Horsham steward praises volunteers after club's title win
Dave Ward, 50, has been volunteering in the role for three years and watched on in delight as Dominic Di Paola's side beat Hashtag United 5-1 to claim The Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division title for the first time in their history, pipping Billericay on goal difference by a solitary strike.
The result means the Hornets will take their place in the National League South next season after Lucas Rodrigues' brace and goals from Ola Ogunwamide, Harvey Sparks and Jake Elliott were enough to top the division, despite Billericay's 4-2 win over Cheshunt.
Ward said: 'It was one of those worthwhile moments where everything came together, it was a fantastic day for the club and it was great to be there.
'I do not think any of us actually thought we were going to do it because we all thought Billericay were going to win quite comfortably.
'There were murmurs in the crowd they were 2-0 down and then at the end of the game when we found out [Billericay had not scored enough], people began to cheer in the crowd and then everyone went absolutely mad.
'It was a complete joy for the club, and it was an unbelievable moment.
Ward, who moved to Horsham five years ago and works in the club's carpark, also praised the incredible impact of the club's army of volunteers.
He explained that since his time at the club, he has seen the number of volunteers working with him grow from two to five, while crowds have risen from approximately 600 to being routinely four figures.
'I think the people who give up their time to be here are incredible,' continued Ward, whose day job is as a driver.
'I did not realise when I first started how much people put in, week in, week out, it really is a labour of love.
'The club would not be able to afford to pay offsite people to do what we do.
'We all do it for the love of the club, the friendships and the family feel. It is fantastic what everyone does.
'I would not want to be paid to do what I do if I am being honest. The club brings the whole town together and the celebrations last Saturday showed that.'

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson on Danny Ward's return
The Wales international, 32, was a free agent after leaving Leicester City, who were relegated from the Premier League last term and will come up against the Reds in 2025-26, and has signed a two-year deal at his home-town club. A product of the Racecourse academy, Ward played once for the Reds in a Welsh Cup tie before joining Liverpool in January 2012 for a fee of around £100,000. Successful loan spells at Aberdeen and Huddersfield followed before Ward completed a move to Leicester for around £12.5 million in July 2018 having made three appearance during his time at Anfield. "It is a strong addition to the group. "It is important to get the goalkeeper department strong, it is a vital component of any team. "We wanted to get that department as strong as we possibly could going into a new division and the season ahead." First choice keeper Okonkwo kept 19 clean sheets in League One last season as Wrexham secured an historic third successive promotion while Burton also impressed when he got his chance when the ex-Arsenal man suffered a broken wrist but then sustained an injury of his own. "We were pleased with Callum, he did well until he got his injury, while Arthur speaks for himself. He's been a fantastic signing," added Parkinson, who decided to release veteran stopper Mark Howard as well as Brad Foster and Liam Hall at the end of last season. "But Danny coming in offers great experience and he's played at higher levels so it's a great fit for us." Despite only making 52 appearances in all competitions in seven seasons with Leicester, Ward has gone on to win 44 caps for his country. He was part of the Wales squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016, and also made appearances at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup. Parkinson says that Ward hasn't just come to sit on the bench at Wrexham and is determined to get in the side. "Absolutely," he added. "It's a key balance for goalkeepers where they work together but there's also that competition for places - we are striving to get that in all positions. Goalkeeper Danny Ward looking forward to Wrexham challenge
The goalkeeper, 32, has re-joined his home-town club on a contract until the end of the 2026-27 season after leaving Leicester City who will come up against the Reds in the Championship next term following the Foxes relegation from the Premier League. A product of the academy at The Racecourse, Welsh international Ward made the switch to Liverpool in January 2012 for a fee of around £100,000 having made one competitive appearance for Wrexham when he started the 2-1 Welsh Cup third round defeat at home to Airbus on December 3 2011. Ward was released by Leicester, where he made 29 league appearances in seven seasons, at the end of the 2024-25 campaign and he jumped at the chance to move back to the club where he began his career. "Exciting times," said Ward. "It was slightly strange driving in to the ground (to sign) but an amazing feeling. "I have had a busy summer. I went away and got married, I have had the international break and while I was away, I learned of the interest from Wrexham. "The club means a lot to me. Even before I signed as an academy player and my time at Colliers Park, I used to get on the train from Hawarden to come and watch games just after we'd been relegated from the league. "And then to be part of the club and come through the system, and have an insight into what it takes to be a professional, the grounding it gave me at an early age making my way in the game was unbelievable. "It is something that set me on my way and I will forever be grateful for that, and hopefully now I can repay that a little bit."
