Man accused of grandson's murder carried him ‘like a ragdoll', court hears
A man charged with murdering his grandson has told a court he had 'no excuse' for holding the toddler 'like a ragdoll'.
Michael Ives, 47, and his wife Kerry, 46, are accused of fatally injuring Ethan Ives-Griffiths when he lived with them at their home in Garden City, Flintshire, north Wales, before his death on August 16 2021.
The couple blame their daughter, Ethan's mother, Shannon Ives, 28, for the two-year-old's death, Mold Crown Court has heard.
On Monday, Ives was shown CCTV from the back garden of the house of him carrying the two-year-old by his upper arm on August 4 that year.
He said that after picking him up from a trampoline, he held him up to avoid nettles in the back garden.
Gordon Cole KC, defending Shannon Ives, asked him: 'You held him like a rag doll, didn't you?'
Ives replied: 'Yeah.'
Asked why he had carried him in that way, he said: 'No reason.'
He added: 'There's no excuse, I know.'
When Mr Cole asked if Ives had liked his grandson, he replied: 'Yes, obviously.'
Earlier in the day, Ives told the court Shannon was 'quick-tempered' and would hit her son after they both moved into the family home earlier that year.
He said on the evening of August 14 2021, Shannon had taken Ethan into the downstairs bedroom of the house to feed him and he later saw a red mark on the corner of Ethan's eye.
When he asked his daughter where the mark had come from, she said 'I've not f****** done it', Ives told the court.
Later that evening, he was in the living room with his wife Kerry and Ethan while Shannon was upstairs on the phone.
He said: 'I've stood Ethan up and as I've stood him up his legs have just gone.
'They've gone like jelly and he couldn't stand up.'
He said Ethan went to fall backwards, so he reached out to grab his arms.
David Elias KC, defending Ives, asked him: 'Had you hit him in any way?'
He replied: 'No.'
Mr Elias asked: 'Had you grabbed him?'
Ives said: 'Only to stop him from falling backwards.'
He said he laid the toddler on the floor and rubbed his chest before taking him to the back door for fresh air.
Asked if he did anything to get help from the emergency services, he said: 'No, I was trying to bring him round.'
Ethan was taken to hospital and died two days later with 'serious, catastrophic head injuries', the court has heard.
The jury has been told Ethan's fatal head injury was caused by deliberate use of force, which may have included an element of forceful shaking.
Ives told the court that on August 13 2021, he was in the living room making a cigarette when he heard 'contact' that 'sounded like Shannon hitting Ethan'.
He said: 'All I heard is a bang. I turned round and Ethan's lying on the living room floor.'
He said Shannon had left the room and Ethan was unresponsive for a couple of minutes before he started to come round.
He added: 'He sat up and seemed fine.'
Ives said Ethan's mother would call him a 'little bastard' and tell him 'f*** off into care or live with your dad'.
He said: 'I told her there was no need for that.'
Michael and Kerry Ives, of Kingsley Road, Garden City, deny murder, an alternative count of causing or allowing the death of a child, and cruelty to a person under 16.
Shannon Ives, of Nant Garmon, Mold, denies causing or allowing the death of a child and cruelty to a person under 16.
The trial will continue on Tuesday.

