Verstappen overtakes Piastri to win sprint race at Belgian GP at start of new Red Bull era in F1
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium (AP) — Max Verstappen overtook Oscar Piastri and drove '15 qualifying laps' to win the Formula 1 sprint race at the Belgian Grand Prix on Saturday as Red Bull begins a new era without fired team principal Christian Horner. Article content Verstappen surged past Piastri on the straight on the first lap. The Australian was close behind Verstappen for the rest of the 15-lap sprint race but couldn't find a way past the four-time champion. Article content Article content Article content Lando Norris, in the other McLaren, was third after retaking the place from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and catching up to Piastri. Article content Verstappen races 'over the limit' Article content 'You're keeping faster cars behind, so you have to drive over the limit of what you think is possible,' Verstappen said. Article content 'Tire management is out of the window, so that's what's making it really difficult. I'm just doing 15 qualifying laps to try and keep them behind on a track where tire management is important.' Article content It was Verstappen's first race win of any sort since the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in May, and his first in a sprint since the United States Grand Prix last October. Article content Piastri extends his lead over Norris in the standings to nine points from eight. Verstappen is third, 68 points off the lead. Article content Leclerc held on to fourth and it was an impressive result for Haas, with Esteban Ocon fifth and Oliver Bearman seventh. Carlos Sainz, Jr. was sixth for Williams and Isack Hadjar took the final point for Racing Bulls in eighth. Article content Article content McLaren's dilemma Article content Qualifying takes place later Saturday for Sunday's Grand Prix race, and McLaren has a decision to make after losing out to Verstappen and Red Bull in the sprint. Article content Verstappen couldn't match the McLarens for overall pace but he was fastest where it mattered. He opted for a lower-downforce rear wing to maximize top speed at the cost of grip. Article content That helped Verstappen with his first-lap pass for the lead and then helped ensure Piastri was too far back on the straights to line up an overtake of his own into the following corners. Article content 'I didn't have enough straight-line speed,' Piastri admitted, but said the risk of rain on Sunday would make it a gamble to follow Verstappen's example. Article content 'The weather is looking pretty bad for tomorrow, which obviously means you probably don't want to take off too much wing, but I don't really want to repeat the sprint we've just had,' he said. 'We'll have a look, see what we can do.' Article content

Owusu, Sealy and Escobar score goals as Montreal beats Revolution, snaps 4-game winless skid
CF Montréal forward Dante Sealy, left, and New England Revolution defender Peyton Miller, right, vie for control of the ball during the first half of an MLS soccer match, Friday, July 25, 2025, in Foxborough, Mass. (AP Photo/Steven Senne) Prince Owusu, Dante Sealy and Olger Escobar each scored a goal on Friday night to help CF Montreal beat the New England Revolution 3-1 to snap a four-game winless streak. Montreal (4-15-6) went into the game with 15 points this season, fewest in MLS. Caden Clark tapped a one-touch pass from just outside the area toward the penalty spot and Sealy slammed home a first-timer to give Montreal a 2-1 lead in the 36th. Clark, a 22-year-old midfielder in his fifth MLS season, has a career-high tying four assists this season. After Jonathan Sirois punched away an arcing cross near the right post and fell to the ground, Luca Langoni skipped a shot from the right-center of the area that was blocked at the goal line by Joel Waterman in the 85th. New England (6-11-7) is winless, with five losses, in its last six. Sirois had one save, a diving one-hand stop of a shot by Chancalay, that was deflected by Bugaj, in the 53rd. Tomás Chancalay gave the Revolution a 1-0 lead with a a first-touch finish from the center of the area in the third minute. Chancalay has scored in back-to-back games for the second time in his three-year MLS career. Owusu, on the counter-attack, stopped a low entry pass played by Dawid Bugaj with his right foot as he held off a defender with his hip. Owusu then turned and scored on a rising second-touch shot with his left foot as he fell to the ground to make it 1-1 in the ninth minute. Owusu has scored seven of his 11 goals this season in the past eight games. Olger, who made his fourth career appearance, capped the scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time with his first goal in MLS. The Revolution's Brayan Ceballos (yellow card accumulation) served a one-game suspension. This report by The Associated Press was first published on July 25, 2025.
