Dakota Wesleyan University alumnus, board member Terry Nebelsick to speak at commencement
Nebelsick, of Huron, is a 1978 communications/theater graduate, the middle of three generations who attended Dakota Wesleyan, and currently serves as vice chair of the board of trustees. Retiring from full-time work in 2021, his career included radio broadcasting in Winner, teaching and coaching in Artesian and Gregory, serving as high school principal in Salem, Lead-Deadwood, and Huron, concluding his career as Huron Superintendent of Schools. He served four South Dakota governors on education committees. He was a high school and college basketball official for 35 years. Nebelsick was named South Dakota's Secondary Principal of the Year in 2000, Outstanding Superintendent in 2020, and Basketball Official of the Year in 2011.
Nebelsick continues to speak and present to school faculty and students, professional organizations and businesses. He is the lay leader at Huron Riverview United Methodist Church, serves on the UMC Dakota Conference on both the Common Table Committee and the Wisdom Council and is a lay speaker for area churches.
Nebelsick and his wife Diana have three children: Jennifer '04 (Brian) Lowery, Kayla Nebelsick, and Jeremy (Rachel) Nebelsick, and five grandchildren. His parents are Rowena Nebelsick MSN '55, and the late Earl Nebelsick '59.
The ceremony will be livestreamed at www.dwu.edu/live.
A baccalaureate service will be held prior to the commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. in the Sherman Center on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan.

Livingston County organization provides school supplies in annual Stuff the Bus event
School supplies aren't cheap, and that's where volunteers with Livingston County's Educational Service Agency come in. Friday's Stuff the Bus event is the organization's 24th annual effort to make sure all kids in Livingston County have what they need when they go back to school. "We are looking for pretty much anything that would go into a backpack, so anything from colored pencils, markers, folders, the backpack itself is really important to have as well," said Robin Schutz, community coordinator with the Livingston Educational Service Agency. "We are usually giving out just over 1,000 backpacks every year, so we found that the need has increased over the last few years." On Thursday, Aug. 7, residents can pick up a pre-packed backpack at five different locations around Livingston County. Schutz said she recommends students come along too, so they can pick out what they like. "We have staff from the districts there, so they might be able to see somebody from their local school there as well," she said. Familiar faces were at Friday's Stuff the Bus event, including Lynn Ridge, who drives a school bus for Livingston County districts. "The kids have my heart, so this helps them, it's the best thing in the world, you know," said Ridge. Ridge said she's helping to gather and organize school supplies and will see some of the kids she drives during the school year when they organize the backpacks. Ridge said she likes the work because she loves seeing young students thrive. "They have my heart, so anything I can do for them, for any of the kids in the community," said Ridge.

Brady named interim superintendent at Colton-Pierrepont Central School
Jul. 31—COLTON — A retired school superintendent is back in the superintendent's chair again. The St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services announced Thursday that Patrick H. Brady, who retired as the Massena Central School District's superintendent in 2023, would be serving as interim superintendent at Colton-Pierrepont Central School. The appointment was effective last Monday. Brady brings more than 35 years of experience in education and leadership to his new role. He steps into the position following the departure of James Nee, who has served as superintendent at Colton-Pierrepont since 2018. Nee will begin his new role as deputy superintendent at St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES on Monday. "I'm honored to join the Colton-Pierrepont community and support the district during this transition," Brady said in a press release. "I look forward to working closely with the Board of Education, staff, students, and families to continue the district's tradition of excellence and ensure a smooth start to the school year." Brady has served in a variety of leadership and instructional roles throughout his career, including superintendent positions at both Massena and Potsdam school districts. He also held roles as a junior high principal, assistant high school principal, and summer school teacher in Massena. Earlier in his career, he taught high school social studies at Potsdam for 12 years. The Colton-Pierrepont Board of Education has also announced that it is actively seeking a permanent superintendent and will keep the community informed as the search process moves forward.
