk P. Murugiah urged the authorities to clamp down against the practice. He claimed that unscrupulous suppliers were making a profit margin of over 228%, adding that subsidised cooking oil was meant for low-income households. 'We found that most of the 'prayer oil' sold in the state, especially in temple supply stores, is actually repackaged subsidised cooking oil, originally priced at RM2.50 per litre. 'One particular brand is now being sold at RM8.20 per litre in the open market as oil for ritual use. Some brands cost even more. 'The practice, if left unchecked, will defeat the purpose of the subsidy meant for the B40 group,' he added. Introduced to help keep daily essentials affordable, Malaysia's subsidised cooking oil comes in locally packed polybags. Murugiah said any loophole in the system would put pressure on domestic oil supplies and affect both consumers and honest retailers alike. 'The issue is not new. In 2023, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry caught a trader repackaging subsidised cooking oil into different bottles and selling it as prayer oil at high prices. 'Some suppliers even resorted to using colour dyes in the oil to deceive the authorities. 'We hope the ministry will look into this and carry out frequent spot checks at retail outlets, especially those selling religious paraphernalia,' he said. Murugiah said the association also wanted clearer labelling regulations. 'We urge the ministry to compel prayer oil traders to declare the source of their products and clearly list the retail price on the packaging. 'This is in line with labelling laws and to ensure consumers are not misled,' he said. He added that the association also supported a nationwide rollout of the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme (eCOSS), designed to track the supply of subsidised oil from refinery to retail. He said eCOSS could plug the loopholes currently exploited by rogue suppliers. He urged consumers to stay alert and check the source of the oil purchased for prayer use. 'It is important not to be misled by unscrupulous parties,' he added. Penang Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) director S. Jegan said action would be taken against anyone involved in the misuse of subsidised goods. He said the ministry was consistently monitoring the use of cooking oil, not only supply issues, but also its misuse, including for religious rituals as highlighted by PHA. 'However, we have not received any official complaints on this matter. 'Enforcement officers will continue to act under all relevant laws, including those governing subsidised goods,' Jegan said.

Garcia's big dream for JDT is to roar on the global stage

PETALING JAYA: Will Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) get to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup? At least, that is the big vision that has been laid out for the Southern Tigers by their chief executive officer Luis Garcia, who is currently working as a pundit in the United States at the tournament. He is hopeful of the qualification for the Club World Cup to be expanded in four years' time. Speaking on the club's ambitions, Garcia stated the directive from Regent of Johor and owner of JDT Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, who has called for the club to 'maximise their full potential' and fly the flags of Johor and Malaysia even higher on the global stage. 'Asia's top level demands nothing short of excellence,' Garcia said. 'We cannot afford to take our foot off the gas if JDT are to succeed on this enormous mission. But we're fully committed not just for ourselves, but for Malaysian football as a whole.' Since 2019, JDT have been Malaysia's sole representative in the AFC Champions League (ACL) Elite. This has directly helped raise Malaysia's profile in Asian club football, paving the way for greater participation of other domestic clubs in continental competitions. But Garcia believes the time has come to take things further. 'With the potential expansion of the FIFA Club World Cup to include more Asian teams, JDT must aim to regularly reach the latter stages of the ACL Elite. That's the level required, and we want to be ready, not just to qualify, but to compete.'

U.S. stocks close mixed after job reports

NEW YORK, July 2 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended mixed on Wednesday as optimism over new trade deals helped offset concerns about a slowing labor market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged down 10.52 points, or 0.02 percent, to 44,484.42. The S&P 500 rose 29.41 points, or 0.47 percent, to 6,227.42, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 190.24 points, or 0.94 percent, to 20,393.13. Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in green, with energy and materials leading the gainers by adding 1.70 percent and 1.33 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, health and utilities led the laggards by losing 0.97 percent and 0.87 percent, respectively. Gains were driven in part by upbeat sentiment around trade after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new deal with Vietnam that includes a 20 percent tariff on Vietnamese imports. Shares of Nike, which sources a significant portion of its footwear from Vietnam and China, jumped more than 4 percent following the news. Earlier in the day, stocks came under pressure after a disappointing report from ADP showed the private sector shed 33,000 jobs in the prior month, which was the first decline in more than a year and well below economist forecasts of a 100,000-job increase. While the ADP report does not always align with the government's official nonfarm payrolls data, due on Thursday, it raised concerns about broader labor market weakness. Economists expect 110,000 jobs to have been added in June. Some strategists said the report could push the Federal Reserve closer to a rate cut, especially if government data also shows softness. Market expectations for a July rate cut rose slightly to 23 percent, up from 21 percent a day earlier, according to CME FedWatch. "If we end up having a fairly weak employment report, then that could allow the Fed to be cutting rates," said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research. "We think labor demand is slowing, but so far the slowdown is modest," Morgan Stanley chief U.S. economist Michael Gapen wrote in a note to clients. Among major tech movers, Tesla surged nearly 5 percent despite reporting a year-over-year drop in global second-quarter deliveries, as the decline was smaller than feared. Apple gained 2.22 percent, extending its winning streak to four sessions. Nvidia and Broadcom rose 2.58 percent and 1.95 percent, respectively, and Alphabet added 1.61 percent. Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta Platforms slipped modestly.
