
The microplastics lurking in your kitchen cupboards: Experts reveal the popular products that release the most dangerous particles - including teabags, baby bottles, and chopping boards
Next time you eat from a container or swig from a cup, you may be ingesting more than just food and drink.
Scientists in Switzerland warn that ever-ubiquitous plastic food packaging is leaving us constantly exposed to tiny microplastics and even smaller 'nanoplastics'.
These fragments, less than 0.2 of an inch (5mm) in diameter, are so small that they're invisible to the naked eye.
The team's new study found evidence of microplastics in several popular items - including baby bottles, chopping boards, and even teabags.
When we ingest them, the tiny fragments don't just pass through the body and out the other end, but lodge in organs in the body, such as the heart, lungs and brain.
While the long-term effects of these particles on human health remain unclear, they've been linked to cancer and strokes, dementia and pregnancy complications.
'Plastic food contact articles can release microplastics and nanoplastics into foodstuffs,' the experts warn.
'To better protect human health, regulations could mandate microplastics and nanoplastics migration testing.'
In the study, the experts from Food Packaging Forum, a non-profit organisation in Zurich, evaluated 103 previously published microplastics studies.
These studies had investigated microplastics that had been in contact with 'food contact articles' (FCAs) – plastic items commonly found in the home and the industry.
Examples of FCAs include baby bottles, disposable cups, trays, wrapping such as cling film, chopping boards and even teabags.
The researchers warn that microplastics tend to be released during 'the normal use as intended by the manufacturer' of these FCAs.
For example, opening a bottle with a plastic lid leads to abrasion and microplastics rubbing off against the skin, as does cutting on plastic chopping boards.
Meanwhile, swirling a teabag in a mug of hot water effectively releases particles from the plastic sealant used in some teabags.
'Food contact articles are a relevant source of MNPs in foodstuffs; however, their contribution to human MNP exposure is underappreciated,' said Dr Zimmermann.
According to the team's findings, 173 of the studies found microplastics had been shed from plastic bottles – more than any other item.
Most of the plastics were in the microplastics range (1-1,000 micrometres) but others were defined as nanoplastics (less than 1 micrometre). Others were 'mesoplastics' (1-10mm) which are generally large enough to see with the naked eye
This does not necessarily mean that plastic bottles shed the most microplastics; rather that there are more studies to suggest plastic bottles are a source of microplastics compared with other FCAs.
Also, 115 studies found microplastics coming from 'other containers', 68 studies found microplastics from tea bags and 59 studies found them from cups.
Among the other FCAs identified as leaking microplastics were bags (57 studies), trays (19 studies), wrapping (11 studies) and chopping boards (one study).
Worryingly, 27 studies found microplastics had been shed from baby bottles and related accessories, showing that we're exposed to them from birth.
Also, the researchers found that the main food contact material was PET (polyethylene terephthalate) or rPET (the recycled version).
One of the most widely used plastics globally, PET is a clear, strong and lightweight plastic takes hundreds of years to break down in the environment when it is discarded.
Meanwhile, most of the plastics were in the microplastics range (1-1,000 micrometres) but others were defined as nanoplastics (less than 1 micrometre).
Others were 'mesoplastics' (1-10mm) which are generally large enough to see with the naked eye.
Already, microplastics have been found in human blood, the brain, the gut, the placenta of unborn babies and the faeces of adults and infants.
Health consequences of exposures to these particles 'are not yet fully understood', the team say in their paper, published in npj Science of Food.
But available scientific evidence indicates that microplastics and nanoplastics can alter 'the composition of the human gut microbiome', the trillion-strong community of microorganisms in your belly helps control digestion and benefits your immune system.
Other research suggests exposure leads to oxidative stress and inflammation, neurotoxicity, immunological and reproductive effects, and changes to endocrine signaling, a vital communication system within the body controlled by hormones.
Taken together, the emerging evidence strongly suggests that mitigating human exposure to MNPs [microplastics and nanoplastics] is prudent,' the team add.

WHAT CAN MICROPLASTICS DO TO THE HUMAN BODY IF THEY END UP IN OUR FOOD SUPPLY?
According to an article published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, our understanding of the potential human health effects from exposure to microplastics 'constitutes major knowledge gaps.'
