Pensioner, 82, who died after burglary by teenagers cried out for ‘Mummy'

Telegraph09-05-2025
An 82-year-old pensioner who died after being burgled by a pair of masked teenage boys was left crying out for her 'Mummy', a court heard.
Joy Middleditch, a great-grandmother, was found on her kitchen floor with broken ribs in Pakefield, Suffolk, 12 hours after the burglary in March 2023.
She died in hospital two days after a 'planned' robbery by two boys, aged 14 and 15, who wore 'intimidating masks' and had smoked cannabis.
The boys, who are now 16 and 17 but cannot be named for legal reasons, were sentenced to two years in a youth detention centre on Friday.
Sentencing the pair, District Judge Kenneth Sheraton said Middleditch was found with five broken ribs and bruising.
A trial at Great Yarmouth magistrates' court heard last month that she was 'calling for her mother' during the burglary on March 25 2023.
The two boys had shared a joint of cannabis before walking two miles to Middleditch's bungalow.
Hanna Llewelyn-Waters, prosecuting, told the previous hearing that they had made a 'beeline' for her address and that it was 'inconceivable that they did not know the house was lived in by an elderly person'.
The court heard they climbed over a gate to the rear of the bungalow and opened the back door.
In a police interview, the older boy claimed he was merely following his friend, saying he 'followed to see what he was doing'.
'He opened the door, and there was a dog growling,' he said. 'It was only a little thing, so he just ran in. She was inside, and he pushed her into the table.
'He then grabbed her bag and ran back out. I shut the door and followed him. She was screaming, 'Get out of my house' and 'Mummy'.'
The boy added that Middleditch had told him to shut the door so her dog would not run away.
Ms Llewelyn-Waters said his claims of non-involvement were 'nonsense' and that the pair had 'acted together', with the younger boy not giving evidence because 'he has no account to give that will stand up to scrutiny'.
The boys were both convicted of burglary after the trial.
Judge Sheraton told the sentencing hearing that Middleditch was only found 12 hours later.
'I have been sitting in magistrates' courts for many years, and I have no hesitation in saying this is one of the nastiest cases I have seen,' he said.
The judge added: 'Both boys would have seen the mobility frame by the back door and both boys would have been aware that this was an elderly lady.
'Both boys left the victim on the floor, knowing she had limited mobility, and she had been found some 12 hours later by her son and daughter-in-law after they could not get an answer on the phone.'
When the sentencing was announced, the mothers of both boys burst into tears.
The older defendant asked if he could say goodbye to his mother, but his request was denied.
Following the hearing in April which saw the boys found guilty of robbery, the victim's family issued a statement which said: 'The network of persons affected by this does not just end with us.
'Joy was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister to several siblings, an aunt and a close friend to many.
'She was worth more than to be a victim of cruel, thoughtless criminals.'

Missing boy, 7, found dead inside washing machine as family member is jailed for heinous crime

A Texas father has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after his 7-year-old adopted son was discovered dead inside a washing machine at the family's home. Jermaine Thomas, from Spring, Texas, was convicted of murder nearly three years after the horrific 2022 death of little Troy Koehler, according to the Harris County District Attorney's Office. Troy was reported missing on July 28, 2022, when Jermaine told deputies he came home late and found the front door open and his son gone. But police soon discovered Troy's body inside the washing machine in the garage. Troy's body was found stuffed inside the top-loading machine just hours after Thomas called police claiming the boy had vanished in the middle of the night. But investigators revealed that Troy had been abused leading up to his death. An autopsy showed the child had suffered multiple injuries, both new and healing, with evidence of asphyxiation, blunt-force trauma, and possible drowning, according to KPRC. Prosecutors say Troy's adoptive parents were enraged over missing snacks like oatmeal cream pies and donut sticks, and used them as justification for the abuse. At one point, Troy's adoptive mother, Tiffany Thomas, allegedly threatened to put him in the oven until he confessed to eating her food. Court records reveal the chilling message Jermaine sent to his wife: 'I need to get the [locks]. I'm going to end up [killing] him.' During the sentencing hearing, Sheryl Reed, Troy's first-grade teacher, recalled the bright, book-loving boy who once dreamed of becoming a leader. 'Today a reader, tomorrow a leader. That was always Troy. He loved reading. If he finished early, he'd head straight to our class library.' She recalled how Troy would rush to the classroom library and then happily share stories with classmates. 'Then he'd go right back to share those stories with lifting others up with the joy he carried.' 'But Troy wasn't just leading his classmates-he led me, too. He led me to become a better teacher, a better mentor, and a better person,' she continued. 'His energy, his smile, and his love for learning reminded me daily why I chose this path.' It's unclear if the boy's mother ever faced charges.

