Prime Minister Modi gifted traditional handcrafted items to the President of Ghana and his spouse, showcasing India's rich artisanal heritage.
During his landmark visit to Ghana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a pair of handcrafted Bidriware to Ghanaian President John Mahama vases to mark his address to the country's Parliament, the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister in three decades.
The vases, gifted as a token of friendship and cultural heritage, were crafted by artisans from Bidar, Karnataka. Known for their iconic black finish and fine silver inlay, Bidriware pieces are made using a centuries-old technique involving a zinc-copper alloy and a unique oxidation process. The flower vases feature delicate floral engravings symbolising prosperity and harmony and a reflection of the growing India-Ghana partnership.
As a token of cultural goodwill, PM Modi also gifted a handcrafted Silver Filigree Work Purse from Cuttack, Odisha, to the Ghanaian First Lady Lordina Mahama. The purse showcases Odisha's centuries-old Tarakasi tradition — an intricate silver filigree craft perfected over 500 years. Made with fine silver wires shaped into delicate floral and vine motifs, the accessory blends heritage artistry with modern elegance. Traditionally seen in jewellery, this refined technique now adorns contemporary pieces like purses, making it both a statement of style and a symbol of India's rich artisanal legacy.
In his speech, Modi described the India-Ghana relationship as one rooted in shared struggles and democratic values. 'The histories of India and Ghana bear the scars of colonial rule, but our spirits have always remained free and fearless," he said, drawing applause from lawmakers.
He added, 'May I say, our friendship is sweeter than your famous sugarloaf pineapple."
PM Modi also praised Ghana's democratic journey, calling it a 'beacon of inspiration" for Africa. He pointed to India's own political diversity — with 2,500 political parties and 22 official languages — to underline the strength of pluralism. 'Even in Ghana, [Indians] have blended into society, just like sugar into tea," he said.
PM Modi noted that he and President Mahama had agreed to elevate ties to a comprehensive partnership, signaling a stronger political and economic relationship with West Africa's fastest-growing economy.
'When we look at Ghana, we see a nation that shines with courage, that rises above history, that meets every challenge with dignity and grace. Your commitment to democratic ideals and inclusive progress truly made Ghana a beacon of inspiration for the entire African continent," the Prime Minister said.
Praising the African country, PM Modi said, 'Ghana is known as the land of gold, not just for what lies under your soil but as much for the warmth and strength in your heart."
