New gold mining boost in Kelantan's central gold belt

New Straits Times20 hours ago

KUALA LUMPUR: Niche Capital Emas Holdings Bhd (NICE) is set to expand its presence in Kelantan's gold belt through a new mining venture.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, NICE said it will carry out mining development and operations on a 97.12-hectare site within the 3,255-hectare Sejana project in Mukim Lubok Bongor.
The project will be undertaken by its subsidiary, Niche Capital Mining (Sejana) Sdn Bhd, under a joint venture (JV) with Enrich Mining Sdn Bhd (EMSB). The JV has an initial term of five years and builds on a memorandum of understanding previously signed between the two companies.
NICE said the partnership marks a significant step in strengthening its long-term growth strategy and expanding its gold mining portfolio in Kelantan.
The designated mining site, known as KK Hill, has been independently assessed by a consulting firm.
The site holds a Joint Ore Resources Committee (JORC) Code (2012) compliant mineral resource estimate of about 7.64 million tonnes of ore, with an average gold grade of 0.69 grams per tonne, equivalent to roughly 169,300 troy ounces of gold.
The estimate, which factors in recovery processes, pit optimisation, dilution, and pit slope angles at a gold price of US$2,284 per ounce, confirms the site's significant resource base.
As of June 2025, the market price of gold is about US$3,300 per troy ounce.
According to NICE, both the KK Hill and the Sokor Gold mine are strategically located within the central gold belt, Malaysia's most prominent gold-bearing geological zone, which stretches across the east coast states, including Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang.
This belt is widely recognised as a region rich in gold mineralisation and remains the primary focus of commercial gold mining activities in the country.
NICE added that the deposit remains open in all directions and at depth, offering strong potential for future resource upgrades through continued exploration work.
At midday, NICE's share price slipped 4.55 per cent, dropping half a sen to 10.5 sen, with around 3 million shares traded.

PM Anwar's first working visit to Italy from July 1-3

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to undertake a three-day working visit to Italy, his first to the country, according to a statement from Wisma Putra. The statement said that the visit, from July 1 to 3, is at the invitation of his counterpart, Giorgia Meloni. He will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. According to Wisma Putra, during the visit, the Prime Minister is slated to hold a bilateral meeting with Meloni at the Chigi Palace in Rome on July 3. 'This meeting provides an opportunity for both leaders to assess the progress of Malaysia-Italy relations and explore new cooperation opportunities, especially in the fields of economy, defence technology, and energy,' the statement read. Both parties will also exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest, including the ASEAN-Italy Development Partner Relations, ASEAN-European Union Dialogue Relations, and the situation in the Middle East. 'The Prime Minister will also outline Malaysia's priorities during its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 and ASEAN's efforts in addressing regional and global challenges,' it added. Wisma Putra informed that the Prime Minister is also scheduled to officiate the 'Malaysia-Italy Economic Partnership Roundtable,' which will be attended by Malaysian and Italian industry leaders to discuss cooperation opportunities in bilateral investment and trade on July 2. Additionally, Anwar is slated to attend a meeting with Muslim community leaders in Italy and a get-together with the Malaysian diaspora. The long-standing bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Italy is strong and mutually beneficial, supported by continuous growth in trade and investment, as well as people-to-people connectivity. Last year, total trade between Malaysia and Italy recorded a two percent increase to RM14.61 billion (US$3.18 billion) compared to 2023. For the period of January to May this year, total trade continued to show positive performance with a 3.3 percent increase to RM6.50 billion (US$1.48 billion) compared to the same period in 2024. Italy is Malaysia's fifth-largest trading partner among European Union countries and the third-largest importer of Malaysian palm oil from the bloc for 2024. After concluding his visit to Italy, the Prime Minister is expected to depart for France for a two-day official visit starting July 3.

Factory activity decline eases after trade truce

Tariff ceasefire: Workers at a plastics factory in Shenzhen. For all the attention on Trump's pledge to bring mass manufacturing back to American shores, China's factories are finding ways to remain central to the global supply chain. — Bloomberg BEIJING: China's factory activity improved for a second month but remained in contraction, as trade rebounded after the ceasefire in the tariff war with the United States, while weak domestic demand weighed on the economy. The official manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) was 49.7 in June, versus 49.5 in the previous month, slightly exceeding the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of analysts. A reading below 50 indicates contraction. The non-manufacturing measure of activity in construction and services rose to 50.5 from 50.3 last month, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said yesterday. That compared with a forecast of 50.3. The offshore yuan extended its gain after the data release and was 0.2% stronger at 7.1626 per US dollar. Futures on 30-year government bonds fell as much as 0.6%, the most in a month, as traders dialled back bets on further monetary easing. For manufacturing, the new orders index expanded for the first time in three months, though a gauge of employment worsened again after a slight improvement in May. Among the 21 industries surveyed, more than half were in expansion territory, according to the statistics service. 'Manufacturing production activities accelerated and market demand improved,' Zhao Qinghe, a senior NBS statistician, said in a statement. The PMI figures are the first official data available each month to provide a snapshot of the Chinese economy. The latest reading captured the first full month after Beijing and Washington agreed to a 90-day truce in their trade war. Overseas demand, which made up almost 40% of economic growth in the first quarter, is helping compensate for sluggish spending by consumers at home. But it also makes China more reliant on maintaining stable ties with trade partners such as the United States, with whom Beijing just finalised a trade framework negotiated in Geneva. The pact codified the terms laid out in trade talks between the United States and China, including a commitment from Beijing to deliver rare earths used in everything from wind turbines to jet planes. The strength of Chinese manufacturing in the rest of the year remains in question given an uncertain export outlook, with a more lasting trade deal still elusive. Several global banks, including Bank of America Corp and Citigroup Inc, recently raised forecasts for China's growth in 2025 as the tariff truce improves confidence. Even so, economists surveyed by Bloomberg expect gross domestic product to expand 4.5% this year, significantly below the official target of around 5%. With the manufacturing output index hitting a three-month high of 51, industrial production in June 'won't be too bad', said Raymond Yeung, chief economist for Greater China at Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. 'The question for policymakers is deflation and joblessness instead of growth,' he said. 'I am not worried about China's gross domestic product.' President Donald Trump's China envoy, David Perdue, recently warned the United States wanted to revamp its trading relationship with China and the world by bringing many critical supply chains back onshore. The US ambassador said American leaders had been 'blind to the hollowing out of many US strategic industries', a sign that trade tensions between the two nations could persist. — Bloomberg
