Justin continues strong run at Macau Open
The world No. 45 Malaysian extended his head-to-head record against world No. 31 Ayush to 3-2.
It marks only the third time Justin has reached the last eight of a World Tour Super 300 or higher event, having previously made it this far at the Taiwan Open in 2023 and 2024.
The 21-year-old will next face either Thailand's former world championship bronze medallist Kantaphon Wangcharoen or Singapore's Jason Teh, with his sights firmly set on a breakthrough semi-final appearance.
There was also cheer in the mixed doubles where professional pair Jimmy Wong-Lai Pei Jing pulled off an upset against world No. 18 Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto of India.
Making their World Tour debut as a pair, Jimmy-Pei Jing recovered from a game down to prevail 19-21, 21-13, 21-18 and advance to the last eight. They will next take on second seeds Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi of China.
Jimmy-Pei Jing, who first joined forces in March, have reached three finals on the satellite circuit — the Vietnam International Challenge, Thailand International Series and St Denis Reunion Open — and will be eyeing a career-best outing in Macau.
For Pei Jing, Macau holds fond memories — she was a semi-finalist at the same tournament in 2016 with her now-retired partner Tan Kian Meng.
She will also be hoping for another strong result before heading to Paris later this month, where she will serve as a sparring partner to the French national team in preparation for the World Championships from Aug 25–31.

The world No 45 did not have it easy against his 47th ranked rival Tharun Mannepalli, taking 80 minutes to win 19-21, 21-16, 21-16. Justin, 21, who is having a fine run in the Super 300 tournament, will meet the winner of the match between Indonesia's Farhan Alwai and Lakshya Sen of India in tomorrow's final. Both players are ranked much higher than Justin in the world standings. This is Justin's best performance since he started his badminton career in 2017. The Macau Open offers total prize money of US$370,000 (RM1.58 million), with the singles champions receiving US$27,750 (RM118,792) and the runners-up US$14,060 (RM60,188). The winners of the doubles events will take home US$29,230 (RM125,128) while the runners-up pocket US$14,060 (RM60,188).

Runner Wan Fazri eyes 40-year-old national record
KUALA LUMPUR: Wan Fazri Wan Zahari aims to break the 40-year-old national men's 800m record by this year. B. Rajkumar set the four-decade-old mark of 1:47.37 at the 1985 Asian Championships in Jakarta. Wan Fazri, who had just completed his degree in sports science at Universiti Malaya, came close to rewriting Rajkumar's record with a personal best of 1:47.64 at the Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea in May. The 23-year-old Kelantan middle distance runner said it would be a dream come true if he breaks one of the oldest national records in athletics. "I came very close to breaking it in the Asian Championships, and the time (1:47.64) was the second fastest ever recorded by a Malaysian in a competition. "I will try to break the national record at the World Athletics Tour in Odisha, India, on Aug 10. "I will be competing against some of the top Asian runners there, and this will help me to clock a good time," he said. At the recent World University Games in Germany, Wan Fazri clocked 1:49.53 in the heats and 1:49.87 in the semi-finals. Wan Fazri, who has been training under Jironi Ridzuan for the last two years, said he couldn't run a good time in Germany due to lack of rest. Eight other national athletes will also compete in Odisha. They are Azeem Fahmi (100m), Danish Iftikhar Roslee (100m), Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam (200m), Sayyid Amin Roslan (200m), Tan Zhi Hang (long jump), Andre Anura Anuar (triple jump), Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli (100m) and Nur Aishah Rofina Aling (100m).
