Massive traffic jams feared at Pandeshwar level crossing after commissioning of Mahakalipadpu twin RuBs in Mangaluru
'After the RuBs are commissioned, all kinds of vehicles between the Central Business District (CBD) and southern parts of Mangaluru, including Kasargod, will start using the Jeppinamogaru-Morgan's Gate-Mangaladevi stretch. With the Pandeshwar Level Crossing on Mangaladevi Road still operational, one can expect massive traffic jams whenever the LC gate is closed,' said Guru Prasad, a resident of Bolara.
Mr. Prasad told The Hindu that though the goods shed was shifted from Bunder Yard to Ullal, Southern Railway's Palakkad division continues to use Bunder Yard for stabling passenger trains. As a consequence, the Pandeshwar LC Gate gets closed a few times in a day.
With the narrow LC gate coupled with an increase of vehicular traffic after opening of Mahakalipadpu twin RuB, vehicles might pile up till Mangaladevi temple and A. B. Shetty Circle on both the ends, he fears.
Relocate staff quarters
He said citizens, through then member of parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel and the present MP Captain Brijesh Chowta, had urged the Southern Railway to relocate its staff quarters and offices not connected with train operations to Bunder Yard. These offices are located next to Mangaluru Central Railway Station.
This was because the railways had already ruled out the possibility of constructing an RuB at Pandeshwar following the presence of a major storm water drain while a Rail Over Bridge is not possible for want of land on either side of the road.
The only alternative to avoid traffic snarls is to halt operation of trains to Bunder Yard and eliminate the LC Gate, he said.
RuBs will be commissioned by end of May
A senior Mangaluru Smart City Limited officer told The Hindu that everything is in place to commission the RuBs by the end of May. While the Railways pushed the last of the four concrete boxes beneath the Shoranur-Mangaluru Central line on April 17, it was providing finishing touches inside the boxes, including concrete paving and pedestrian paths.
MSLCL has commenced work on the approach roads, which should be completed soon, the officer said.

Protests outside Kolkata CBI office demanding justice for RG Kar victim
Kolkata Protesters held demonstrations outside the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Kolkata on Friday (August 1, 2025) demanding justice for RG Kar victim. Next month, August 9 will mark a year after the crime as parents of the victim and protestors keep seeking justice. The protest was organised by Abhaya Mancha (a protest forum formed to demand justice for the RG Kar victim) and Joint Platform of Doctors. The protestors questioned why almost a year later CBI has not been able to file a supplementary chargesheet and the arrest still stands at one. Protestors tied brooms outside the CBI's office gate and sang protest songs calling for justice for the victim (popularly known as Abhaya). The brooms were a symbol of the protestors demand to 'clean out the CBI office of corruption so that they can deliver due justice.' Abhaya's father said that the other two people arrested in relation to the crime, Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar and former officer-in-charge of Tala police station Abhijit Mondal got bail because the CBI failed to file a chargesheet within the 90-day statutory period. The two were arrested for 'misleading the investigation' of the case and delay in filing the FIR. 'We doubt if they will ever file a supplementary chargesheet. They claim they are investigating a bigger conspiracy, but I will not be alive to witness the results, they will continue the investigation for a lifetime,' Abhaya's father told The Hindu on Friday. Dr Subarna Goswami a part of Abhaya Mancha and one of the forerunners of the RG Kar protests said that the CBI's failure to investigate the rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar medical college is not an isolated incident. 'It is a reflection of the larger fascist structure where the ruling parties will continue to commit repeated violence against women's bodies and the state structure will use all its pillars to protect the criminals. This lack of justice, this impunity is actually planned - so that people forget, become discouraged, so that protests become silent,' Dr Goswami a senior doctor added. In an earlier conversation with The Hindu, the family had expressed their dissatisfaction with the CBI's ongoing probe into the case. In the rape and murder of the RG Kar victim, a civic volunteer Sanjay Roy has been arrested and sent to lifetime imprisonment. But both parents of the victim and protestors have claimed on multiple occasions that there was more than one perpetrator in the case. On August 9, 2024, a post-graduate female trainee doctor was found dead in a seminar hall of the chest medicine department on the fourth floor of the emergency building of the State-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The whole State erupted in protests as the details of the crime sent shockwaves across the country.

No need for Karnataka to give land for cheap to IT firms: Priyank Kharge
Karnataka does not need to give away land for cheap to attract IT and technology industry firms as the State 'incentivised IT as a sunrise industry 30 years back,' while others are 'incentivising it now,' the State's Minister for Electronics, Information Technology & Biotechnology and Rural Development & Panchayat Raj Priyank Kharge told The Hindu in an interview. Mr. Kharge was speaking at the sidelines of an event in the capital to promote the Bengaluru Tech Summit, due to be held in November. 'If my counterpart in another State is giving large tracts of land for free, that doesn't mean that I need to do that too,' Mr. Kharge said, arguing that due to Karnataka and particularly Bengaluru's strong presence in the IT sector, such sops were not needed. Interstate competition 'Competition with other countries and States [in IT and electronics] has always been there,' Mr. Kharge said. 'We compete with Tamil Nadu on manufacturing, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on ITES, and Maharashtra for FDI. We're also extremely competitive with countries like Indonesia and Vietnam, where there is potential for smaller hubs of manufacturing and technology firms. This constant competition is what keeps us ahead of the curve for reskilling, pushing for better policies, and better infrastructure.' On the 1,777 acres of land in Devanahalli that was earmarked for an aerospace park, Mr. Kharge said that the land had never been concretely notified for any particular industry or company. 'That land was fertile and there were negotiations, and look, this is a democracy, right,' Mr. Kharge said. 'You come up and say, there was a mistake in the notification, and we don't want to give [the land] now as it's fertile. It's a socio-economic demographic that we have to cater to, so so be it.' 'This is not like what happened in West Bengal two decades back, where land was returned after its notification to a particular entity. That sent a wrong signal to investors.' IT layoffs On job losses at some IT firms recently, Mr. Kharge alluded to AI as a cause. 'Whenever a new technology comes in, there is going to be a lot of disruption,' Mr. Kharge said. 'It's always been a constant thing. Jobs are taken, new jobs are created… And I think we have been extremely agile with that. That is the reason we are coming up with the Nipuna Karnataka programme, for heavy reskilling and upskilling. No other State is spending what we are, ₹300-400 crores on such an effort.' On the role of non-Kannadigas in the State's talent pool, Mr. Kharge said: 'My responsibility as minister is to work for a policy that pushes the ecosystem in my State, it's my responsibility to ensure that more of our people are given opportunities. Having said that, because of the great ecosystem that we have, the conducive environment for investments and job creation, we do get a lot of influx of migrants. There's nothing we can do about it — the only way to ensure that we stay ahead of the curve is by reskilling and upskilling people.' 'So the migration influx issue is one of the things we've requested the Sixteenth Finance Commission to consider: give us money, we build better infrastructure, we create more jobs for people across not only Karnataka, but for people across India.'
