England consider Archer and Atkinson recall after heavy India defeat

France 2415 hours ago
India levelled the five-match series at 1-1 with a crushing 336-run win in the second Test on Sunday's fifth day.
And within hours of the thumping loss, England added Surrey quick Atkinson to their squad for Lord's.
Atkinson is fit again after suffering hamstring trouble against Zimbabwe in May and could join forces for the first time with Archer, who trained with England in Birmingham ahead of what promises to be the express quick's first Test following four years of injury-induced exile.
Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue could be the two bowlers to make away after plenty of overs against an India side who've scored nearly 1,900 runs, including five individual hundreds, in the opening two games of this series.
Stokes, as he'd done during England's five-wicket win in the first Test at Headingley, sent India into bat at Edgbaston.
But having seen India reduced to 211-5, Stokes became increasingly helpless in the field as the tourists piled up 567, with opposing captain Shubman Gill making an outstanding 269.
"At 200-5 we were happy but we just weren't able to blast them open," said Stokes after England were dismissed for 271 on the final day. "They ended up getting a big first innings total after us having a good start."
'Decision we have to make'
The all-rounder added: "It's no secret that we have spent some time in the field and bowled some overs in the first two games so we'll have to see how everyone pulls up over the next two days. With it being a quick turnaround there probably will be a decision we have to make."
Akash Deep, only playing at Edgbaston after India rested Jasprit Bumrah, the world's top-ranked Test bowler, proved far more effective than any member of England's attack on a largely placid pitch with a career-best match haul of 10-147.
"I thought Akash exposed that crack last night and this (Sunday) morning," said Stokes. "It was incredibly skilful to hone in on that zone while still changing his angles on the crease."
England's bowlers, meanwhile, now have the tough task of stemming new India captain Shubman Gill's extraordinary run-spree.
Not content with his first-innings effort, Gill made 161 second time around at Edgbaston as he became the first batsman in 148 years of Test history to score a double century and a 150 in the same match.
The 25-year-old Gill, who marked his first Test as skipper with a century at Headingley, has now scored 585 runs in the series at a colossal average of 146.5.
"He's had some two games, hasn't he?," said Stokes, with a rueful smile, of Gill. "You've got got to give your opposition credit when it's due and for him to bang out as many runs as he has done in this game has been pretty special."

India captain Gill hailed back home after 'brilliant' Test win

Gill, who notched a century in a losing cause in the first Test at Headingley, hit new heights in scoring 269 and 161 to set up a crushing victory by 336 runs which leaves the five-match series finely poised. It was India's first win in nine Tests at the Birmingham venue, following seven previous defeats and one draw. "New captain, new India", The Indian Express newspaper splashed across its front page. Gill, 25, became the youngest Indian Test skipper to register an overseas win in just his second match in charge following the retirement of Rohit Sharma. he eclipsed Sunil Gavaskar, who was 26 when he led India to victory over New Zealand at Auckland in 1976. Gill came into the series with concerns over his batting average overseas, which had been less than 30, but he has shut down all the noise by stroking a remarkable 585 runs from four innings. Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar called it a "Shublime innings from the man of the moment," offering his congratulations for "powering India to a brilliant Test victory." Tendulkar, writing on social media, added: "India's approach was to take England out of this game and force them to play differently, making sure that there would only be one winner." 'Drowning Street' Fast bowler Akash Deep took a match haul of 10 wickets after replacing the rested Jasprit Bumrah as England were bowled out for 271 in their chase of 608 on day five. "What impressed me most about the bowlers was the length they bowled", Tendulkar said. Deep took 6-99 in the second innings, including bowling the world's top-ranked Test batsman Joe Root with a delivery that nipped away sharply and was called the "ball of the series" by Tendulkar. Batting great Virat Kohli, who also retired before the series, said: "Great victory for India at Edgbaston" and wrote that India had been "fearless and kept pushing England to the wall." "Brilliantly led by Shubman with the bat and in the field... special mention to (Mohammed) Siraj and Akash for the way they bowled," he added. Former captain Sourav Ganguly praised Gill's performance and India's superior bowling attack, calling Akash and Siraj "workhorses". Indian newspapers had a field day with an outpouring of joyous puns. The Times of India said: "Deep's 10 send Eng to Drowning Street" and "Edg-bastian breached." The third Test of the five-match series begins on Thursday at Lord's.

