US strikes set back Iran nuclear programme by up to two years, Pentagon says

The Nationala day ago
US intelligence assessments indicate that strikes on Iranian nuclear sites set the country's atomic programme back by up to two years, the Pentagon said on Wednesday.
'We have degraded their programme by one to two years at least. Intel [intelligence] assessments inside the [Defence] Department assess that,' Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told journalists, later adding: 'We're thinking probably closer to two years.'
American B-2 bombers hit two Iranian nuclear sites with GBU-57 bunker-buster bombs last month, while a guided missile submarine struck a third site with Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Israel launched an unprecedented air campaign on Iranian nuclear sites, scientists and top military commanders on June 13 in a bid to end the country's nuclear programme, which Tehran says is for civilian purposes but Washington and other powers insist is aimed at acquiring atomic weapons.
US President Donald Trump spent weeks pursuing a diplomatic path to replace the nuclear deal between world powers and Tehran, which he tore up during his first term in 2018, but he ultimately decided to take military action.

Zarah Sultana quits Labour to start new party with Jeremy Corbyn

Zarah Sultana has resigned from the UK's Labour Party after 14 years to lead a new party with former Labour leader and independent MP Jeremy Corbyn. "Today, after 14 years, I'm resigning from the Labour Party," she said in a statement on Thursday evening local time. "Jeremy Corbyn and I will co-lead the founding of a new party, with other Independent MPs, campaigners and activists across the country." Sultana cited the Starmer government's support for Israel's war on Gaza as a reason for leaving, saying that "this government is an active participant in genocide. And the British people oppose it." The MP has been a particularly vocal critic of the Labour government's continued political, economic and military ties with Israel. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters She accused the political establishment of smearing "people of conscience trying to stop a genocide in Gaza as terrorists", an apparent reference to parliament this week voting to proscribe direct action group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation, a move she strongly opposed. 'Socialism or barbarism' "We are not going to take this anymore. We're not an island of strangers; we're an island that's suffering," Sultana said. She added that at the next general election, "the choice will be stark: socialism or barbarism. "Billionaires already have three parties fighting for them. It's time the rest of us had one." Corbyn presents inquiry bill as UK spy planes continue flights over Gaza Read More » The MP said: "Westminster is broken, but the real crisis is deeper. Just 50 families now own more wealth than half the UK population." "A year ago, I was suspended by the Labour Party for voting to abolish the two-child benefit cap and lift 400,000 children out of poverty. I'd do it again. "I voted against scrapping winter fuel payments for pensioners. I'd do it again." The confirmation that a new party will be established, co-led by Sultana and Corbyn, marks a significant moment in British politics. It is unclear when the party will be officially launched. There is speculation that it could have a dozen MPs - including some defectors from Labour - which would make it a significant and prominent parliamentary grouping, and a serious headache for the Starmer government.

Hamas security official accuses Israel of smuggling drugs and espionage equipment into strip

A Hamas security official told Al Jazeera Arabic that Israel is trying to create issues that will lead to the destabilisation of the Gaza Strip, Al Jazeera Arabic reported on Thursday. The official said Hamas had prevented attempts by Israel to smuggle spy equipment and new phones to collaborators in the Gaza Strip. The official also said agents had been smuggling large quantities of drugs from Israeli intelligence officers assigned to the aid teams managing the aid distribution points. The official said the drugs were being brought in and used to 'ensnare young people, bring them down, and assign them to security and espionage missions'. Middle East Eye reported on 27 June how opioids were reported to be found in flour bags distributed by the US and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Fund.

Palestinian woman released from ICE custody after lengthy detention

A Palestinian woman was released from custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after the US government tried for the second time to deport her despite a federal court ruling prohibiting her removal. Ward Sakeik, 22, was detained in February by ICE on her way home from her honeymoon in the US Virgin Islands. Her husband is a US citizen. Sakeik was released on Tuesday, according to a statement shared by her legal team. She was held by US immigration authorities for five months. 'Today marks a powerful step forward for Ward, who has been released from immigration detention and reunited with her spouse, Taahir, after 141 days,' Maria Kari, a lawyer on Sakeik's legal team, said in a statement. 'Ward's case is one of too many that are emblematic of this administration's cruelty-based immigration enforcement system,' she added. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters The day before she was released, on Monday, Sakeik was awoken by guards and told that she was going to be removed from the detention facility in Texas, where she was being held. An officer told Sakeik that she was being deported, but then she was not. Sakeik was first threatened with deportation on 12 June when ICE agents brought her to the tarmac at Fort Worth Alliance Airport and told her they were deporting her to 'the border of Israel.' A US federal judge had previously ordered that Sakeik could not be deported. Sakeik was born in Saudi Arabia to parents from the Gaza Strip. She is legally stateless - Saudi Arabia does not grant birthright citizenship - and has lived in the US since she was eight years old. She and her family came to the US on a tourist visa when she was eight and applied for asylum. Although they were denied and faced deportation orders, she was allowed to remain in the US under an "order of supervision", which granted her a work permit and said she had to regularly check in with federal immigration authorities. Sakeik married a US citizen in January 2025 and filed a green card application in February. The first stage of the application was approved. The Department of Homeland Security claimed Sakeik was flagged by ICE because she 'chose to fly over international waters and outside the US customs zone'. The Virgin Islands are a US territory. 'Let's be clear: Ward was arrested and almost deported simply because she is Palestinian and ICE thought they could get away with it,' Chris Godshall-Bennett, another lawyer representing Sakeik, said.
