ROME - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Wednesday he had held a "substantive" conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump's Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, in Rome shortly after Trump pledged to send more defensive weapons to Kyiv.
"We discussed weapons supplies and strengthening air defense. Given the increase in Russian attacks, this remains one of our top priorities," Zelenskiy wrote on the X social media platform.
"We also covered the purchase of American weapons, joint defense manufacturing, and localization efforts in Ukraine," he added.
Both men were in Italy ahead of a conference on July 10-11 dedicated to Ukraine's recovery and long-term reconstruction following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, now 40 months old.
Zelenskiy said he and Kellogg had discussed at length proposals to slap tougher sanctions on Moscow, as the Ukrainian leader has long advocated as the best means to persuade the Kremlin to abide by a ceasefire and move toward peace.
"We understand the need for tougher restrictions on Russian energy, especially secondary sanctions targeting buyers of Russian oil," Zelenskiy wrote.
He expressed hope for progress in a bill on stiffer sanctions now before the U.S. Congress, sponsored by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut. The legislation, he said, "could certainly make Russia give greater thought to peace".
U.S. attempts to oversee an end to the war in Ukraine through diplomacy have largely stalled.
On Tuesday, Trump aimed unusually direct criticism at Russian president Vladimir Putin, saying the Kremlin leader's statements on moving towards peace were "meaningless".
Trump said on Monday he had approved the supply of additional weapons to Ukraine, primarily defensive ones, to help it defend itself against Russian advances. The Pentagon had stalled some shipments a week earlier.
POPE LEO OFFERS TO HOST PEACE TALKS
Zelenskiy also met Pope Leo at the papal summer residence of Castel Gandolfo and the Pontiff told him that the Vatican was willing to host Russia-Ukraine peace talks. It was the Ukrainian leader's second meeting with Leo in his two-month-old papacy.
The Rome conference - the fourth such event since Russia's February 2022 invasion of its neighbour - is mainly aimed at mobilising international support for Ukraine.
An Italian government source said about 500 billion euros ($585 billion) would be needed for the reconstruction, recovery and modernisation of Ukraine, citing World Bank estimates.
Italy also announced that Kellogg would take part in a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing grouping on Thursday, the first time the United States has taken part in a meeting of the European-dominated group of countries backing Ukraine.
Kyiv has asked Washington to sell it more Patriot missiles and systems that it sees as key to defending its cities.
Germany said last week it was in talks on buying Patriot air defence systems for Ukraine to bridge the gap after the Pentagon briefly paused some shipments.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will open the Rome conference with Zelenskiy and European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is expected to be in Rome along with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Dutch leader Dick Schoof and Greece's Kyriakos Mitsotakis among others, the source said. REUTERS

Gaza ceasefire talks held up by Israel withdrawal plans: Palestinian sources
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Israel's refusal to withdraw all of its troops from Gaza was holding back progress on securing a deal. GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories - Indirect talks between Hamas and Israel for a ceasefire in Gaza are being held up by Israel's proposals to keep troops in the territory, two Palestinian sources with knowledge of the discussions told AFP on July 12. Delegations from both sides began discussions in Qatar on July 6 to try to agree on a temporary halt to the 21-month conflict sparked by Hamas's attack on Israel on Oct 7, 2023. Both Hamas and Israel have said that 10 living hostages who were taken that day and who are still in captivity would be released if an agreement for a 60-day ceasefire were reached. But one well-informed Palestinian source said Israel's refusal to withdraw all of its troops from Gaza was holding back progress on securing a deal. 'The negotiations in Doha are facing a setback and complex difficulties due to Israel's insistence, as of Friday, on presenting a map of withdrawal, which is actually a map of redeployment and repositioning of the Israeli army rather than a genuine withdrawal,' the source said. Hamas has said it wants the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, which is home to more than two million people. The source said, however, that the Israeli delegation presented a map at the talks which proposed maintaining military forces in more than 40 per cent of the Palestinian territory. Top stories Swipe. Mediators have asked both sides to postpone the talks until the arrival of US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Mr Steve Witkoff, in Doha, they added. A second Palestinian source said 'some progress' had been made on plans for releasing Palestinian prisoners and getting more aid to Gaza. But they accused the Israeli delegation of having no authority, and 'stalling and obstructing the agreement in order to continue the war of extermination'. AFP

