
Takeaways from AP report on company that sold 200,000 carbon credits to remove CO2 from ocean
But outside scientists frustrated by the lack of information released by the company say serious questions remain about whether the technology works as the company describes. Their questions showcase tensions in an industry built on little regulation and big promises .
Here are highlights from The Associated Press' reporting :
Gigablue, founded by a group of entrepreneurs in Israel, was originally named 'Gigaton' after the one billion metric tons of carbon dioxide most scientists say will be necessary to remove from the atmosphere each year to slow global warming.
The company began trials in the South Pacific Ocean last year, and says it will work with country authorities to create a 'sequestration field' — a dedicated part of the ocean where 'pulses' of particles will be released on a seasonal basis.
The company announced earlier this year that it reached a historic milestone: selling 200,000 carbon credits. It's the largest sale to date for a climate startup operating in the ocean, according to the tracking site CDR.fyi, making up more than half of all ocean-based carbon credits sold last year.
Carbon credits, which have grown in popularity over the last decade, are tokens that symbolize the removal of one metric ton of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. On paper, companies that buy credits achieve a smaller carbon footprint without needing to reduce their own emissions — for instance, by paying another vendor to plant trees or capture carbon dioxide from the air .
Only a few countries have required local industries to purchase carbon credits. Most companies that buy them do so voluntarily.
The credits have helped fund a band of startups like Gigablue that are eager to tackle the climate crisis, but they are also unevenly regulated, scientifically complex, and have in some cases been linked to fraud .
Gigablue's 200,000 credits are pledged to SkiesFifty, a newly formed company investing in greener practices for the aviation industry.
Gigablue wouldn't reveal what it earned in the sale, and SkiesFifty's team declined to be interviewed. Most credits are sold for a few hundred dollars each — but a chart on Gigablue's website suggests its prices are lower than almost any other form of carbon capture on the market.
The particles Gigablue has patented are meant to capture carbon in the ocean by floating for a number of days and growing algae, before sinking rapidly to the ocean floor.
Algae has long been attractive to climate scientists because it absorbs carbon dioxide from the surrounding water as it grows. If the algae sinks to the deep sea or ocean floor, Gigablue expects the carbon to be trapped there for hundreds to thousands of years.
The ultimate goal is to lower carbon dioxide levels so drastically that the ocean rebalances with the atmosphere by soaking up more CO2 from the air. It's a feat that would help slow climate change, but one that is still under active study by climate scientists.
While Gigablue has made several commercial deals, it has not yet revealed what its particles are made of. Partly this is because the company says it will build different particles tailored to different seasons and areas of the ocean.
'It's proprietary,' said chief technology officer Sapir Markus-Alford.
Documents provide a window into the possible ingredients. According to information on the permit, Gigablue's first New Zealand trial last year involved releasing particles of pure vermiculite, a porous clay often used in potting soil.
In the second New Zealand trial, the company released particles made of vermiculite, ground rock, a plant-based wax, as well as manganese and iron.
A patent published last year hints the particles could also be made of scores of other materials, including cotton, rice husks or jute, as well as synthetic ingredients like polyester fibers or lint.
The company said it had commissioned an environmental institute to verify that the particles are safe for thousands of organisms, including mussels and oysters.
Several scientists not affiliated with Gigablue interviewed by the AP said they were interested in how a company with so little public information about its technology could secure a deal for 200,000 carbon credits. The success of the company's method, they said, will depend heavily on how much algae grows on the particles, and the amount that sinks to the deep ocean. So far, Gigablue has not released any studies demonstrating those rates.
Thomas Kiørboe, a professor of ocean ecology at the Technical University of Denmark, and Philip Boyd, an oceanographer at the University of Tasmania who studies the role of algae in the Earth's carbon cycle, said they were doubtful algae would get enough sunlight to grow inside the particles.
It's more likely the particles would attract hungry bacteria, Kiørboe said.
The rates at which Gigablue says its particles sink — up to a hundred meters (yards) per hour — might shear off algae from the particles in the quick descent, Boyd said.
It's likely that some particles would also be eaten by fish — limiting the carbon capture, and raising the question of how the particles could impact marine life.
Boyd is eager to see field results showing algae growth, and wants to see proof that Gigablue's particles cause the ocean to absorb more CO2 from the air.