Britain's most wanted fugitive is still on the run 20 years after mother-of-three was shot dead while sleeping - as family reveal key clue in cold case

Britain's most wanted fugitive is still at large exactly 20 years after a mother-of-three was shot dead in her own home. Kevin Parle is the prime suspect in the murder of Lucy Hargreaves, 22, who was fatally wounded when three men burst into her house and opened fire while she was sleeping on the sofa on August 3 2005. The killers then set fire to the home in Liverpool, where her partner and two-year-old daughter were upstairs, forcing them to escape through a window. Her murder was described as 'one of the most brutal and callous acts' Merseyside Police had seen. Two decades on, her family are still fighting for justice. There have been no confirmed sightings or trace of Parle - who is also the prime suspect in the murder of 16-year-old Liam Kelly in the city in 2004. Meanwhile, two young men prosecuted for her murder had charges dropped after a judge ruled there was insufficient evidence against them. In a statement marking the anniversary of her death, Lucy's family have revealed a clue which they hope will bring them justice. They said: 'Over the past 20 years, people will have talked with family and friends. A number of people were contacted by males using a phone that was stolen, along with a vehicle used in Lucy's murder. 'The people who received those calls, along with others, could have information which could be crucial in achieving justice for Lucy, her parents, sister, children and all her extended family and friends. 'We appeal directly to them to please come forward. Now is the time.' Police arrested 21 people as part of their investigations, but no-one has been convicted. A comprehensive review into her murder was launched by Merseyside Police two years ago and remains ongoing. Former Scotland Yard detective Peter Bleksley previously spent four years on a personal hunt for Parle. There have been reports of him in Spain, Australia and Dubai but no confirmed sightings or any substantial leads that have helped catch him. Howard Rubbery, head of the serious case review unit, said: 'It is now 20 years since Lucy was taken from her family in the most brutal of circumstances. 'After carrying out the killing, the offenders ignored the cries of a toddler upstairs as they poured petrol around the house and set fire to it. 'Their callous and reckless actions could have claimed the lives of two more people that night, had they not escaped the flames by jumping from a window upstairs. 'We are as determined as ever to get justice for Lucy, whose death robbed her family of a loving mother and daughter. 'As with any unsolved murder, time is no barrier to our pursuit of justice for Lucy and we appeal to anyone with any information, no matter how small it may seem, to contact us.' Ms Hargreaves' family, who said they 'miss her every single day', welcomed a focus on tackling violence against women and girls in recent years. They praised the families of other victims of gun crime, including the mothers of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt Korbel and Ashley Dale, 28, who were shot in their homes in separate incidents in Liverpool in August 2022. The family said: 'We greatly admire the determination and guts of the families of those who have more recently been killed as a result of gun crime here in Merseyside. 'The mums of both Ashley Dale and Olivia Pratt Korbel have led a real and powerful community challenge to men of violence.' The family added: 'We consider ourselves to be an ordinary local family with strong roots in the Walton, Norris Green, Croxteth and Dovecot areas of Liverpool. 'Lucy's nanny Joyce was a strong mother of eight who had to cope with the loss of three granddaughters in her lifetime - including Lucy. 'Her nanny Betty, left a widow aged 35 with six children to bring up, was awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to nursing as an auxiliary nurse in the Royal Liverpool Hospital. 'They were two strong local women typical of their generation, and Lucy too was a strong woman who could have achieved so much had she only been given the opportunity.' Detectives are continuing to appeal for anyone with information about a gold Lexus car, believed to have been dumped shortly after the shooting on Richard Kelly Drive, Clubmoor, by a number of men who then ran in the direction of Normandale Road. Police previously said they wanted to speak to Parle in connection with Ms Hargreaves' murder. Parle, who was believed to be living abroad, was also wanted in connection with the murder of Liam Kelly, 16, who was shot in the early hours of June 19 2004 in Dingle, Liverpool. Anyone with information should contact the Merseyside Police social media desk via X @MerPolCC, on Facebook at Merseyside Police Contact Centre or through the website Information can also be reported anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
