‘Superman' Reignites Interest in ‘Man of Steel' and ‘Peacemaker'

Gizmodoa day ago
Now that Superman is out in theaters, audiences have come out of it wanting to see more of him. And what better place to get more of Supes than HBO Max?
According to a recent Deadline report, viewership for Man of Steel, the 1978 Superman, and the Christopher Reeve documentary Super/Man have all received massive viewership spikes in the past week. Where Steel's week-over-week viewership grew by 218% and Superman: The Movie by 322%, Super/Man had the biggest growth at 1,206%. All three make sense: Man of Steel was the last solo Supes movie, and James Gunn's film is courting fans who saw and loved the Reeve films.
Interestingly, this knockback effect has also hit Peacemaker, Gunn's TV spinoff for The Suicide Squad. The show's second season arrives in August, and in light of the film's cameos featuring John Cena's titular antihero and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., viewership grew 91% week-over-week for season one. Deadline's report only mentions that show and three films, so it's difficult to know how or if other pieces of Superman media like Creature Commandos and the unconnected Superman & Lois and My Adventures with Superman—or heck, even Smallville and Superman Returns—got spikes of their own.
Regardless, it's certainly another point in the win column for Warner Bros. and the superhero himself. Between this and the news of rising interest in adopting dogs, it's safe to say Superman's impact extends beyond making money. (Which it continues to do.)

David Letterman Shreds CBS With Brutal Spelling Lesson Over Colbert Cancellation

David Letterman slammed CBS using a not-so-subtle jab on his YouTube channel on Monday after the network announced that it would cancel 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,' a franchise he began over 30 years ago. 'You can't spell CBS without BS,' wrote Letterman in the caption of a 20-minute video compilation of moments where he criticized the network during his 'Late Show' run. The upload to Letterman's channel comes less than a week after CBS revealed that it would end 'The Late Show' — which he hosted from 1993 until his 2015 retirement — in May 2026, claiming the move was 'purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.' While the program reportedly faced financialchallenges in recent years, critics have accused CBS of making a politically motivated decision as Colbert — a frequent critic of Donald Trump — recently mocked the network's parent company over a $16 million settlement with the president. The timing of the settlement raised questions as Paramount Global has sought to win over the Federal Communications Commission's chair, a Project 2025 contributor who has embraced Trump, on a multibillion-dollar deal to merge with Skydance Media. Check out Letterman's video, titled 'CBS: The Tiffany Network,' here. Letterman, a critic of Trump who has expressed regret over his interviews with the then-real estate developer during his decades at 'The Late Show,' joins a number of other late-night figures who have weighed in on the shock CBS decision. Jimmy Kimmel, in an Instagram Stories update while on vacation from his ABC show last week, showed love to Colbert before dropping a blistering jab directed at his network. 'Fuck you and all your Sheldons CBS,' he wrote. 'Last Week Tonight' host John Oliver and NBC late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers have all expressed sadness over the news in recent days, as well. Oliver, Fallon, Meyers and 'Daily Show' host Jon Stewart are reportedly expected to show support for Colbert in an appearance on Monday's episode of 'The Late Show,' according to Related... Jon Stewart Sings the Gospel of ‘Go F– Yourself' to Paramount Over Colbert Cancelation

In a move that sure looked like it had been coordinated with his friend and former co-star, Jon Stewart had a message to Paramount Global following the cancelation of 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert': 'Go f— yourself.' But unlike Colbert, who said it almost laconically about Donald Trump during his own monologue on Monday, Stewart sang it with the help of a gospel choir backing him. 'South Park' creators reach $1.5 billion streaming deal with Paramount

The creators of Comedy Central's "South Park" reached a breakthrough Monday in the tense negotiations over the streaming rights of the long-running satirical cartoon. Paramount agreed to buy the global streaming rights for "South Park" to bring the show to the company's digital service, Paramount+, for the first time in the U.S., according to three people close to the negotiations who were not authorized to comment. The deal with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, through their Park County production company, values the global streaming rights at $300 million a year, according to two of the people close to the agreement, who could not discuss the matter publicly because the deal is not final. The five-year deal means the show will fetch $1.5 billion for streaming alone. The sum preserves the show's status as one of the world's most valuable TV franchises. Paramount also wanted to avoid any public relations fiascoes when Stone and Parker take the stage Thursday at fan-fest Comic-Con in San Diego. Separately, the two sides have been negotiating an overall deal for Parker and Stone, to renew their previous $900 million pact that kept the show on Comedy Central with new episodes through 2027. Parker and Stone's team are seeking a higher valuation in order to produce new seasons. This is a developing story.
