Japan Coast Guard rescues injured crew from Chinese ship near contested waters
The Chinese survey ship Ke Xue requested the rescue by the Japan Coast Guard on Wednesday, saying that one of the crewmembers suffered a hand injury during the survey operation in the area off the southern coast of Miyako Island, according to the JCG.
The JCG patrol vessel picked up the crewmember, a Chinese national in his 40s, from the survey ship and transported him to Naha on the main Okinawa island for hospital treatment.
The Ke Xue is one of a number of Chinese survey vessels that operate in waters in the East China Sea, where China has increasingly stepped up maritime activity and routinely sends survey vessels, coast guard ships, as well as warships and aircraft, often violating Japanese territorial waters and airspace.
Japanese officials said that on Monday, another Chinese survey ship lowered a wire into the sea known as the Japanese exclusive economic zone — an area where Japan claims rights to conduct economic activity — east of Japan's southernmost island of Okinotorishima, without permission from the Japanese government.
The JCG patrol aircraft warned the survey ship to move out of the waters, and the Japanese government lodged a protest to the Chinese side.

Previously, Beijing has alleged Japan flew close to its aircraft and was spying on China's ordinary military activity and demanded Japan stop its actions. Japan is concerned about China's acceleration of its military buildup, especially in Japan's southwestern areas. Japan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement late Thursday that its vice minister Takehiro Funakoshi expressed 'serious concern' to Chinese Ambassador to Japan Wu Jianghao and strongly requested Beijing to stop the activity that could 'provoke accidental collisions' and strongly urged China to ensure that similar actions are not repeated. The countries traded accusations over similar close encounters last month. Japan said a Chinese combat aircraft flew extremely close to Japanese navy P-3C surveillance aircraft over the Pacific Ocean, where two Chinese aircraft carrier s were seen operating together for the first time.

Japan Protests Chinese Fighter Jets Tailing Japanese Aircraft
Tokyo complained to Beijing after Chinese fighter jets tailed Japanese patrol aircraft twice this week, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Chinese JH-7 fighter jets tailed Japanese YS-11EB patrol planes in the East China Sea for about 15 minutes on Wednesday and about 10 minutes on Thursday, a Defense Ministry statement said.
