THE RONA FOUNDATION PRESENTS $1.3 MILLION TO 8 CANADIAN NPOs THROUGH ITS 2025 BUILD FROM THE HEART PROGRAM Français

BOUCHERVILLE, QC, July 8, 2025 /CNW/ - The RONA Foundation, which oversees the philanthropic activities of RONA inc., one of Canada's leading home improvement retailers operating and servicing some 425 corporate and affiliated dealer stores, will present a total of $1.3M to eight non-profit organizations (NPOs) across the country through its 2025 Build from the Heart program. This initiative, which was launched in 2022, is designed to provide financial support to NPOs with projects aimed at revitalizing a living environment or facilitating access to housing for victims of domestic violence and their children, low-income families, and people with disabilities or mental health issues.
The beneficiary organizations were selected earlier this year following a call for applications. A selection committee studied the projects and made their decision based on a rigorous evaluation grid.
"At the RONA Foundation, we care deeply about improving life in the communities where we take root. Given that access to housing is a major challenge that underscores the vulnerability of many Canadians, we are committed to supporting this cause," says Catherine Laporte, Chair of the RONA Foundation Board of Directors and Senior Vice-President, Marketing and Customer Experience at RONA.
The program raised funds through a mix of initiatives, including:
A fundraising campaign that took place in all RONA+ and RONA corporate stores and online at rona.ca, from April 21 to May 31, 2025.
The new "Win Your Renovations" contest, which gave customers who donated $15 or more a chance to win one of three RONA gift cards, including one for $25,000 and two for $1,000.
A partnership with several major appliance vendors (Amana, Bosch, Electrolux, Frigidaire, Frigidaire Gallery, GE - MABE, KitchenAid, LG, LG Studio, Maytag, Midea, Samsung, and Whirlpool), who donated $5 to the RONA Foundation for every major appliance sold in stores and online from April 17 to May 28.
The RONA Foundation's annual Golf Day, held at the Club de Golf La Vallée du Richelieu on July 7, 2025, which was attended by many RONA vendors.
"The Golf Day was an incredible demonstration of solidarity," says Foundation Director Josée Lafitte. "Thank you to our partners, customers and donors. Every action counts. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to each of them for their generosity and support. Together, we can make a difference."

Real news — meaning fact-based, fact-checked original news — costs real money. Traditionally, newspapers relied heavily on advertising revenue to fund the original content our journalists create. Over the past 15 years, those advertising dollars have shifted from authoritative Canadian sources, like newspapers, to U.S.-based web giants. In 2012, Canadian newspaper advertising revenue stood at $3.55 billion. Today, it is less than $1 billion. Yet, four out of five Canadians still read newspapers, regardless of format, at least once a week — essentially unchanged since 2012. A daily roundup of Opinion pieces from the Sun and beyond. To illustrate the point, the federal government reports that during fiscal year 2022 to 2023, it spent more than $86 million on advertising. Of that, less than $1 million went to all print publications in the country combined. In the face of threats to our economy and our sovereignty by U.S. President Donald Trump, Canadians are showing their pride and buying Canadian. You can see it in the grocery aisle, where shoppers choose fresh fruit from B.C. over fruit from Washington or California. So, why do governments buy advertising from American tech giants? Shouldn't British Columbia adopt advertising procurement policies to support trusted Canadian news brands? This has been done in other jurisdictions and it is working. Last year, Ontario's Progressive Conservative premier, Doug Ford, directed that 25 per cent of his government's advertising spending, including that of Ontario's Crown corporations, be set aside for news publications. On the other side of the border and of the political aisle, then New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, mandated that city agencies allocate at least 50 per cent of their print and digital advertising to community and ethnic media. According to The Center for Community Media at CUNY, 'The impact of this policy cannot be overstated: In its first five years, it injected more than $72 million into the local community media sector. This helped critical information reach New Yorkers who rely on community media as their primary source of news, and added an important source of revenue for these outlets.' The not-for-profit Rebuild Local News found that advertising set-asides, done right, have the following benefits: First, they can provide substantial revenue to local news organizations and help community journalism thrive. Second, it is money the government is already spending — not new money — so it does not require enlarging state or local budgets or raising taxes. Third, government messages can reach a full range of residents, including those who may not be using larger media. Fourth, as advertising, it is payment for a service rendered, not a subsidy per se. Finally, advertising in community news helps government be more effective by reaching audiences through community and ethnic publications that are more trusted in their communities. According to a recent study, advertising in trustworthy environments leads to a 25 per cent lift in brand rating. News publishers in aggregate are seen as 35 per cent above the baseline level of trust across information environments. And local news publishers see an additional 16 per cent gain in perceived trustworthiness among local audiences. It's time for B.C. to adopt a minimum 25 per cent set-aside for government advertising, as well as at Crown corporations like B.C. Hydro, B.C. Transit, and the B.C. Lottery Corporation, to help preserve local journalism jobs and keep local and community newspapers open. And those journalists keep communities and residents informed, so they can effectively participate in democratic processes. It would also send an important signal to private sector advertisers about keeping ad dollars here in B.C., rather than sending them to Big Tech behemoths in California, whose algorithms amplify misinformation and disinformation. That's the view of U.S. President Donald Trump, his ambassador to Canada told a Washington state audience on Monday morning — comments that drew a rebuke from B.C. Story continues below advertisement A number of Canadian provinces, including British Columbia and Ontario, have pulled U.S. liquor from their shelves amid the trade dispute and Trump's repeated musings about making Canada the 51st state, potentially through the use of 'economic force.' Canadian travel to the U.S. has also plummeted, with the number of visits by land and air falling for six consecutive months. Earlier on Monday, a bipartisan delegation of U.S. senators travelled to Ottawa to plead with tourists to return to the U.S. and tell Canadians 'we miss you.' Canada remains locked in intense negotiations with the United States over a new trade and security deal, and on Sunday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick vowed that the tariffs on Canada were here to stay. 'The president understands that we need to open the markets. Canada is not open to us. They need to open their market. Unless they're willing to open their market, they're going to pay a tariff,' Lutnick told CBS's Face the Nation. Trump has threatened a new 35 per cent tariff on Canadian products that would take effect on Aug. 1, along with a new 50 per cent tariff on copper and a 200 per cent tariff on pharmaceuticals. Canada is already dealing with 25 per cent U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum.