Humans can be exposed to plastic particles via consumption of seafood and terrestrial food products, drinking water and via the air.
However, the level of human exposure, chronic toxic effect concentrations and underlying mechanisms by which microplastics elicit effects are still not well understood enough in order to make a full assessment of the risks to humans.
According to Rachel Adams, a senior lecturer in Biomedical Science at Cardiff Metropolitan University, ingesting microplastics could cause a number of potentially harmful effects, such as:
Inflammation: when inflammation occurs, the body's white blood cells and the substances they produce protect us from infection. This normally protective immune system can cause damage to tissues.
An immune response to anything recognised as 'foreign' to the body: immune responses such as these can cause damage to the body.
Becoming carriers for other toxins that enter the body: microplastics generally repel water and will bind to toxins that don't dissolve, so microplastics can bind to compounds containing toxic metals such as mercury, and organic pollutants such as some pesticides and chemicals called dioxins, which are known to causes cancer, as well as reproductive and developmental problems. If these microplastics enter the body, toxins can accumulate in fatty tissues.

Tory MP accused of asking for client's help with parliamentary questions
A former Tory minister allegedly asked for help in writing parliamentary questions from a company that paid him £60,000 a year. George Freeman canvassed the director of GHGSat, a green technology firm, on 'what to ask' Labour ministers about, according to leaked emails. On Saturday night, Kemi Badenoch, the Tory leader, was facing pressure to strip the whip from the Conservative MP, who has referred himself to the Commons watchdog. Mr Freeman, who served as a science minister under Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak, said: 'I don't believe I have done anything wrong.' The Times obtained emails that were sent between him and a director at the firm, which hired him as a paid adviser last year. In the exchanges, the MP reportedly raised 'what to ask about' when he submitted written questions related to the sector in which the firm works. In one, he asked whether the business could help him 'get the wording right', which he could 'convert into parliamentary language'. The Times reported that some of the written questions he then submitted used the same phrases that had been suggested by the company. Commissioner to investigate Mr Freeman started working for the firm, which uses satellites and aircraft to help businesses monitor their emissions, last April. But a spokesman for GHGSat confirmed that he no longer worked for it, telling The Times: 'GHGSat retained George Freeman MP for a brief period to help GHGSat understand and navigate the geopolitical environment in the UK and Europe. 'GHGSat signed a services agreement with Mr Freeman that did not include any lobbying activities and was concluded on the basis of the terms laid out by the advisory committee on business appointments. GHGSat takes all applicable laws and regulations concerning lobbying extremely seriously.' As well as his role as a constituency MP, Mr Freeman also sits on the Commons committee on Science, Innovation and Technology. He has referred himself to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, who will investigate whether there was a breach of the rules. Labour and the Liberal Democrats called on Mrs Badenoch to remove the Tory whip from him whilst the investigation was carried out. A Labour spokesman said: 'George Freeman has referred himself for investigation, so now Kemi Badenoch must suspend him from the Tory whip.' Daisy Cooper, the Lib Dem deputy leader, said: 'This looks like the same old sleaze and scandal people have come to expect from the Conservative Party. 'Kemi Badenoch should immediately suspend the whip from George Freeman while this is investigated. Failure to act would confirm that, even after being booted out of government, the Conservatives are still hopelessly out of touch.' A Conservative Party spokesman said: 'George Freeman MP has referred himself to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner. It would be inappropriate for the Conservative Party to comment further whilst the Commissioner's inquiries are ongoing.' 'Very concerned' over leaking of emails Mr Freeman was elected to his Mid Norfolk constituency in 2010. Were he found to have broken the rules, he could ultimately be suspended from Parliament. If an independent panel handed down a suspension of more than 10 days, that would trigger a recall petition for a by-election in the seat. In a statement, Mr Freeman said he was 'very concerned' at the leaking of his private emails, which he had referred to the police. He said: 'As a long-standing advocate of important new technologies, companies and industries, working cross-party through APPGs and the select committee, I regularly ask experts for clarification on technical points and terminology, and deeply respect and try to assiduously follow the code of conduct for MPs and the need to act always in the public interest. 'Throughout my 15 years in Parliament and government, I have always understood the need to be transparent in the work I have done for and with commercial clients and charities and am always willing to answer any criticism. 'I don't believe I have done anything wrong, but I am immediately referring myself to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards and will accept his judgement in due course. I am very concerned at the unauthorised and targeted access to my emails and diary, which I have raised with the police and Parliamentary authorities.' The revelations will reignite the debate around MPs' second jobs and whether they leave them open to potential conflicts of interest.