In a statement, Gigablue said that bacteria does consume the particles but the effect is minimal, and its measurements will account for any loss of algae or particles as they sink.
The company noted that a major science institute in New Zealand has given Gigablue its stamp of approval. Gigablue hired the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, a government-owned company, to review several drafts of its methodology.
In a recent letter posted to Gigablue's website, the institute's chief ocean scientist said his staff had confidence the company's work is 'scientifically sound' and the proposed measurements for carbon sequestration were robust.

Israeli quantum startup Qedma just raised $26 million, with IBM joining in
Despite their imposing presence, quantum computers are delicate beasts, and their errors are among the main bottlenecks that the quantum computing community is actively working to address. Failing this, promising applications in finance, drug discovery, and materials science may never become real. That's the reason why Google touted the error correction capacities of its latest quantum computing chip, Willow. And IBM is both working on delivering its own 'fault-tolerant' quantum computer by 2029 and collaborating with partners like Qedma, an Israeli startup in which it also invested, as TechCrunch learned exclusively. While most efforts focus on hardware, Qedma specializes in error mitigation software. Its main piece of software, QESEM, or quantum error suppression and error mitigation, analyzes noise patterns to suppress some classes of errors while the algorithm is running and mitigate others in post-processing. Qedma's co-founder and chief scientific officer, Professor Dorit Aharonov, once described as a member of 'quantum royalty' for her and her father's contributions to the field, said this enables quantum circuits up to 1,000 times larger to run accurately on today's hardware, without waiting for further advancements on error correction at the computer level. IBM itself does both quantum hardware and software, and some of its partners, like French startup Pasqal, also develop their own hardware. But it sees value as well in partnering with companies more narrowly focusing on the software layer, like Qedma and Tiger Global-backed Finnish startup Algorithmiq, its VP of Quantum, Jay Gambetta, told TechCrunch. That's because IBM thinks driving quantum further requires a community effort. 'If we all work together, I do think it's possible that we will get scientific accepted definitions of quantum advantage in the near future, and I hope that we can then turn them into more applied use cases that will grow the industry,' Gambetta said. 'Quantum advantage' usually refers to demonstrating the usefulness of quantum over classical computers. 'But useful is a very subjective term,' Gambetta said. In all likelihood, it will first apply to an academic problem, not a practical one. Boston, MA | REGISTER NOW Still, having a quantum computer execute a program that a classical computer can't simulate with the same accuracy would be an important step for the industry — and Qedma claims it is getting closer. 'It's possible that already within this year, we'll be able to demonstrate with confidence that the quantum advantage is here,' CEO and co-founder Asif Sinay said. With a doctorate in physics, Sinay previously worked as a physicist at Magic Leap, then a multi-billion-worth AR company with a large R&D center in Israel. Like the founders of several Israeli startups, from Metacafe to Wiz, he is also a Talpion — an alum from Israel's elite military program Talpiot, where one of his classmates was Lior Litwak. Litwak is now a managing partner at Israeli VC firm Glilot Capital Partners, which led Qedma's $26 million Series A through its early growth fund, Glilot+, which he heads. The round included participation from existing investors such as TPY Capital, which backed Qedma's $4.7 million seed round in 2020, as well as new investors including Korean Investment Partners — and IBM. Since last September, Qedma has been available through IBM's Qiskit Functions Catalog, which makes quantum more accessible to end users. Sinay noted the synergies between the two companies, but emphasized that Qedma's plans are hardware-agnostic. The startup has already conducted a demo on the Aria computer from IonQ, a publicly listed U.S. company focused on trapped ion quantum computing. In addition, Qedma has an evaluation agreement with an unnamed partner Sinay described as 'the largest company in the market.' An associate professor of theoretical physics and research group lead at Technion, he told TechCrunch he is hoping that some of his former doctorate students — or others they know — will join Qedma as part of the startup's hiring efforts. According to Sinay, Qedma will use the proceeds from its latest funding round to grow its team from around 40 to between 50 and 60 people. Some of these new recruits will be researchers and software engineers, but he said the startup also plans to hire for marketing and sales roles. 