In response to growing backlash, the BBC yesterday put out a grovelling statement saying it "should have pulled" the stream of Bob Vylan's controversial performance.

The Beeb's statement said: "Millions of people tuned in to enjoy Glastonbury this weekend across the BBC's output but one performance within our live streams included comments that were deeply offensive.

"The BBC respects freedom of expression but stands firmly against incitement to violence.
"The anti-Semitic sentiments expressed by Bob Vylan were utterly unacceptable and have no place on our airwaves.
"We welcome Glastonbury's condemnation of the performance.
"The performance was part of a live stream of the West Holts stage on BBC iPlayer.

"The judgement on Saturday to issue a warning on screen while streaming online was in line with our editorial guidelines.
"In addition, we took the decision not to make the performance available on demand.
"The team were dealing with a live situation but with hindsight we should have pulled the stream during the performance. We regret this did not happen.
"In light of this weekend, we will look at our guidance around live events so we can be sure teams are clear on when it is acceptable to keep output on air."

But critics have demanded BBC chiefs be sacked for broadcasting the jibes which descended into a 'sickening hate rally'.
Corporation bosses have also been ordered to explain why licence fee cash was spent on the shameful outburst to viewers watching at home on the BBC iPlayer.
And, prior to the BBC's statement, broadcast regulator Ofcom, which is conducting its own probe, said it was "very concerned" by the performance, adding: "The BBC clearly has questions to answer."

Controversial Irish rock group Kneecap are also subject to the probe after the group took to the stage and led a "free Palestine" chant before leading five chants against the
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that cops were investigating the two groups after video and audio footage had been examined.
Posting on X, the force said: "Video footage and audio from Bob Vylan and Kneecap's performances at Glastonbury Festival has been reviewed.
"Following the completion of that assessment process we have decided further enquiries are required and a criminal investigation is now being undertaken.

"A senior detective has been appointed to lead this investigation.
"This has been recorded as a public order incident at this time while our enquiries are at an early stage."
It confirmed that it had received a "large amount" of contact from across the world about the disturbing performances.
"The investigation will be evidence-led and will closely consider all appropriate legislation, including relating to hate crimes.

"We have received a large amount of contact in relation to these events from people across the world and recognise the strength of public feeling.
"There is absolutely no place in society for hate.
"Neighbourhood policing teams are speaking with people in their local communities and key stakeholders to make sure anyone who needs us knows we are here for them.
"We hope the work we have carried out, and our continuing to carry out, reassures the public how seriously we are treating Saturday's events.

"We politely ask the public to refrain from continuing to report this matter to us because an investigation is already taking place."

Posting on X, he said: "The Department of State has revoked the US visas for the members of the Bob Vylan band in light of their hateful tirade at Glastonbury, including leading the crowd in death chants.
"Foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country."

BBC bosses had already said that Kneecap's performance wouldn't be shown live on Saturday afternoon but act Bob Vylan – on stage before them - caught them unawares.

WHY wasn't it immediately obvious to the BBC bosses in charge at Glastonbury that Bob Vylan's vile rants were hate-filled racism?
Would they have broadcast a performer screaming anti-Muslim or far right hate speech? Of course not.
Perhaps a clue lies in the masses of evidence of anti-Israeli institutional bias from the Beeb since the October 7 Hamas terror attacks.
The 'death to the IDF' chant by Pascal Robinson-Foster — the real name of Bob Vylan's singer — was so obviously incitement that it has triggered a police investigation.
Equally shameful was the rapper's extended diatribe against his former Jewish record label boss.
Yet the BBC was happy to put it out live on iPlayer — where it remained for five hours.
Its apology yesterday — offering simply to 'review guidelines' — didn't go anywhere near addressing the real problem.
Unless bosses properly confront the culture of anti-Israel sentiment at the Corporation, such disgusting incidents will keep on happening.

'An opportunity missed': RTÉ will again not be televising any of Electric Picnic this year
RTÉ WILL NOT be providing any TV coverage of this year's Electric Picnic, continuing a policy that has been in place for the last five stagings of the festival. The lack of coverage has been branded as an 'opportunity missed' by the Music and Entertainment Association of Ireland (MEAI), which says that Irish acts in particular would benefit hugely from the TV exposure. RTÉ provided live coverage and highlights from Ireland's largest music festival for a number of years about a decade ago, but last did so back in 2017. 2FM will be broadcasting live radio coverage of Electric Picnic, and three other music festivals this summer , but RTÉ has confirmed to The Journal that no TV coverage is planned. The BBC's coverage of the Glastonbury festival has been controversial this year following performances from Irish rap trip Kneecap and English punk rap duo Bob Vylan, but the annual coverage of the festival by the BBC has been extremely popular. In 2023, more than 23 million people watched Glastonbury on the BBC and this year the broadcaster was planning over 90 hours of performances across its live streams. The BBC chose not to broadcast Kneecap's performance at the festival this year but a live-stream of the gig by a woman on TikTok was viewed by over a million people . Yesterday, it was confirmed that Kneecap had been added to the bill at the upcoming Electric Picnic and The Journal confirmed with RTÉ that no TV coverage of the festival is planned. Asked why TV coverage of the festival hasn't been an annual commitment in light of the previous coverage, an RTÉ spokesperson said this was 'an editorial decision'. Advertisement Asked whether the decision was based on resources and whether TV coverage of the event could return in the future, the spokesperson said: RTÉ reviews all its coverage plans across all services on a regular basis. 'Missed opportunity' Jackie Conboy, a co-founder of the MEAI which lobbies for more airplay of Irish artists , says that broadcasting Electric Picnic would be a major benefit both for the artists themselves and for marketing Irish music abroad. 'It's a huge opportunity that's been missed and I do not understand why. TV is a major platform and even to have the footage for them to have on their website or their social, like that's a major thing,' he told The Journal . We're always on about festivals and about trying to get airplay. We've gone in front of various committees in relation to this and it seems to just fall on deaf ears. 'It's so obvious and it's common sense that if you're selling Ireland abroad this is one of the huge ways to do it, and a very simple way to do it and yet again we're being ignored.' Conboy also references the three-year €725 million funding package that RTÉ was awarded last year by government under a new 'multi-annual' funding model. 'When you look at the €720-odd million given to RTÉ, and yet they're pulling back on all this stuff now. They're talking about putting 25% of content out to independent producers but here was a great example of doing something positive for the music industry here and for new acts.' 'Whatever about the well-known international acts they don't need that kind of coverage but the likes of the new acts do,' he adds. Conboy acknowledges that the outside broadcast units that would be required to televise Electric Picnic would perhaps be expensive but there could be ways to fund that. 'You can get sponsorship and the fact that there seems to be so much money for other things but not when it comes to stuff like this,' he says.
