
New Energy Asia rolls out high-speed EV chargers in Malaysia, eyes ASEAN market
NEW Energy Asia Sdn Bhd, a joint venture (JV) between DRB-HICOM's HICOM Engineering Sdn Bhd (HESB) and China's Hangzhou Flash Charging New Energy Co Ltd (HFC), has launched a portfolio of advanced electric vehicle (EV) chargers and energy storage systems for the Malaysian and ASEAN markets.
The company will distribute a range of EV chargers manufactured by HFC, including the high-performance Lotus-branded 450kW liquid-cooled all-in-one DC charger. The unit can charge the Lotus Emeya from 10% to 80% State of Charge (SOC) in just 14 minutes.
Other offerings include 7kW, 11kW, and 22kW smart AC chargers; 30–240kW air-cooled DC chargers; and 300–450kW liquid-cooled DC chargers, with various models customisable to client needs.
Additionally, the company will supply advanced energy storage systems to support the growing demand for sustainable home and commercial energy solutions.
'Following the brand segmentation of Lotus, New Energy Asia will also introduce a sub-brand that will be Powered By Lotus, which will be more price competitive,' it said in a statement.
The new entity was launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Also in attendance were DRB-HICOM Group MD and HESB chairman Tan Sri Syed Faisal Albar, Lotus Group CEO Feng Qingfeng, HICOM Engineering COO Hazrin Fazail Haroon, and New Energy Asia CEO Gordon Lee.
The event also saw the company exchanging Memorandums of Collaboration with key partners to further develop the local EV charger manufacturing ecosystem, together with complementary and supporting offerings that enhance its suite of products.
'As part of its business focus, New Energy Asia will continue to actively engage with key industry players across the entire EV value chain within Malaysia and the ASEAN region to promote accelerated adoption of electric mobility and smart technologies for sustainable transport solutions,' it added.
Exclusive rights in ASEAN
The JV has exclusive rights to distribute the Lotus EV charging equipment across ASEAN. It aims to expand in phases, starting with Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, followed by the rest of the region.
The company highlighted its market entry strategy in response to competition.
'While it is acknowledged that there are many capable players in the market, New Energy Asia believes that there is still room for solutions that are professionally managed, scalable, and designed with long-term growth in mind,' it said.
The company noted that it is entering at a time when the industry is maturing, and is focused on contributing practical, reliable options that can support the ongoing development of the EV ecosystem in Malaysia and ASEAN.
Local manufacturing and ecosystem development
To support Malaysia's energy goals, New Energy Asia intends to localise manufacturing and assembly, contribute to job creation, transfer EV charging technology, and support local small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
It directly supports the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and Malaysia's Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint through infrastructure development, localisation of clean tech, and alignment with circular economy principles.
The company has already deployed AC chargers at Wisma DRB-HICOM and DHAS, with DC chargers installed at PHN Industry Sdn Bhd and a local EV dealership.
All products are CE and CB certified and meet international safety and quality standards. New Energy Asia is also working to obtain local certifications across the ASEAN countries in which it plans to operate.
Key technology and features
Among the core technologies in its chargers are dynamic smart charging systems, mobile app integration, and an integrated remote management platform for real-time diagnostics.
Both liquid-cooled and air-cooled methods used in EV chargers aim to ensure stable operation and protect the charger from overheating, but the choice depends on performance requirements, operating conditions, and cost considerations.
The chargers are compatible with over 90% of EV models worldwide, following extensive testing before market entry.