White House Sparks Outrage with 'Superman Trump' Post, Netizens Demand Epstein Client List
The White House set the internet alight Wednesday when it posted an image of former president Donald Trump transformed into Superman. The post, "Symbol of Hope. Truth. Justice. The American Way. Superman Trump" was met with immediate criticism from critics—and supporters. The muscular imagery, showing Trump with a Superman cape, seemed designed as a rallying point. But for many users it was a distraction. Reactions flooded social media, with netizens demanding answers about the long-speculated Epstein client list. The fury rekindled arguments over Trump's former associations with the late Jeffrey Epstein, the financier accused of trafficking young women. Critics described the post as a tactical move to distract from serious allegations. "A massive distraction launched by the Trump regime to hide his sordid history with Epstein," one user wrote on X. Others were simply in shock that a graphic of this nature emerged from an official White House account. Others criticized the page's professionalism and credibility. But even Trump supporters said they were frustrated: they felt the post made fun of their intelligence and ignored more important issues. "Where's the Epstein list?" became a popular query in comment threads. Even though the Trump administration has insisted in the past that no such list exists, the public clamor for transparency has increased only in volume. Dean Cain, who played Superman on the 1990s series Lois & Clark, added a laughing emoji. Cain is a very vocal Trump supporter and has also attacked new portrayals of Superman as "woke." He recently took aim at filmmaker James Gunn, who described Superman as a symbol of kindness and immigrant values. The bizarre parody of the Trump Superman image was also mocked by several political groups. The X account "Republicans Against Trump" shared the photo with a snarky caption: "Hail Superman Trump. Totally normal stuff." Another user wrote, "The White House page is just a sloppy engagement farm now." As the post spread, however, it redirected the focus to older questions about Epstein and who was affiliated with him. For many the picture is more than just a meme—it's a symbol of side-concealedness, furthering broader suspicions about transparency at the highest level. The tide of revulsion does not appear to be slowing. Between amused responses and cries of wrath for justice, the Trump/Superman post has contributed to an already fiery political environment.

Who Is Behind Aqua 1? Mystery UAE Crypto Fund Sends $100M to Trump's Digital Wallet
A relatively unknown crypto fund, Aqua 1 Foundation, claiming to be based in the United Arab Emirates, has quietly emerged as the largest public investor in US President Donald Trump's cryptocurrency venture, World Liberty. In late June, Aqua 1 announced a massive $100 million investment in the token project. However, Reuters investigations revealed nearly no verifiable information about its origin, funding, or leadership, especially the man named as its founding partner, Dave Lee. No clear digital trail leads to Lee, and Aqua 1's public email contact, Dora Lee, only issued a brief, unsigned statement. The fund described itself as being backed by "long-term, mission-aligned partners" and a team of Web3 experts. But corporate registries across the UAE, including Abu Dhabi's Global Market and Dubai's VARA, showed no record of Aqua 1 or its claimed affiliations. World Liberty's token, $WLFI, has so far funneled around $500 million into the Trump family's pockets, according to estimates. This includes Aqua 1's purchase, which likely sent tens of millions directly to the Trump family trust. White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly insisted President Trump had no direct involvement, claiming the assets are managed by his children. The identities behind other large token buyers—such as Justin Sun and DWF Labs—are known, but Aqua 1 remains shrouded in secrecy. Even crypto experts and legal professionals in the UAE couldn't find a trace of Aqua 1 in official records. Its website, created just a month before the investment, lacks any team or ownership details. Ethics watchdogs are alarmed. Richard Painter, former ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, warned that this kind of anonymous investment undermines public trust. "We ought to know who is sending money to the president," he said. Aqua 1 has no confirmed registration in any UAE financial authority. Crypto tracking platforms show its only major activity was sending $80 million to World Liberty. Its Medium profile suggests it manages just $100 million—indicating that the Trump-linked deal is its sole major investment.
