Unsurprisingly, the TBug looks somewhat nicer than my Baja Bug, because Twisted are people who are used to doing things properly. The interior looks trimmed beautifully, the stance is just so (I'm tempted to have a word with the front end of mine and a grinder) and there's a reinforced chassis, a new engine, new electrics and LED lights that don't look daft.
The power output has been about doubled over the original, but it's still making less than 80bhp, so it isn't a fast car – but that doesn't matter a bit. 'What makes the TBug special is that it makes you smile every time you slide behind the wheel,' says Twisted founder Charles Fawcett.
'In a world of increasingly serious and complex vehicles, there's something wonderfully refreshing about that.' As they might have said in the 1970s, I can dig that.
Unlike Twisted Defenders and Suzuki Jimnys, this car exists in the 'special projects' bit of the company's offerings. Lots of personalisation and customisation is on offer and it's the sort of thing you could get lost for days in with the designers – although Twisted has made three for sale already to its thinking, in grey, green and yellow. You can spend around £95,000.

Vespa maker Piaggio's profit falls 42% in first half of 2025
July 29 (Reuters) - Italy's Piaggio ( opens new tab said on Tuesday its net profit fell 42.2% to 30.1 million euros ($34.84 million) in the first half of 2025 in a contracting market for motor vehicles. Piaggio, known for its iconic Vespa scooters, sold 238,400 vehicles between January and June this year, compared to 270,100 in the first half of 2024. "In historical moments like these, with international trade disputes and increased geopolitical tensions, being able to remain flexible, controlling liquidity and financial management, is essential," CEO Michele Colaninno said in a statement. The manufacturer said its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) fell 15.3% year-on-year to 147.1 million euros, with an EBITDA margin of 17.3%. The group also pledged to distribute an interim dividend of 4 euro cents per share on its 2025 results. ($1 = 0.8639 euros)

M5 roadworks on track as Wellington businesses impacted
Major resurfacing work that left some business owners "petrified" is causing less disruption than expected, says the local weeks into the M5 Junction 26 closure at Wellington, Somerset Council said it was on track and on budget to complete the £5.7m upgrade project work by locals and businesses were not happy with the closure of the junction and the A38 link road when it was announced. One trader since says it has been a "nightmare" to travel up and down the councillor Richard Wilkins, lead member for transport and waste at Somerset Council, said: "Of course, people were extremely worried but the roads have coped really well." Mr Wilkins added: "We're still on track, the work is progressing. We should be finished on time. About 8,000 tonnes of asphalt have already gone down and that's of a total of about 16,000."We'll get this done, get it finished and have a fantastic new road at the end of it." Seb Toon, owner of TLC Garage Services, said the closure had had "quite a bit of an impact"."Jobs we normally do on the motorway that were previously a 19-mile (31km) round-trip are now more like 40 miles (64km)," he added."It's taking us an hour sometimes to get back from Taunton to here, which has been a bit of a nightmare." Meanwhile, Emma Slocom, director of Apple Campers at Foxmoor Business Park in Wellington, said it had been "harder" for some of their customers who come from Bristol and Cornwall."We're based at Foxmore business park which is just off junction 26 so it's been a big disruption but it's not been as bad as we expected," Ms Slocom added.

Kimi Antonelli reveals ‘really nice' words of wisdom from Lewis Hamilton
Kimi Antonelli has revealed the advice Lewis Hamilton gave him amid an emotional weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix. Antonelli, the 18-year-old Italian who replaced Hamilton at Mercedes this season, has endured a difficult run of F1 races since finishing on the podium in Canada last month, retiring from two grands prix and finishing 16th at Spa on Sunday. Prior to Sunday's race, Hamilton was spotted leaving the Mercedes motorhome as he paid Antonelli, 22 years his junior, a supportive visit. Antonelli was emotional in the media pen after being knocked out in Q1 of qualifying on Saturday and, a day later, the Italian revealed what Hamilton said to him amid a tricky period. 'He came to say hi to the team and definitely we had a couple of words,' Antonelli said. 'He was telling me to keep my head up and that it's normal to have bad weekends. 'And to just keep believing. It was really nice.' Hamilton, who was arguably the last driver to make his F1 debut with a top team with McLaren in 2007, threw his support behind the teenager. 'I can't imagine what it's like at 18, or try to imagine what it's like at 18, to do what he's doing,' Ferrari driver Hamilton told Sky Sports F1. 'He's been doing fantastic. But to be thrown in at the deep end at 18… he hadn't even had his driving licence when he first started racing. 'I think it's a lot on someone's shoulders. He's doing a great job and he's got a great group of people around him. So, I think you've just got to take it in your stride, which I think he is. 'And he's got Bono [Peter Bonnington, who used to work with Hamilton] by his side. He doesn't have anyone better.' Hamilton joked in Thursday's press conference that he could help Antonelli 'work' Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, as the Italian eyes a new contract with the Silver Arrows. Wolff, with Max Verstappen set to stay at Red Bull for 2026, admitted it is now his 'priority' to keep his current driver line-up of Antonelli and George Russell for next year. Antonelli is seventh in the world championship after 13 races, 94 points behind teammate Russell.
