Dubai's RTA completes 40% of nol digital payment system upgrade

Zawya17-03-2025
DUBAI - The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has completed 40 percent of the nol system upgrade, transitioning from the existing card-based ticketing system to the more advanced account-based ticketing (ABT) technology.
The project is set for completion by the end of Q3 2026.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, stated, 'Given the scale of the project, which has a total cost of AED550 million, it has been divided into three key phases.
In the first phase, the central system will be upgraded to create digital accounts for users, linking them to their existing nol cards. The second phase will introduce a new generation of nol cards, incorporating advanced technologies aligned with international standards to ensure compatibility with banking card technologies.
In the third and final phase, the system upgrade will be completed, enabling the acceptance of alternative payment methods, including bank cards and digital wallets, for public transport fare payments across Dubai.'
Al Tayer stated, 'Upgrading the nol system will introduce several advanced features and benefits for users. The new system will enable account creation, allowing users to link their nol cards to digital accounts, add nol cards to smartphone wallets, and purchase tickets using QR code technology via digital channels. It will also implement the flexible fare concept across public transport.'
He added, 'With the upgraded system, users can create and manage their accounts, link their own and family members' nol cards, and control account settings, including allocating top-up amounts for each card. They will also have the option to activate automatic balance top-ups by linking their accounts to banking services, view daily transaction statements, and seamlessly suspend cards and retrieve balances.
Upgrading systems, devices, and smart kiosks at public transport stations will enhance new payment technologies, enabling users to pay fares using a variety of methods, including QR code ticketing, the next generation of nol cards, facial recognition, fingerprint authentication, bank cards, and digital wallets.
The upgraded system will also extend nol card usage beyond public transport, allowing users to make purchases across digital platforms and retail outlets in the UAE, similar to bank cards.'

Smart monitoring system boosts driving school training standards in Dubai

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has reported impressive results from its Smart Monitoring System, which uses AI-powered cameras in driving school vehicles to monitor instructors and trainees. Over the past seven months, the system tracked more than 1.7 million training sessions involving 245,764 trainees - a 14-fold increase compared to the same period last year. The system, developed by the RTA's Licensing Agency, cuts inspection time from 20 minutes to just one, while increasing violation detection fivefold. It automatically spots safety breaches like mobile phone use by instructors or trainees, seatbelt neglect and other distractions including eating, drinking or sleeping while driving. Additional features like predictive analytics and integration with licensing systems are set to launch later this year, further strengthening regulatory compliance and performance across driving institutes. #RTA 's Smart Monitoring System, developed by the Licensing Activities Monitoring Department at our Licensing Agency, to track the behaviour of instructors and trainees using AI-powered cameras in driving school vehicles, has delivered remarkable results, monitoring 1,734,790… — RTA (@rta_dubai) August 5, 2025

RTA's smart monitoring system delivers excellent results in tracking driving school user behaviour

The Smart Monitoring System launched by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to track the behaviour of instructors and trainees using AI-powered cameras in driving school vehicles has delivered remarkable results. Developed by the Licensing Activities Monitoring Department at RTA's Licensing Agency, the system has monitored 1,734,790 training sessions for 245,764 trainees over the past seven months, a 14-fold increase compared to the same period last year. These outcomes reflect RTA's continued drive to realise its vision of becoming the World Leader in Seamless and Sustainable Mobility and underscore its sustained commitment to digital transformation and innovation in monitoring practices. The new system, which is run by RTA's Licensing Intelligent Operations Centre and through the inspectors' smart tablet, has also reduced inspection time from 20 minutes to just one minute, while enabling a fivefold increase in recorded violations. This positions it as a comprehensive monitoring tool that enhances training service quality and upholds the highest safety standards. The system uses technologies that enable real-time, round-the-clock monitoring of instructors and trainees through the installation of smart cameras in driving school vehicles. These cameras are equipped with artificial intelligence (machine learning) and computer vision, which enhance the effectiveness of supervision during training sessions. The system automatically detects violations such as mobile phone use by instructors or trainees, failure to fasten seat belts, leaving designated training zones, failure to wear the prescribed uniform or maintain professional appearance, and distractions including eating, drinking, sleeping while driving, or other distractions. The Smart Monitoring System for observing the behaviour of driving school vehicle users marks a fundamental shift in field monitoring concepts. It aligns with the vision and strategic direction of Dubai's government in digital transformation and innovation, while fostering a safe and professional training environment that prepares drivers to the highest standards. Additional innovative features are being introduced to the system this year, including predictive analytics and the integration of actual instructor performance data with licensing and permit systems. These enhancements aim to establish a more robust and integrated monitoring framework. Companies play a vital role in complying with all regulations and requirements to ensure a safe and efficient working environment. RTA collaborates closely with strategic partners to deliver safe and reliable training services, recognising that adherence to safety and security standards is a core responsibility. The new system presents a real opportunity to reinforce awareness of regulatory compliance, supporting improved performance and greater alignment with required standards across all training institutes.