US tariff revision positive for Malaysian glove manufacturers
KUALA LUMPUR: The United States' revised tariff on Malaysia is seen as a short-term positive for Malaysian glove manufacturers, according to CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd. The firm noted that Malaysia now has the second-lowest tariff among major glove-producing countries, after Vietnam. "We believe this gives Malaysian exporters a relative competitive edge," it said in a research note today. "The letter from the US government indicates that the revised tariffs may be reconsidered if Malaysia removes its tariff and non-tariff barriers, trade policies, and other restrictions." If the 25 per cent tariff is sustained, the firm said purchasing costs for US buyers could increase, potentially dampen buying volumes, and intensify competition in non-US markets. As of 2024, Malaysia holds the largest share of the global glove market with about 45 per cent, followed by China at 28 per cent and Vietnam at 10 per cent. Within CIMB Securities' coverage, Hartalega Holdings Bhd and Kossan Rubber Industries Bhd are the most exposed to the US market, with each deriving roughly 50 per cent of their total sales from the US. By comparison, Top Glove Corp Bhd generates about 24 per cent of its total sales from the US, while Supermax Corp Bhd has more than 20 per cent exposure. "We believe this move further supports the US agenda to boost domestic nitrile glove manufacturing, a critical personal protective equipment (PPE) product. "Currently, only three nitrile glove producers operate in the US, supplying just 0.05 per cent of the country's total demand," it added. Among the glove manufacturers under its coverage, CIMB Securities views Supermax as the key potential beneficiary, given the commencement of its US-based production in the first quarter of 2025 (1Q25). However, the firm expects the US operations to be loss-making initially, with commercial production from three lines expected by the third quarter of 2025 (3Q25). Overall, CIMB Securities has maintained a "Neutral" stance on the rubber glove sector due to ongoing headwinds. These include a challenging operating environment marked by soft demand and elevated costs, following the recent hike in the Sales and Service Tax and minimum wage. Kossan remains the firm's preferred pick in the sector, with a "Buy" call, while it retained "Hold" calls on Top Glove, Hartalega, and Supermax.

It is a tactic to force countries to make deals with the United States until the new Aug 1 deadline is reached. Whether it will be implemented or not is another story. With US President Donald Trump, things change like changing people, and changing clothes. There is no certainty. Remember, those deals cost an arm and a leg for the countries involved. Trump wants full access to the countries' market, while at the same time, not allowing countries access to the US market. Is it worth it? Is it worth bending the knee to 'Emperor' Trump? Typical bullying tactic. On top of that, if countries were to increase their own tariffs, the US tariffs would go even higher. It goes back to the basic question: does the US need the countries more than the countries need the US? How should Malaysia respond? I am not in favour of Malaysia increasing tariffs on its own. Any increase will affect our imports; they will be more expensive. This will hit the rakyat who are already burdened with the high cost of living. However, I am in favour of 'Buy US last'. Malaysia should as much as possible reduce or not buy from US companies. Government procurements, such as military aircraft and equipment, should put US companies last. This should be the unwritten rule. The issue now is Malaysia's exports and not Malaysia's imports. Malaysia simply needs to increase their exports to other countries. More can be done through China, Japan, South Korea, Asean, Brics, the EU, the Middle East nations, Africa, and so on. We have to accept the fact that the US is now an expensive country to trade with. Just look at the Vietnam PM who called up Trump and managed to get a big reduction in tariffs without even having to send a delegation to the US. This is what a good statesperson who loves their country is made of. Cabinet to weigh US tariff impact
PETALING JAYA: The Cabinet will discuss in its meeting today issues and relevant matters relating to the 25% tariff imposed by the United States. Revealing this, Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said Malaysia was not the only country hit with the tariff. 'We have to adjust and be agile on this,' he said after attending the inaugural Malaysian Palm Oil Council Trade Networking Visit dialogue here yesterday, Bernama reported. He said the US' move to impose a higher tariff on Malaysia meant that American importers of Malaysian palm oil products will have to bear the extra cost. He said Malaysia exports palm oil-based products such as oleochemicals to the United States, along with other key commodities including rubber gloves, timber, furniture and cocoa products. Johari said Malaysia's commodity exports to the United States amounted to only RM20bil out of the total annual commodity exports worth RM186bil. He said as there were no alternatives to some of the commodity products exported, it is 'all right' if a tariff is imposed.
