Inside Jets training camp: A 'new era' in New York as Aaron Glenn looks to build a 'physical, violent outfit'

Daily Maila day ago
Quincy Williams stepped off the practice field and on to the podium where, with an Alabama lilt, he detailed his 'mission' in 'this new era of the New York Jets.'
'I want everything,' Williams said on Thursday morning. 'I want to lead my team to a place that we haven't been in a while.'
A few feet below the microphone, his feet carried a message, too. The linebacker, 28, wore bright green cleats but near the laces was an image of bright red lips and pearly whites.
A smile? On the evidence of these early days of training camp, more an illustration of bared teeth.
It has been a punishing start to life under new head coach Aaron Glenn. The Jets are a week into training camp but already the message is being hammered home.
'We want to be a fast, physical and violent outfit,' offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand said on Thursday.
That much became clear earlier this week, when the Jets took the rare step of re-introducing live tackling into practice.
It was evident again on Thursday, when defensive end Eric Watts crushed Breece Hall and a couple of fans nearly came to blows in the bleachers. We're only in July but one father didn't take kindly to his view being obstructed by an autograph hunter.
'Oh, I love this right here,' said Williams, who has not done live tackling in practice since college. 'At OTAs Coach Glenn already said we're going to be physical during training camp. I said: 'You talking my language!'
The hope for Williams? It all pays off come September and he can achieve his mission of ending the joint-longest playoff drought in America's major leagues (14 seasons).
But all the brutality could make some coaches wince. Not here.
'I love it,' defensive coordinator Steve Wilks said. 'It's a fine line. Everybody's worried about getting hurt and this is football. But… AG is doing a hell of a job, trying to prepare us for exactly what we're going to see.'
Engstrand echoed those sentiments. No matter that more physicality means more time in the firing line for Garrett Wilson – just a couple of weeks after the star receiver signed a four-year, $130 million contract extension.
'Garrett absolutely needs to get tackled!' the offensive coordinator said. 'I firmly believe, with all my heart, that what we're doing is the right thing to do.

'The best way to get good at something is to do it. So it would be negligent upon the coaching staff to not do that.'
On Thursday, Glenn prowled around the practice field dressed all in black. He carried a whistle in his mouth and wore a shirt that read: 'Grind'
All week players have been lining up to draw a line in the sand between this regime and the last. Some have barely attempted to disguise their digs at former head coach Robert Saleh, who was sacked last October - midway through another miserable season.
It was obvious back in January, when Glenn was introduced at this facility, that he possesses all the self-assurance and strength of personality required to be a head coach.
Glenn wasted little time before putting his stamp on this team. He told Aaron Rodgers his services were longer required and began laying the foundations for a new era with Justin Fields under center. His impact on the practice field is evident already, too.
'I see it in our competing level,' special teams coordinator Chris Banjo said on Thursday. 'When you talk about what AG stresses and his personality, I think it becomes very, very infectious.
'That starts to spread and you start to see the juice from guys at practice, the competitive talking – I won't use the word I wanted to use – on the field, I think that all signifies what AG is bringing. The juice they've been able to play with has been really cool to watch.'
All that remains to be seen? Whether Glenn can build the playbook and the roster to drag New York back towards the big time. Whether the Jets can find that 'juice' once the season starts.
Williams wants the New York Jets defense to be 'consistently feared... every single week'
On Thursday, there were flashes of brilliance from Fields but also plenty of evidence that, offensively, the Jets still have a lot to work on.
Even if there is no doubting the talent of Wilson and running back Hall. It was a privilege to watch their respective duels with Sauce Gardner and Williams up close.
'I love it - every single day when the coaches be like, 'We got that money on the line,' I need all of it,' Williams said. 'Anytime we go pass rush like today or do a tackle drill, I got to have the best running back in the league up.'
This session belonged to the defense. No question. And no matter that Wilks' group remain a work in progress, too. 'We're definitely a long way away from where we need to be, but I see the progress each and every day,' he said. 'I like the direction in which we're going.'
The next stop on that journey? 'To be consistently feared,' Williams said. 'Every single week.'