'We are selling our software to the end users, and our partners are the hardware manufacturers.' For hardware manufacturers like IBM, this software layer addresses the fact that a quant at a bank or a chemist who could leverage quantum are not experts in how to run circuits in the presence of noise. However, they know their respective domains and the conditions they want to set. 'So you want to be able to write the problem and say, I want it to run with this accuracy, I'm OK with this much usage of a quantum computer, and this much usage of a classical computer,' Gambetta said. 'They want [these] to be essentially little options that they can put into their software; and that's exactly what Qedma is doing, as well as some of [the] other partners we're working with.' Some researchers are already taking advantage of this via Qiskit Functions, or through partnerships that research institutions have established with Qedma and its industry peers. But the debate is still open as to when these experiments will become larger, and when quantum advantage will materialize for the broader world. Qedma hopes to accelerate the timeline by providing a shortcut. Unlike error correction at the computer level, which adds overhead that limits scalability, Qedma's approach doesn't require more quantum bits, or qubits. 'Our claim is that we can get quantum advantage even before a million qubits are achieved,' Lindner said. However, other companies are approaching that issue from different angles. For instance, French startup Alice & Bob raised $104 million earlier this year to develop a fault-tolerant quantum computer whose architecture relies on 'cat qubits,' which are inherently protected against certain errors, reducing the need for more qubits. But Qedma is not dismissive of the race for more qubits; since it acts as a booster either way, its team wants hardware to have as many qubits as possible, and the best qubits possible. In practice, though, it will be hard to maximize both at once, just like software-based error mitigation typically means longer runtimes. The best choice will depend on the specific task — but first, quantum will have to get to those tasks.

Investors choose safe havens, oil over equities as Middle East erupts
By Sinéad Carew and Amanda Cooper NEW YORK/LONDON (Reuters) -U.S. investors on Friday sought refuge in safe-haven assets like the dollar and gold, as oil prices surged after Iran retaliated against Israel's biggest-ever military strike against the major crude producer. Iran launched airstrikes at Israel hours after unprecedented Israeli strikes, stoking some fears of a broader regional conflagration. Explosions were heard on Friday in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, the country's two biggest cities. Earlier, Israel blasted Iran's huge Natanz underground nuclear site and killed its top military commanders. Investors said the markets would probably muddle through the latest hostilities unless Iranian oil facilities were attacked or other countries are drawn into the war. Worries about possible disruptions to oil shipments prompted crude prices to spike as much as 14%. Oil futures settled 7% higher on the day. "We're entering the next phase of the conflict here with the Iranian response," said Jim Baird, chief investment officer at Plante Moran Financial Advisors in Southfield, Michigan. The money manager said he expected "a bit more of a flight-to-quality trade if we see stocks sell off further" and that this could benefit gold and Treasuries. "The question is still how long will this persist? How intense will it be? Will other parties be drawn in? From a big picture economic perspective, I don't think it changes anything materially," he said. Safe-haven gold prices rose more than 1% and Wall Street's three major equity indexes ended down more than 1%. The outbreak of war brought oil prices into focus. Iran is among the world's largest exporters of crude and borders the Strait of Hormuz, a major choke-point for crude tankers through which roughly a fifth of global consumption flows and which Iran has previously threatened to close in retaliation to Western pressure. As oil prices surged and investors sought safe havens, U.S. government bond yields rose on bets that higher energy prices could stoke inflation. Still, despite the spike in crude prices, the global benchmark Brent remained well under $80 a barrel. Irene Tunkel, Chief U.S. Equity Strategist at BCA Research said she does not see long-term U.S. market implications unless prices soar above $100 a barrel, which would hurt consumer spending. She said that was unlikely unless oil infrastructure is destroyed or "Iran somehow closes the Strait of Hormuz and (the conflict) spills out of Iran and energy production in Iraq is shifted." The strategist also noted that the S&P 500 pullback on Friday, followed a strong rally from April lows. U.S. President Donald Trump said there was still time for Iran to halt the Israeli attacks by reaching a deal to curb its nuclear programme. The attacks came at a time when investors were wondering how central banks would handle interest rates if U.S. consumer prices rise due to Trump's tariffs. Jack Janasiewicz, portfolio manager at Natixis Investment Managers in Boston, said the potential for higher inflation from