Husband of Suzanne Morphew to appear in court to face murder charge a second time
The husband of a woman who disappeared on Mother's Day 2020 is set to appear in court in Colorado on Tuesday for the first time since being charged again with murder in her death. Barry Morphew was arrested June 20 in Arizona after being newly indicted in the death of Suzanne Morphew, three years after the initial case against him was dropped because of prosecutorial issues with evidence. Authorities announced Monday that he had arrived at the jail in the small southern Colorado city of Alamosa, not far from where Suzanne Morphew's skeletal remains were found off a dirt road in September 2023. Her remains were discovered accidentally as authorities were searching for another missing woman a year after prosecutors dropped their initial prosecution of Morphew. A 2024 autopsy report said Suzanne Morphew died of 'unspecified means' but ruled her death a homicide. While her remains showed no signs of trauma, investigators found in her bone marrow a drug cocktail used to tranquilize wildlife that her husband had a prescription for, according to the indictment. Barry Morphew has maintained his innocence since his wife disappeared. Two attorneys listed in court documents as representing Morphew at Tuesday's hearing, David Beller and Jane Fisher-Byrialsen, did not immediately return telephone or email messages seeking comment. Beller has previously criticized prosecutors for allowing 'their predetermined conclusion to lead their search for evidence.' The mystery surrounding Suzanne Morphew began when the 49-year-old mother of two daughters, who lived near the small mountain community of Salida, Colorado, was reported missing on Mother's Day 2020. Her mountain bike and helmet were found in separate spots not far from her home, but investigators suspected the bike was purposefully thrown into a ravine because there were no indications of a crash. A week after his wife went missing, Barry Morphew posted a video on Facebook pleading for her safe return and the case quickly drew attention. In May 2021, prosecutors charged him with murder. They subsequently dropped the case in 2022 just as Morphew was about to stand trial. A judge had barred prosecutors from calling key witnesses after the attorneys repeatedly failed to follow rules for turning over evidence in Morphew's favor. The latest case is being prosecuted by a different prosecutor in a separate judicial district where Suzanne Morphew's remains were found, a rural area about 40 miles (65 kilometers) south of the Morphews' home. Investigators found at the site a port through which Suzanne Morphew could receive medicine to treat follicular lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that she had. They also found biking clothes similar to what she was known to wear. Based on the condition of the remains and clothes, a forensic anthropologist theorized that the body likely decomposed elsewhere before being moved to the site, according to Morphew's new indictment.

Daycare worker Joshua Brown is unmasked after being charged with more than 70 child sex offences - as new details emerge
Joshua Brown was pictured sporting blue hair with his boyfriend around the time he is accused of committing more than 70 sex offences at the childcare centre where he worked. About 1,200 children are being urged to get tested for infectious diseases after Brown's alleged offending came to light on Tuesday. Brown is facing charges including the sexual penetration of a child and producing child abuse material over his time at Creative Garden Early Learning Centre Point Cook, where he worked between October 2021 and February 2024. In December 2021, Brown's partner posted a photo of the pair which featured the alleged pedophile grinning with pink and blue dyed hair. Police are also investigating allegations of other offending at a childcare centre in Essendon. Brown worked at at a total of 20 childcare centres over an eight-year period between January 2017 and May 2025 and authorities have contacted 2,600 families of children who attended the centres in a bid to have them tested for diseases. The charges, which were revealed by Victoria Police on Tuesday, include the sexual penetration of a child, producing child abuse material and recklessly contaminating goods to cause alarm or anxiety. His alleged victims attended a daycare centre in Point Cook, in Melbourne's southwest, between April 2022 and January 2023. Brown was employed at 20 childcare centres over an eight-year period between January 2017 and May 2025. Detectives are prioritising investigations into alleged offending at a second childcare centre in Essendon, in the city's northwest. Police have contacted 2,600 families of children who attended the daycare centres while Brown was employed. Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen said she was 'sickened by these allegations of abuse'. Brown has remained in custody since his arrest in mid-May. His Point Cook home was raided by police shortly after an investigation was launched earlier that same month. He was not known to police before his arrest and had a valid Working With Children Check, which has since been cancelled. Brown will next appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on September 15. Minister for Children Lizzie Blandthorn said an investigation to see if there was anything educators could have done would begin immediately. She said the department will consider other security measures including the introduction of security cameras. 'Childcare is regulated in a national context… it's complex, but there has been an occasion over the last period of time in which jurisdictions have questioned the adequacy of the national law and have been working with the Commonwealth on how we can improve it,' she said. 'One of the areas for example… that I would like to see brought forward is a national system for registration for workers.' Acting Commander Janet Stevenson said the case had been 'deeply distressing'. She did not reveal what sparked the police investigation but assured the public no other childcare workers were alleged to be involved. 'We know there are potentially people out there who have information about this investigation that they wish to pass on to police,' she said. 'This may be people who had children at a centre where the man worked or staff who may have worked with him and noticed particular behaviours.'
