Weak Demand and Ample Supplies Sink Sugar Prices

Yahoo19 hours ago
October NY world sugar #11 (SBV25) on Tuesday closed down -0.50 (-3.09%), and August London ICE white sugar #5 (SWQ25) closed down -10.20 (-2.16%).
Sugar prices on Tuesday sold off sharply, with NY Oct sugar falling to a new contract low and London sugar dropping to a 1-1/2 week low. Signs of weak demand amid expectations of larger sugar supplies are weighing on prices. 45,112 MT of NY sugar was delivered to settle the July sugar contract that expired on Monday, the smallest amount delivered for a July contract in 11 years, a sign of weak demand. On Monday, nearest-futures (SBN25) NY sugar posted a 4-1/4 year nearest-futures low.

Expectations of larger sugar supplies are limiting the upside in sugar prices. On Monday, commodities trader Czarnikow projected a 7.5 MMT global sugar surplus for the 2025/26 season, the largest surplus in 8 years.
Sugar prices have plummeted over the past three months due to expectations of a global sugar surplus. On May 22, the USDA, in its biannual report, projected that global 2025/26 sugar production would increase by +4.7% y/y to a record 189.318 million metric tons (MMT), with global sugar ending stocks at 41.188 MMT, up 7.5% year-over-year.
The outlook for higher sugar production in India, the world's second-largest producer, is bearish for prices. On June 2, India's National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories projected that India's 2025/26 sugar production would climb +19% y/y to 35 MMT, citing larger planted cane acreage. The outlook for abundant rainfall in India could lead to a bumper sugar crop, which is bearish for prices. On April 15, India's Ministry of Earth Sciences projected an above-normal monsoon this year, with total rainfall forecast to be 105% of the long-term average. India's monsoon season runs from June through September.
Signs of larger global sugar output are negative for prices. On May 22, the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) predicted that Brazil's 2025/26 sugar production would rise +2.3% y/y to a record 44.7 MMT. Also, India's 2025/26 sugar production is projected to rise +25% y/y to 35.3 MMT, citing favorable monsoon rains and increased sugar acreage. In addition, Thailand's 2025/26 sugar production is expected to climb +2% y/y to 10.3 MMT.
In a bearish factor, the Indian government said on January 20 that it would allow its sugar mills to export 1 MMT of sugar this season, easing the restrictions placed on sugar exports in 2023. India has restricted sugar exports since October 2023 to maintain adequate domestic supplies. India allowed mills to export only 6.1 MMT of sugar during the 2022/23 season to September 30, after allowing exports of a record 11.1 MMT in the previous season. However, the ISMA projects that India's 2024/25 sugar production will fall -17.5% y/y to a 5-year low of 26.2 MMT. Also, the ISMA reported last Monday that India's sugar production from Oct 1-May 15 was 25.74 MMT, down -17% from the same period last year. In addition, Indian Food Secretary Chopra said on May 1 that India's 2024/25 sugar exports may only total 800,000 MT, below earlier expectations of 1 MMT.
The outlook for higher sugar production in Thailand is bearish for sugar prices. On May 2, Thailand's Office of the Cane and Sugar Board reported that Thailand's 2024/25 sugar production rose +14% y/y to 10.00 MMT. Thailand is the world's third-largest sugar producer and the second-largest exporter of sugar.
Sugar prices have some support from reduced sugar production in Brazil. Unica reported Monday that the cumulative 2025/26 Brazil Center-South sugar output through mid-June is down by -14.6% y/y to 9.404 MMT. Last month, Conab, Brazil's government crop forecasting agency, said 2024/25 Brazil sugar production fell by -3.4% y/y to 44.118 MMT, citing lower sugarcane yields due to drought and excessive heat.
The International Sugar Organization (ISO) raised its 2024/25 global sugar deficit forecast to a 9-year high of -5.47 MMT on May 15, up from a February forecast of -4.88 MMT. This indicates a tightening market following the 2023/24 global sugar surplus of 1.31 MMT. ISO also cut its 2024/25 global sugar production forecast to 174.8 MMT from a February forecast of 175.5 MMT.
The USDA, in its bi-annual report released May 22, projected that global 2025/26 sugar production would climb +4.7% y/y to a record 189.318 MMT and that global 2025/26 human sugar consumption would increase +1.4% y/y to a record 177.921 MMT. The USDA also forecasted that 2025/26 global sugar ending stocks would climb +7.5% y/y to 41.188 MMT.

MongoDB Doubles Down on India's Database Boom

"Our focus remains on startups, late-stage digital-native businesses and enterprises. We'll continue working closely with customers to solve their data challenges," says Sachin Chawla, Vice President, India and ASEAN, MongoDB Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media. "India is very important for us as a market. We have almost 700 employees here. We also have an engineering team now in India, which is part of the overall MongoDB strategy," says Sachin Chawla, Vice President, India and ASEAN, MongoDB. MongoDB's customer base in India spans early-stage startups such as RFPIO, high-growth unicorns like Zepto and Zomato, large financial institutions such as Canara HSBC Life Insurance, digital platforms like SonyLIV, and Indian ISVs including and Darwinbox. According to Grand View Research, the Indian database management system (DBMS) market generated USD 2.5 billion in revenue in 2024 and is expected to reach USD 7.5 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.8 per cent. Interestingly, China's DBMS market stood at USD 8.7 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 19.8 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 14.6 per cent from 2025 to 2030. Moving beyond legacy systems Chawla says MongoDB is helping Indian enterprises move beyond legacy systems through two distinct approaches. "The first one is when customers decide to build a completely new modern application, gradually sunsetting the old legacy application," he explains. "We work closely with them to build these modern systems." He gives the example of Tata Neu, a loyalty app that integrates over 40 Tata brands, including Taj Hotels and Tata Croma, into a single digital platform. "That entire application is built on MongoDB," he says. "The second approach is application modernisation," Chawla adds. "Here, companies want to retain their existing application but upgrade it. Over the last two years, we've developed a methodology using AI tools and our expertise to modernise the full stack, not just the database." Tackling myths around modern databases Despite this fast-paced growth, Chawla points out several lingering myths in India. "A lot of customers still haven't realised that if you want to build a modern application especially one that's AI-driven you can't build it on a relational structure," he explains. "Most of the data today is unstructured and messy. So you need a database that can scale, can handle different types of data, and support modern workloads." Another misconception Chawla observes is the belief that each use case requires a purpose-built database: one for time-series data, another for geospatial queries, and so on. "The problem with that approach is if you have four or five different use cases, you end up managing five different databases. It becomes a nightmare in terms of management, scalability, and integration," he says. Even those trying to move away from traditional databases often fall into the trap of viewing PostgreSQL as a modern alternative. "PostgreSQL is still relational in nature. It has the same row-and-column limitations and scalability issues." He also adds that if companies want to build a future-proof application especially one that infuses AI capabilities they need something that can handle all data types and offers native support for features like full-text search, hybrid search, and vector search. Other NoSQL players such as Redis and Apache Cassandra also have significant traction in India. Redis sees over 12 million daily downloads and reportedly earns 60 per cent of its revenue from national database projects. Apache Cassandra holds a 14.95 per cent presence in India, with enterprise users including Infosys, Fujitsu, and Panasonic. Amazon's DynamoDB commands around 9.5 per cent of the market. What's next for India? MongoDB operates from Bengaluru and Gurugram and plans to deepen its presence across India. "Our focus remains on startups, late-stage digital-native businesses (DNBs), ISVs, and enterprises. We'll continue working closely with customers to solve their data challenges," Chawla affirms.

Is Super Micro Computer Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold for July 2025?

Super Micro Computer (SMCI) continues to capture investor attention in July 2025 as one of the more volatile but potentially rewarding players in the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure space. The company has ridden the wave of demand for high-performance computing and AI-optimized server systems, positioning itself as a key enabler of next-generation data centers. Its partnerships with chipmakers like Nvidia (NVDA), coupled with an aggressive push into liquid-cooled and energy-efficient servers, have solidified its role in the broader AI ecosystem. Despite this growth narrative, SMCI stock faces a fair degree of skepticism due to concerns around slim margins, heavy reliance on a few major customers, and increased competition. As July begins and investors size up Super Micro's sharp climb against rising risks, is SMCI a wise portfolio addition? Or is the stock better left alone? Is Palantir Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold for July 2025? Microsoft Stock Is Headed for $4 Trillion. Is It Too Late to Buy MSFT Here? Is Plug Power Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold for July 2025? Markets move fast. Keep up by reading our FREE midday Barchart Brief newsletter for exclusive charts, analysis, and headlines. Super Micro Computer is a leading provider of high-performance and energy-efficient server and storage solutions, headquartered in San Jose, California. With a global presence and manufacturing operations in the U.S., Taiwan, and the Netherlands, the company holds a strong position in the rapidly growing AI hardware market. Its market capitalization currently stands at $29.3 billion. SMCI stock may be trading at half its 52-week high of $96.33, but it has been anything but quiet in 2025. The stock has climbed 55% year-to-date (YTD), riding the AI hardware wave and strong revenue projections along with deepening ties to Nvidia's Blackwell. Technically, the RSI near 64 (as of June 26th) shows rising strength, nearing overbought territory. That's a signal that bulls are firmly in charge for now. In terms of valuation, SMCI stock is priced at 27.7 times forward adjusted earnings and 1.9 times sales, trading at a discount compared to sector peers. Super Micro Computer reported its third-quarter results for fiscal 2025 (ended March 31, 2025) on May 6, presenting an overall mixed story. Net sales increased 19.5% year-over-year (YOY) to $4.6 billion, slightly above the consensus estimate and reflecting continued demand for AI-driven server and storage systems. However, the top line declined sequentially due to customers delaying key platform decisions amid economic uncertainty and tariff concerns. Margins came under considerable pressure, with non-GAAP gross margin easing to 9.6% from 15.5%. Although Super Micro is profitable, the company's non-GAAP EPS declined 53% YOY to $0.31 but came in higher than consensus estimates. Despite these near-term challenges, management highlighted its sustained confidence in the company's AI positioning and growth trajectory. CEO Charles Liang emphasized that many delayed orders are expected to close in the June and September quarters. Facing softer results, the company trimmed its fiscal 2025 revenue outlook. Management expects the top line to be between $21.8 billion and $22.6 billion, down from the prior guidance of a $23.5 billion to $25 billion range, signaling caution on near-term execution. Still, with Q4 guidance of between $5.6 billion and $6.4 billion in revenue and non-GAAP EPS between $0.40 and $0.50, management hinted at a rebound ahead. Analysts monitoring Super Micro project EPS to decline by 14% to around $1.72 for fiscal 2025, before rising by 27% to $2.18 for fiscal 2026. KeyBanc analyst Brandon Nispel initiated coverage on Super Micro with a 'Sector Weight' rating, signaling a wait-and-watch stance. Despite Super Micro's solid revenue growth, the analyst expects a sharp deceleration by the end of fiscal Q4. The concern is that Super Micro operates in what KeyBanc calls 'one of the most competitive businesses in the IT Hardware space,' which is pressuring gross margins. Profitability is slipping, and while growth remains solid, the lack of consistent free cash flow raises red flags. For KeyBanc, that's the true test of long-term value. In a market driven by AI demand and server wars, Super Micro's next chapter may be about defending its turf, not just growing it. Wall Street still sees promise in Super Micro, having a "Moderate Buy" rating overall. Out of 15 analysts covering the tech stock, four recommend a 'Strong Buy,' three give a 'Moderate Buy,' six remain cautious with 'Hold' ratings, and two have 'Strong Sell' ratings. The average analyst price target for SMCI stock is $41.21, indicating potential downside of 12.7%. However, the Street-high price target of $70 suggests that the stock could rally as much as 48%.
