Commissioners change one voting place and make two name changes
The Ohatchee Baptist Church will no longer be a voting place. The residents will go to the Ohatchee Senior Center, 7805 AL-77, which is behind the city's town hall and connected to the Ohatchee Public Library.
In Piedmont, voters will still go to the same place only with a new name. The recreation building, where voting has taken place under a different name and address, is the Clyde H. Pike Civic Center, 500 Mill Street.
Also, a name change for the DeArmanville residents means the voting place is now called the DeArmanville Methodist Church, located at 370 DeArmanville Road. The voters will still go to the same address.
Among several resolutions passed that were routine in nature, the commissioners passed a resolution to relinquish the Commission's partial interest with a quit claim deed for the Noble Street Park, 1102 Noble Street. Prior to the change, Calhoun County and Anniston City shared ownership. The change took place because the city has made several improvements to the park and will be responsible for maintaining it.
Certifications of recognition and a proclamation were made at the meeting.
The commissioners made presentations of recognition to the 4-H students on the Calhoun County Extension Agency's agriculture team.
The director of the team is Amy Hegeman who explained the purpose of the trip.
'We took two teams, a junior and a senior team, to the Southeastern Livestock Exposition in Montgomery,' she said. 'They competed in the Youth Livestock Judging Contest.'
Previously, the students had prepared for the competition at the Calhoun County Ag Center and learned the best ways to evaluate an animal's structure and muscles.
The purpose of the trip, Hegeman said, was to judge how well the students had learned to evaluate cattle, swine, sheep and goats. At the competition, they were scored on how closely their scores compared to the animals' official rankings.
Several of the students described the experience and thanked the commissions for their support and for providing a van to travel to the event.
The commissioners also read a proclamation recognizing April as Child Abuse Prevention Month.
They presented the proclamation to Courtney Clark, Calhoun County's director of the Department of Human Resources that focuses on preventing child abuse.
The proclamation, presented by commissioner Danny Shears, read in part, 'We can build a future where every child grows up safe, healthy and filled with hope.'
Clark thanked the commissioners.
'Child abuse is a hundred percent preventable,' she said. 'It takes each one of us for that to happen, and Calhoun County DHR is here 24-7. If you see something, say something. We're available and on call, even after hours. Make a report, even if you don't think it's something, let us investigate it, assess it, and determine if the report is legit to make sure that these kids of Calhoun County are safe.'
Other staff members at DHR who attended the proclamation ceremony were Nena Poe, senior special work supervisor; Patricia Anderson, caseworker; Brandi Welton, program supervisor; and Britney Moman, program supervisor.

Senator says U.S. tariffs from Trump White House damaging for Washington state
Opponents from Washington state of U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff threats against Canada are vowing to fight, saying the ongoing trade war has delivered a heavy blow to American border communities. In a conference call led by Democrat U.S. Senator Patty Murray that included British Columbia Premier David Eby, Murray said regions such as Whatcom County bordering Canada get about 12 per cent of taxable retail income from Canadian consumers. Murray said the drop in Canadian tourists visiting her state has also resulted in economic uncertainty among ferry operators and in Point Roberts, where residents cannot access the U.S. mainland without travelling through Canada. Eby said it is difficult to continue asking British Columbians to keep their money in Canada but the U.S. boycotts are necessary in the trade war despite circumstances being "miserable" on both sides of the border. Earlier this week, Eby responded to statements by the U.S. Ambassador to Canada who called Canadians mean and nasty over their travel and alcohol boycott, saying Canadians would be "proud" to be considered mean for standing up for their sovereignty. Edmund Schweitzer, founder of Washington-based digital device maker Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, said during the conference call that his company is predicting the tariffs will cost it US$100 million in "unanticipated federal taxes." Schweitzer said that means each of the 7,000 employees who co-own the company will take a financial hit of US$14,000 from the tariffs. "President Trump seems to have created the 51st state that he was talking about, which is the great state of uncertainty," he said Wednesday. "And this is affecting all of us." Murray said she is working in the U.S. Congress to bring Democrats and Republicans to join in the fight to wrestle back the power to set tariffs from the White House and urges other Americans to join the cause. "Who is responsible for this, and we all need to remember this, is the president of the United States who started this," Murray said. "We are raising our voices to say, 'Enough is enough … stop this." B.C. is among several Canadian provinces that banned the sale of U.S. alcohol from government-run stores after the trade war began, and industry groups say such sales in Canada have fallen sharply in March and April. Statistics Canada figures show the number of Canadians returning home by car from south of the border fell to just over 33 per cent in June compared with the same period last year, and return trips by air fell to just over 22 per cent during the same period. "No one wants this," Murray said of the falling numbers and economic uncertainty. "We did not ask for this. It's been imposed on us. And I think that the premier is making it clear he has to make it painful for the United States. "That doesn't change our relationship with British Columbia. We've always been friends, allies. We have had challenges in the past, but we talk to each other. We work through it, and that's what we both want at the end of this." Australia lifts biosecurity restrictions on US beef, AFR reports
SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia has lifted its biosecurity restrictions on beef imports from the U.S., the Australian Financial Review (AFR) reported on Thursday, likely removing a key concern for U.S. President Donald Trump's administration over bilateral trade. Australia informed the U.S. of its decision after a review of the curbs it initiated more than 18 months ago, before Trump was elected for a second term, the AFR said in its report, citing an unidentified government source. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The AFR report said Albanese's Labor government will use the easing of rules to argue its case for the United States to wind back 50% tariffs on steel and aluminium and Trump's threat to impose a 200% tariff on pharmaceuticals. Albanese in April had ruled out relaxing Australia's strict biosecurity rules during tariff talks with the United States. Trump in April singled out the trade disparity on Australian beef after the country's beef exports to the United States surged last year, reaching A$4 billion ($2.64 billion) amid a slump in U.S. beef production. Since 2003, Australia has curbed entry of U.S. beef after detecting bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease. But Australia allows entry if the cattle were born, raised and slaughtered in the United States, though few shippers can prove these requirements, as cattle frequently move between the United States, Canada and Mexico. Australia views its strict biosecurity rules as safeguarding its disease-free cattle, helping it preserve access to lucrative markets such as Japan and South Korea, while Australian beef is prized by U.S. fast food chains for its lower fat content and competitive prices.