Three things we learned from the second England-India Test

Shubman Gill, in just his second Test as India captain, led from the front with innings of 269 and 161 as the tourists levelled a five-match series at 1-1. Below AFP Sport looks at three talking points that emerged from a ruthless performance by India. Run-hungry Gill does it again Captaincy can be either a boost or a burden to a player's career but, right now, it's pretty apparent what it is doing for Shubman Gill. The 25-year-old arrived in England with a Test average of under 36. Yet in just two matches this series he has scored 585 runs at a colossal average of 146.25 after his 147 in the opening match at Headingley. And at Edgbaston he became the first batsman in 148 years of Test cricket to make scores of 250 and 150 in the same match. It wasn't just Gill's sheer volume of runs that impressed shrewd judges, however. In the first innings, Gill batted for some eight-and-a-half hours to build an all-but impregnable position for India with a majestic display of classical stroke-play, particularly through the offside. Yet in the second, with India in search of quick runs ahead of a declaration, Gill struck several audacious shots worthy of dynamic team-mate Rishabh Pant in a 161 that took him a mere 162 balls. "Just as incredible as the numbers are his (Gill's) concentration levels," wrote former England captain Nasser Hussain in his Daily Mail column. "Yes, the pitches at Headingley and Edgbaston have both been good for batting, but you still need focus. Look at England's top order, who have been unable to match way of a serious bonus, he has elegance too." India catch up in the field Gill's efforts could have been undone had India fielded as badly as they did during a five-wicket loss in the series opener at Headingley. Yet they were far sharper at Edgbaston, with Gill -- despite a marathon batting stint -- holding a superb slip catch to dismiss England opener Ben Duckett for a duck as the recalled Akash Deep took the first of his 10 wickets in the match. Gill's example proved infectious, with Mohammed Siraj clutching a superb one-handed catch after diving full-length at midwicket to dismiss England tailender Josh Tongue as India closed in on victory. Bashir leaves England in a spin Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir finished with unwanted match figures of 5-286 at Edgbaston -- the most expensive for England since 1950 and the third-most costly in the team's Test history. Picked on potential after a handful of first-class matches, and now struggling to get a game with county side Somerset, the 21-year-old impressed the England hierarchy with a high-release point indicative of an ability to get turn and bounce. But six of his eight wickets in this series have come via catches in the deep, with the others a stumping of a tail-end batsman and a skyed slog he caught himself. England captain Ben Stokes has long championed Bashir's ability, but he would welcome a few top-order wickets from his frontline spinner in next week's third Test at Lord's. © 2025 AFP

Alcaraz vows to avoid Murray after defeat on golf course

The two-time defending Wimbledon champion revealed last week that he and the retired British star were level at 1-1 after two games of golf. Murray tweeted on Saturday: "We played the deciding match this afternoon. Maybe ask him what happened after the next match." Alcaraz, who had just beaten Russian 14th seed Andrey Rublev to reach the fourth round at the All England Club on Sunday, pretended he had forgotten his defeat. "I didn't remember playing any matches yesterday," joked the 22-year-old during his on-court interview. "I have to show up. I have to say he beat me. "We were playing in his home, so it could be really bad for him if I beat him in his home so I let him win once. "But I lost against him as a player, as a coach, on the golf course, so I'm not going to play against him anymore." Murray, 38, retired last year after a career in which he won three Grand Slams, including two Wimbledon titles. The two men met twice on the tennis tour, with one win apiece. Murray also helped mastermind a win for Novak Djokovic against Alcaraz when he was coaching the Serb at this year's Australian Open.