This 10-year plan may be the last chance to save the NHS
The 10-year plan for the National Health Service that Sir Keir Starmer is expected to publish in the next few days is likely to be a somewhat incoherent document. From the advance publicity, it would seem to have a lot of disconnected ideas in it, some good, some not so good and some irrelevant. The government hopes that weight-loss drugs will offer the hope of a big advance against obesity-related illnesses – but this comes after new figures raised concerns about their safety. If large language models can speed up the development of new pharmaceuticals, so much the better. But we remain sceptical about whether supermarkets ought to be recruited into policing their customers' calorie intakes. What will decide the success or failure of the NHS over the next decade, however, will be the design of the structural reforms to the service. Wes Streeting, the health and social care secretary, has made a good start in two respects. He has welcomed private-sector providers to help deliver NHS services free at the point of need, and he has taken an axe to the central bureaucracy of NHS England. The test for the 10-year plan will be the extent to which it brings in further changes to incentives throughout the NHS so that it becomes responsive to patients. Sir Jim Mackey, the new chief executive of the NHS, says many of the right things. 'It feels like we've built mechanisms to keep the public away because it's an inconvenience,' he says in his first interview since taking up the post three months ago. He says of the current NHS: 'It takes forever. It costs a fortune. We need to 'de-layer it' because it's expensive, it slows decision-making down, it de-powers people who need to make decisions.' The sentiment is right, but again, some of his ideas seem better than others. We are not convinced that using patient satisfaction surveys to decide how much money NHS trusts receive is going to work. The evidence of reform under the last Labour government was that the mere existence of competition from private-sector providers had a dramatic effect on the performance of NHS units. Already, there are the very early signs that the extra resources put into the NHS are bearing fruit, less than 12 months after the change of government. Luke Tryl, the opinion pollster for More in Common, reported on BBC's Newsnight on Friday that people in focus groups are starting to report positive experiences of the NHS for the first time since the pandemic. 'If there is a bright spot for the government, it's the NHS,' he said. One of the biggest challenges for Sir Jim and Mr Streeting, however, is more political than structural. They have to send the starkest message to doctors: please do not go on strike; take responsibility; show leadership; it is up to you to make the NHS work, because if it cannot be turned round this time, then it probably is the end of this model of healthcare. Sir Jim appears to understand this. He says that his 'big worry' is that if the NHS cannot deliver a service that is better at listening to patients – the particular example he gave was maternity care – 'we'll lose the population; if we lose the population, we've lost the NHS; for me, it's straightforward: the two things are completely dependent on each other.' He is absolutely right. Universal healthcare free at the point of need is a noble idea, but it desperately needs Labour's reforms to work if it is to survive.

Everything else is back to normal except the ability to swallow but despite doing all the exercises, given by the Speech and Language Therapy team, nothing has worked. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy is private and expensive. Is there any other treatment available? A) Dysphagia is the inability to swallow, which is why you have been fed via a tube into the stomach. I'm sorry to hear that you haven't seen improvement despite support from SALT. NMES aims to retrain the nerves and muscles, and SALT exercises increase effectiveness. But it lacks sufficient robust evidence at the moment to be rolled out. However, it can be used as part of clinical trials or audits. A newer NHS-supported treatment, pharyngeal electrical stimulation, targets the throat's pharynx region. It aims to 'rewire' nerve pathways. Clinical trials (eg, the PHADER study) show it improves swallowing safety and reduces aspiration risk in stroke patients. The NHS is also currently investigating transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) aimed to reactivate swallowing centres in the brain. Other therapies include Botox if muscle stiffness is an issue and surgery to dilate the oesophagus. Do request a multidisciplinary reassessment (neurologist and SALT) to explore your options. And do ask about NHS trials.
