US strikes set back Iran nuclear programme by up to two years, Pentagon says
'We have degraded their programme by one to two years at least. Intel [intelligence] assessments inside the [Defence] Department assess that,' Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told journalists, later adding: 'We're thinking probably closer to two years.'
American B-2 bombers hit two Iranian nuclear sites with GBU-57 bunker-buster bombs last month, while a guided missile submarine struck a third site with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Israel launched an unprecedented air campaign on Iranian nuclear sites, scientists and top military commanders on June 13 in a bid to end the country's nuclear programme, which Tehran says is for civilian purposes but Washington and other powers insist is aimed at acquiring atomic weapons.
US President Donald Trump spent weeks pursuing a diplomatic path to replace the nuclear deal between world powers and Tehran, which he tore up during his first term in 2018, but he ultimately decided to take military action.

A Hamas security official told Al Jazeera Arabic that Israel is trying to create issues that will lead to the destabilisation of the Gaza Strip, Al Jazeera Arabic reported on Thursday. The official said Hamas had prevented attempts by Israel to smuggle spy equipment and new phones to collaborators in the Gaza Strip. The official also said agents had been smuggling large quantities of drugs from Israeli intelligence officers assigned to the aid teams managing the aid distribution points. The official said the drugs were being brought in and used to 'ensnare young people, bring them down, and assign them to security and espionage missions'. Palestinian woman released from ICE custody after lengthy detention
A Palestinian woman was released from custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after the US government tried for the second time to deport her despite a federal court ruling prohibiting her removal. Ward Sakeik, 22, was detained in February by ICE on her way home from her honeymoon in the US Virgin Islands. Her husband is a US citizen. Sakeik was released on Tuesday, according to a statement shared by her legal team. She was held by US immigration authorities for five months. 'Today marks a powerful step forward for Ward, who has been released from immigration detention and reunited with her spouse, Taahir, after 141 days,' Maria Kari, a lawyer on Sakeik's legal team, said in a statement. 'Ward's case is one of too many that are emblematic of this administration's cruelty-based immigration enforcement system,' she added. An officer told Sakeik that she was being deported, but then she was not. Sakeik was first threatened with deportation on 12 June when ICE agents brought her to the tarmac at Fort Worth Alliance Airport and told her they were deporting her to 'the border of Israel.' A US federal judge had previously ordered that Sakeik could not be deported. Sakeik was born in Saudi Arabia to parents from the Gaza Strip. She is legally stateless - Saudi Arabia does not grant birthright citizenship - and has lived in the US since she was eight years old. She and her family came to the US on a tourist visa when she was eight and applied for asylum. Although they were denied and faced deportation orders, she was allowed to remain in the US under an "order of supervision", which granted her a work permit and said she had to regularly check in with federal immigration authorities. Sakeik married a US citizen in January 2025 and filed a green card application in February. The first stage of the application was approved. The Department of Homeland Security claimed Sakeik was flagged by ICE because she 'chose to fly over international waters and outside the US customs zone'. The Virgin Islands are a US territory. 'Let's be clear: Ward was arrested and almost deported simply because she is Palestinian and ICE thought they could get away with it,' Chris Godshall-Bennett, another lawyer representing Sakeik, said.
