Queensland Premier David Crisafulli to announce commission of inquiry into state CFMEU
The announcement follows a damning report written by lawyer Geoffrey Watson SC alleged the union used violence to "support a pursuit of political, industrial, and financial power".
The report, commissioned by Queensland CFMEU administrator Mark Irving KC, was compiled from nearly 60 interviews conducted by Mr Watson.
A commission of inquiry can compel witnesses to give evidence, and charges can be recommended when it is completed.
Premier David Crisafulli said it was the "most powerful inquiry" the state could launch.
"If this report only scratched the surface we owe it to Queenslanders to get the full picture with a commission of inquiry," he said.

And while he's totalled at least $15,000 worth of sanctions this year alone, Lyon was resolute that Reid's act was worthy of a ban, and that more fines wouldn't deter him. 'I can't fathom what the purpose is for fining a man for an act that, had he done it on the first occasion, I would've suspended him for, let alone the sixth,' Lyon began on Fox Footy's AFL 360. 'That, Gerard, I'm sorry — and I've defended Harley across the journey — that is a suspension every day of the week. 'And if you condone this in the manner of just giving him a fine, money's not going to be a problem for Harley Reid. 'The past playing cohort that are in the media now will all agree on that — that's the leg-breaker. That's a kick, Gerard. 'I'm not being overdramatic. You know I've been a defender of Harley ... but that's not a fine, Gerard, let alone the sixth time he's been fined this year. 'That is a suspension for Harley Reid every single day, and if you don't suspend that, you leave the door open for lots of terrible incidents. That's failed the game, that. That's a failure.' Respected Fox Footy commentator Gerard Whateley added: 'If we are searching for the dangerous trip, that was every bit of it.' On how the former No.1 draft pick has handled feedback about his missteps, McQualter added: 'He's certainly responsive to it (constructive feedback), he understands that he wants to win and compete, but he has to get his balance right. '(It's) part of his learning process he's going through, and I've got no doubt he'll continue to improve and get better at it.'

Man killed after helicopter collides with bird in remote Northern Territory
A helicopter passenger has died in a freak accident after a bird crashed into him mid-air, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in remote northeast Arnhem Land. Northern Territory Police said the aircraft was flying near the community of Gapuwiyak about 2pm on Monday when it struck a bird mid-air. In a statement, police said the impact caused the bird to 'fatally strike a 54-year-old male passenger'. The pilot managed to land the helicopter safely at the Lake Evella airstrip and was uninjured. Emergency services responded to the scene, but the passenger was declared dead. A report will be prepared for the coroner and NT WorkSafe and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have been notified and are investigating. Gapuwiyak is located on the shore of Lake Evella, about 500 kilometres east of Darwin. It is one of the Northern Territory's easternmost and most remote settlements.