Eddie Howe admits Alexander Isak situation is ‘far from ideal'

Eddie Howe admits the Alexander Isak situation is 'far from ideal' but still hopes to see the unsettled star back in a Newcastle shirt after confirming the club rejected an offer from Liverpool. The 25-year-old Swede, one of the hottest properties in world football, has had his head turned by the Premier League champions' interest this summer. Isak did not travel to Asia for Newcastle's pre-season tour due to what the club called a 'minor thigh injury', only for his unhappiness to emerge along with the fact he is training at former club Real Sociedad. 'I think from my situation, I am very much removed from everything that is happening back home,' Magpies boss Howe said, as reported by The Athletic. 'I was made aware there was a bid yesterday. That bid was turned down before I heard about it. 'There are people back in England dealing with the situation. I really don't know what is going to happen next, but from our perspective, we still support Alex in every way, and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.' Newcastle head back from Asia after Sunday's friendly against Tottenham in Seoul, where Howe revealed he learned Isak was training in Spain with his former club through the media. 'I know where he is through the media, so I think from that perspective it's difficult for me to go into any detail,' the said. 'The situation is far from ideal. It is quite complex. I think that is all I have got to say.'

Liverpool's Tyler Morton inching closer to joining Lyon in a deal worth up to £15m - with the Reds starlet in search of first-team football

Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton is close to securing a move to French side Lyon worth up to £15million. The England U21 international has been looking to move for more regular first team game time and has attracted enquiries from a number of clubs including West Ham, Sporting Braga, Ajax and Strasbourg. Liverpool have been holding out for £15m for the 22-year old homegrown academy graduate and Lyon have now provisionally agreed terms with a deal expected to go through. Morton spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Championship side Hull City. The 22-year-old returned to Merseyside last season but could only manage six appearances in all competitions as Arne Slot led the club to Premier League glory in his maiden campaign in charge. Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez remains an option for Saudi club Al Hilal. Liverpool have been holding out for £70m for the Uruguay international and have already rejected an approach from Al Nassr in February and again more recently from Napoli. Newcastle have Nunez on their long list of options but they have other targets higher up as priorities and Liverpool are yet to indicate if they will make a new bid for Alexander Isak. Meanwhile former Manchester United coach Simon Wiles has taken over as Liverpool U18 coach.

What are our pundits' Premiership predictions?

