Centennial rocket cleared for National Security Space Launch missions

DENVER (KDVR) — A rocket developer in Centennial has been approved by the United States Space Force to partake in National Security Space Launch missions.
The United Launch Alliance created its Vulcan rocket after years of development. After two successful certification missions, the rocket has passed its comprehensive certification plan and is now officially certified by Space Force, according to a press release from the alliance.

'Thank you to all our customer partners who have worked hand-in-hand with us throughout this comprehensive certification process. We are grateful for the collaboration and excited to reach this critical milestone in Vulcan development,' said Tory Bruno, ULA's president and CEO in the release. 'Vulcan is uniquely designed to meet the challenging requirements demanded by an expanding spectrum of missions for U.S. national security space launches.'
In September of 2016, ULA entered into an agreement with the United States Air Force, who made an outline of how the Vulcan would have to perform in the Air Force's New Entrant Certification Guide.
From then until now, the Vulcan has undergone and completed 52 certification criteria, including:
180 'discrete tasks'
Two certification flight demonstrations
60 payload interface requirement verfications
18 subsystem design and test reviews
114 hardware and software audits
'The SSC and ULA teams have worked together extremely closely, and certification of this launch system is a direct result of their focus, dedication and teamwork,' said Gen Panzenhagen, Program Executive Officer for Assured Access to Space.
The Vulcan possesses the world's highest-performing upper stage, according to the release, which extends ULA's industry-leading legacy of precision.
The Centaur V is flexible and durable, allowing it to perform complex orbital insertions. The capabilities of the technology allow large NSSL spacecraft to have direct injection into Geosynchronous Orbit.
ULA said it is a critical requirement supporting the country facing evolving threats.
The Vulcan rocket is available in four different variations that include the zero, two, four or six solid boosters. The boosters are powered by BE-4 engines, which ULA said are the most powerful liquified natural gas-fueled oxygen-rich staged combustion engine ever flown.

The booster engines can produce 550,000 pounds of thrust. The American-made engines also ended the use of Russia's RD-180 engine.

Taking on the role of Spock is like stepping into sci-fi royalty. When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds launched in 2022, it didn't just revive a classic era of Trek, it brought back characters who've been etched into the pop culture DNA for decades. Chief among them: the ever-logical, ever-iconic Spock. Leonard Nimoy's original performance is untouchable for many fans. So when Ethan Peck inherited the role, expectations were sky-high. But instead of trying to mimic Nimoy, Peck leaned into something different, something more human, more uncertain, and surprisingly… funny. At the recent Tribeca Film Festival premiere for Strange New Worlds Season 3, Peck spoke about what distinguishes his take on the beloved Vulcan, telling /Film: "I would say that they've really brought a comedic quality to the Spock that I play in Strange New Worlds. I think they found that I might have an aptitude for him in kind of uncomfortable situations. 'And I think the writer just tries to put me as the actor playing Spock in uncomfortable situations, which I think is a great device and gimmick. So maybe that — they know that I kind of understand why he's finding himself [in these situations]. So, maybe his comedic nature ... and that he's not [self-aware] about it." It's a interesting evolution. Where Nimoy's Spock delivered humor through dry logic and razor-sharp timing, Peck's Spock is funnier because he's awkward, still learning how to navigate the push and pull between his Vulcan discipline and human emotion. And that's exactly the point, according to series co-creator Akiva Goldsman, who also weighed in, saying: "I think that those of us who started with TOS have an association with the most logical time in Spock's life. But if you think about Spock, not just in TOS and before [Strange New Worlds], if you think about Spock, as he carries through the motion pictures, as he carries through the end of [The Next Generation], we start to see that actually his whole life has been a struggle with identity. 'And how he sees himself and the sweet treachery of emotion. And so Ethan gets to do a lot more of that. So, we fill out the personality of Spock and his life's journey." It's a fun creative choice to show us a Spock in transition. One who hasn't yet mastered his inner conflict, and this season, according to those who've seen the premiere, digs even deeper into that tension, with some standout moments that test both Spock's emotional limits and Peck's range. While the series is set to conclude with Season 5, there's still plenty of story left to tell. And if Season 3 is any indication, Peck's Spock is only becoming more complex and more compelling as he edges closer to the version we all grew up with. Space Force command shifts on the Space Coast

The Space Force officer in charge of overseeing each launch on the Space Coast has changed hands. Brig. Gen. Kristin Panzenhagen handed off some of her duties, including the roles of commander for Space Launch Delta 45 and director of the Eastern Range, to Space Force Col. Brian Chatman. The change of command ceremony took place on June 26 with Lt. Gen. Philip Garrant, the head of Space Systems Command, overseeing the traditional passing of the guidon, a symbolic pennant, that ended Panzenhagen's run as the leader of Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. She came to the Space Coast in June 2023 while also taking on the roles of executive officer for the Space Force's Assured Access to Space program and director of launch and range operations for Space Systems Command out of Patrick SFB. She filled the boots of Maj. Gen. Stephen Purdy, who had been in those roles from 2021-2023, including leading the two facilities' transition from the Air Force to the Space Force. Panzenhagen finished up overseeing 2023's record launch year of 72 missions, only to top that with the 93 flown in 2024. Through July 2, the Space Coast has seen 58 launches from either Kennedy Space Center or Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, on track to break 100 before the end of the year. At the beginning of the year, Panzenhagen said the Space Force was prepped to support 13 launches a month if need be, or 156 for the year, although that pace was not realized. Chatman's most recent posting has been that of deputy director for the Space Systems Engineering Directorate for the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration. "As the SLD 45 commander, he runs the world's busiest spaceport and is responsible for delivering infrastructure, operations, and support for all Eastern Range launch and test missions," reads his official Space Force bio. "As Director of the Eastern Range, he is responsible for the safety of launch and test operations across a 15-million-square-mile area." He received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. "His primary duties have included special operations intelligence, aircraft and space systems acquisition program management, space operations, and as an operational liaison between the intelligence community, the special operations community, and Air Force and Space Force acquisition communities," his bio reads. His experience includes assignments with the National Reconnaissance Office, Space Systems Center, and the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, where he ran a $1.2 billion program of 15 top national priority classified programs and directed more than 500 government and contractor personnel. He also previously served as the deputy commander of the 30th Operations Group at Vandenberg Air Force Base, which included space operations on the Western Range.