rising oil prices looked "less supportive" for U.S. government bond prices. But he noted that investors typically take geopolitical crises in their stride. "Historically speaking with these kind of geopolitical events, you get the knee-jerk reaction from the market but the longer-term ramifications tend to fade. History tells us to kind of look past a lot of this stuff," said Janasiewicz. OIL PRICE RALLY Janasiewicz said the ultimate gains in oil prices will depend on how long the war lasts and whether U.S. supply could be ramped up to cap prices if there is a supply disruption. "From a U.S. perspective it's at least a little bit more insulated because domestic producers could certainly ramp up" production, Janasiewicz said. The dollar index, which has recently borne the brunt of investor risk aversion, again took up the mantle of safe haven on Friday and was last up about 0.5%. "The dollar is reverting to that traditional role of safe haven, which we haven't seen for months," City Index strategist Fiona Cincotta said. Despite Wall Street's sell-off, stock prices were still not far off record highs, and some investors had warned that market participants may not be cautious enough. Marlborough fixed income fund manager James Athey said there was a risk investors dive back into riskier assets too quickly if tensions do not ratchet up quickly from here. "In general, markets tend to look through these sorts of events quite quickly but of course therein lies the risk of complacency," he said. "The situation is genuinely tense and fraught and risk assets are still priced for perfection," he said. Global shares decline as tensions simmer in the Middle East
Global shares retreated on Thursday as worries persisted about conflict in the Middle East. On the seventh day of a conflict that began with a surprise wave of Israeli airstrikes targeting military sites, senior officers and nuclear scientists, Iranian state media reported that Iran's foreign minister planned to meet his European counterparts in Geneva. Meanwhile, Israel carried out strikes on Iran's Arak heavy water reactor, in its latest attack on Iran's sprawling nuclear programme. The escalating warfare has shaken financial markets. France's CAC 40 slipped 0.8% in early trading to 7,593.06. In Germany, the DAX fell 0.9% to 23,141.82. Britain's FTSE 100 lost 0.5% to 8,797.24. The futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average were 0.4% lower. The Federal Reserve opted on Wednesday to keep its key interest rate unchanged, while its policymakers signalled that they still expect to cut rates twice this year. They project that US president Donald Trump's higher import duties will fuel inflation. They also expect growth to slow and unemployment to edge higher. The Bank of England likewise kept its key interest rate unchanged at 4.25% at its meeting on Thursday, after cutting it twice this year. Switzerland's central bank cut its target interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to zero on Thursday, saying that inflationary pressures have eased. It is among many central banks opting to go ahead and ease the cost of borrowing as uncertainty over Mr Trump's tariffs and geopolitical crises threaten global growth. In Asian trading, Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 shed 1.0% to finish at 38,488.34. Shares in Japan's Nippon Steel Corp jumped 2.3% after it announced that its acquisition of US Steel, which met US government opposition for more than a year, was finally completed. Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 2.0% to 23,237.74 on heavy selling of tech-related shares, while the Shanghai Composite lost 0.8% to 3,362.11. US financial markets were closed on Thursday for the Juneteenth holiday, an annual federal holiday in the US. So far, US inflation has remained relatively tame, and it is near the Fed's target of 2%. But economists have been warning it may take months to feel the effects of tariffs. And inflation has been feeling upwards pressure recently from a spurt in oil prices because ofIsrael's fighting with Iran. Fed officials are waiting to see how big Mr Trump's tariffs will ultimately be, what they will affect and whether they will drive a one-time increase to inflation or something more dangerous. There is also still deep uncertainty about how much tariffs will grind down on the economy's growth. 'Because the economy is still solid, we can take the time to actually see what's going to happen,' Fed chair Jerome Powell said. 'We'll make smarter and better decisions if we just wait a couple months or however long it takes to get a sense of really what is going to be the passthrough of inflation and what are going to be the effects on spending and hiring and all those things,' he said. In other dealings early on Thursday, benchmark US crude rose 13 cents to 73.63 US dollars. Brent crude, the international standard, advanced 7 cents to 76.77 dollars a barrel. Oil prices have been yo-yoing as fears rise and ebb that the conflict between Israel and Iran could disrupt the global flow of crude. Iran is a major producer of oil and also sits on the narrow Strait of Hormuz, through which much of the world's crude passes.