With the shadow boxing of pre-season well and truly over, who has emerged stronger or weaker? We have already had the League Cup group stage and the first European qualifiers, but now the Scottish football season truly gets into full swing with the first domestic league fixtures this some of BBC Scotland's football pundits were asked to give us their preditions for the top-flight was no surprise with their unanimous view on who would finish Premiership champions and runners-up - and one team stood out as likely relegation who did they think will finish third - and who do they reckon will be the surprise guys? Read on. Willie Miller, former Aberdeen centre-half 1st: CelticThe reigning champions still have the strongest squad, with a top-class, proven manager.2nd: RangersWith a new head coach, new owners and new investment, the Ibrox side quite simply have to be at runners-up at worst.3rd: AberdeenIf they can cope with European football, the Dons have a cup-winning squad, a proven, successful, experienced manager and a chairman who will back him Dundee With a whole host of players departing, a new coach in the form of Steven Presley who was not the most popular choice as far as their fans are concerned, and a poor start to the League Cup, the pressure could come on early at Dens package: Falkirk They have a coach in John McGlynn who likes to play the game in a cultured fashion, which he won't change, so they will be easy on the eye and successfull with it. Julie Fleeting, former Scotland striker 1st: CelticThe strength of their squad is superior to the rest and, financially, they can add quality when needed. They also have players who are Celtic through and through and play with passion and desire.2nd: RangersWith lots of changes behind the scenes at Ibrox, it may take a bit of time to bed in and get them back to really competing at Celtic's level.3rd: HibernianDavid Gray had a tough start as head coach, but then things started to click and, based on their strong second half of last season, they have a good foundation to build on. Their first five games of the season - Dundee, Kilmarnock, Livingston, Falkirk and St Mirren - are all games they can go into confident they can get early points on the DundeeThis is always a really tough to answer as teams work really hard to prepare their squads for the new season. I've based my answer on a couple of poor League Cup results and also, with a new head coach coming in, it may take time for them to hit the ground package: FalkirkAfter back-to-back promotions, it's exciting to see how the Bairns can compete at the highest level. Michael Stewart, former Hearts & Hibs midfielder 1st: CelticThey're the strongest team with the biggest budget and a top-level manager as well. They're still looking to bring in a main striker too, which I can only see strengthening their grip on the Premiership. As long as these facts remain, Celtic are going to continue to be the force to reckon with here.2nd: RangersThey're the next biggest club in the country and clearly, with all the new people moving into positions in their hierarchy, they'll be desperate to close the gap on Celtic, but I'm not sure that will be achievable just now. I think there's scope for those behind to potentially get closer to the Ibrox side.3rd: Heart of MidlothianFor the first time in years, Hearts have made a serious managerial appointment and, with some of the Jamestown signings looking like they may have an impact offensively, it could be a positive partnership for all concerned at Tynecastle. I see a really interesting battle for third between the two Edinburgh sides, as Hibs have transformed into a club who really have their house in ?Impossible to say until we get a chance to see all the sides in action. However, I think it could be a challenging season for Dundee, given the self-enforced changes and the loss of key players. Along with the likes of Kilmarnock, Livingston and Falkirk, I see them potentially fighting it package: MotherwellIf the Steelmen make a relatively bright start to the campaign then the style Jens Berthel Askou is implementing could be really enjoyable for the fans to watch - and ultimately rewarding too - with a chance to challenge for the top six. Rory Loy, former Falkirk striker 1st: CelticThe champions have work to do on the squad as it stands, but I think they will address this with some more eye-catching signings towards the end of the window and, with Brendan Rodgers being the best manager in the league, I don't see any other winner.2nd: RangersI think the Ibrox side may be closer to Celtic come May than last season, but I think it will take a few months to hit top form, which will leave them points behind. Always difficult to chase such a dominant Celtic.3rd: Heart of Midlothian Derek McInnes arriving as head coach and actually playing Lawrence Shankland in his favoured position up top equals best of the rest. Simple. Not playing in Europe will be a huge advantage versus the other teams expected to challenge for DundeeEasily the toughest one to predict. Poor League Cup group-stage campaigns don't always mean much, but Falkirk and Livingston look good, so I will say Dundee. Very much guess work at this stage with this one package: LivingstonDavid Martindale is determined to try and lose the long ball, physicality tag. Whilst they may not be top six, I think they will be comfortable this season, finishing best of the rest. Stephen Craigan, former Motherwell defender 1st: Celtic The reigning champions have the best players and the deepest squad, as well as Brendan Rodgers as manager.2nd: RangersStill a lot of questions around the new signings and their ability to win a title in a two-horse race. Time will tell if they're good enough.3rd: Heart of Midlothian Not having group stage European football as a distraction is a huge bonus for the Edinburgh side. The players underperformed last season and, with the additions over the summer, they have a better balance to the DundeeI'm judging this as we stand and not at the end of the transfer window remember. They have lost a lot of their reliable players who had good Scottish Premiership experience and haven't yet managed to replace them and I'm not sure they can. A bit into the package: LivingstonI'm not sure they'll be a surprise, but David Martindale has recruited well. He got his business done early and his squad has a lot of players with a point to prove and I think they'll prove it. A downside for them, though, is that teams won't dread going to Almondvale (or whatever it's called now) because of the new artificial pitch. I think they will stay well clear of trouble but won't have enough for top six.
