I can never make them: Mani Ratnam on directing comedy films

India Gazette26-05-2025
New Delhi [India], May 26 (ANI): Critically acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam admitted that he cannot make comedy films despite how much he loves the genre.
Filmmaker Ratnam interacted with the media during the promotion of his upcoming film 'Thug Life' in Delhi, which also stars Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR in lead roles.
During a press conference on Monday, the 'Nayakan' director opened up about his favourite genre and said that even though he loves comedy films, he cannot make them. He chooses to only watch it.
'The genre I like most, I am not good at them, so I don't make them. I just watch it. He (Kamal Haasan) does comedy, and it's unbelievable the comedy films he does, and I can never make them. So, I just watch,' said Mani Ratnam.
However, Kamal Haasan believes that it is not that Mani Ratnam cannot make comedy films, but he just chooses not to.
'It's a choice, it's not like he can't, he won't. That's what I think. I have spoken to him. He is not those people who are very serious when we joke, this gentleman laughs. So he gets it. But somewhere, he has kept himself that way,' said Kamal Haasan.
Mani Ratnam is one of the veteran directors in the Indian film industry with whom every actor dreams to collaborate.
During a recent interview with ANI, Mani Ratnam got candid about being called a 'dream director'.
'Some people would like the dream to remain a dream,' he quipped.
Explaining his collaborative process with the actors, Mani Ratnam added, 'So, it's not like you wanting to work with several actors ..(It's a two-way process) But that just shows how much you appreciate their talent and how much they like this kind of film. You should have something, especially if they really like to work with you.'
'I should have something to offer,' he said.
The 'Kannathil Muthamittal' director feels he should have something substantial to offer to actors when they collaborate with him.
'I can't just take a film because they want to work with me. I should be able to give them something a little more or almost as good as what they've done before,' he said.
Co-written by Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam, 'Thug Life' is set to be released in theatres on June 5.
The film also features Trisha Krishnan, Sanya Malhotra, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, and Rohit Saraf. (ANI)

Unseen pics of Shefali Jariwala from her first marriage go viral. Late actress looked radiant in sindoor and red bangles

Shefali Jariwala's first marriage ended with serious allegations of abuse and unauthorized bank withdrawals by ex-husband Harmeet Singh. Their relationship ended on a troubling note, with serious allegations made by Shefali that highlighted the darker side of their time together. As per police records, she lodged an official complaint at Oshiwara Police Station in Mumbai, accusing Harmeet of subjecting her to both emotional and physical distress. She also alleged that he had withdrawn around Rs 12 lakh from their shared bank account without seeking her permission, further adding to the betrayal she felt in the relationship. During a candid conversation with Times Now in 2021, Shefali delved deeper into the emotional turmoil she experienced during her first marriage. Shefali's decision to walk away from her first marriage wasn't taken lightly. One of the key reasons she was able to take such a bold step was her financial independence. She acknowledged that in Indian society, divorce still carries stigma and is often seen as a taboo. However, her upbringing taught her to value personal happiness over societal expectations. She credited her courage to the unwavering support she received from her family and her firm belief in doing what feels right, regardless of judgment from also highlighted how economic freedom gave her the power to shape her own future. By not being financially dependent, she didn't have to stay trapped in an unhappy and unhealthy marriage. Her story underscores the importance of empowering oneself, emotionally and financially, especially in relationships that lack mutual respect or closing that difficult chapter, Shefali found love again and moved forward. She eventually married actor Parag Tyagi, known for his role in the television series 'Brahmarakshas'. Her journey from emotional trauma to personal empowerment serves as an inspiring example of resilience, strength, and the value of standing up for oneself, even when society makes it difficult.

Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai's Rahul Sharma Opens Up About Challenges In TV Industry

Last Updated: Rahul Sharma highlighted how one of the toughest parts of being an actor today is staying mentally steady. Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai has been one of Indian television's most loved and longest-running shows. In May this year, the daily soap took a seven-year leap and brought in new characters and twists to keep the audience hooked. One of the fresh faces to join the cast was actor Rahul Sharma, who plays Anshuman in the show. His performance made him a fan favourite. In a recent interview, the actor opened up about the mental and emotional pressure that comes with being part of television. He highlighted how one of the toughest parts of being an actor today is staying mentally steady. 'People often talk about the hustle in acting. But for me, it's not the actual work—that I love—it's the uncertainty that's the real hustle. Sometimes, there's a lot of work; other times, there are long dry spells. Managing that unpredictability, staying mentally balanced through those gaps—that's where the real challenge lies. And that uncertainty doesn't really go away, even with success," he said in an interview with the news agency IANS. Rahul further explained that when you start earning well, your responsibilities and lifestyle also grow. 'You're never truly sure when the next project will come or if it will match the last one creatively or financially. That's just how this industry is – it's complex, it's unstable, and you have to make peace with that ambiguity," he added. Rahul also shared that working in television never really gets easier. Every new role comes with its own set of challenges. 'You might assume that with time and experience, it gets easier to slip into emotions. And yes, you do understand your emotional process better. But every role still brings a new layer, a new lens. The same situation, a loss, anger, or joy, can feel entirely different depending on the character you're playing," he said. The actor also said that many people think acting gets easier with time, but that is not really true. Even if you get used to the process, the emotional effort is always there. 'The emotion is never the same twice. Some characters require you to go really deep, while others are more surface-level. But every time, it's a fresh journey. So no, I wouldn't say it ever gets easy. It's a new challenge every time," he said. Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, produced by Rajan Shahi under the banner of Director's Kut Production, stars Rohit Purohit and Samridhii Shukla in the lead roles. First Published:
