Guilt, ambition and a ponytail: Australian dancer makes the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader squad
Before being handed her pair of white boots and star-embroidered vest for a spot in one of the world's most coveted cheerleading squads, the 22-year-old from Perth was booking dance gigs on cruise ships.
Speaking from her new bedroom in Dallas, Ward recalls watching the first season of Netflix's docuseries America's Sweethearts from a cruise bunk bed, dreaming about one day being part of the squad.
'I don't think I will ever fully process the fact that I'm a DCC. It feels like a dream, and I'm still waiting to wake up from it,' Ward told this masthead.
Thousands auditioned for one of six rookie spots offered this year – the smallest intake in history, according to Ward, who was born in New Zealand but raised in Western Australia. She becomes the third Australian and first New Zealander to do so.
After auditioning, Ward battled through a gruelling training camp, watching new friends – who had trained their whole lives for a spot in the squad – get sent home each day.
'I almost felt like, do I belong in this position?' she said. 'Because this has been just as much my dream as it probably was theirs, but they have thought about this since the day they could walk.'
'Some of these girls would give their right arm to be here. So would I – I have worked just as hard … even though from the get-go, it wasn't like 'I want to be a DCC'. I wanted to make it in the dance world and do something that makes me happy. This happened to be it.

Aussie singer G Flip and US star Chrishell Stause marry for the fourth time in medieval-themed wedding
Australian singer G Flip and US star Chrishell Stause have celebrated saying 'I do' for the fourth time with a medieval-themed wedding. G Flip, who uses they/them pronouns, and the Selling Sunset star renewed their vows on Saturday in Los Angeles. The couple rented out a castle in the Hollywood Hills for the occasion, TMZ reported. For the ceremony, Stause wore a white off-the-shoulder gown with a lace corset, while G Flip was dressed in a red tunic with a sword on their back. Stause shared photos from the wedding on her Instagram stories, including the invitation. 'By royal decree, we request the honor of your noble presence to witness the wedding ceremony of Lord Flipo & Lady Stause,' it read. 'Lord Flipo & Lady Stause bid thee join in revelry and royal delight. 'Attire: Medieval, Renaissance, Regal and Festive attire encouraged. RSVP with haste.' Stause shared behind-the-scenes details from her big day, revealing that she'd written her vows on a scroll made from dipping paper into a pan with brown liquid. Two knights dressed in full costume also attended the ceremony, along with celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton. Stause and G Flip first met at a Halloween party in October 2021. G Flip then enlisted Stause to feature in their music video for Get Me Outta Here. Stause confirmed her relationship with the Australian musician in May 2022, during Selling Sunset's reunion episode. In July 2022, Stause and G Flip secretly tied the knot in Las Vegas in July 2022. They then renewed their vows a year later in a ceremony in Palm Springs in July 2023. In July 2024, the couple held a third ceremony in Melbourne while they were in Australia celebrating Stause's 43rd birthday. Speaking to Us weekly in May, G Flip revealed they have a goal to wed Stause every year. 'I think it's really healthy and it's good to update your vows every year. I think all couples should do it,' G Flip said. 'I reckon it makes you stronger, looking your person in the eyes and promising them new things every year.' Strause added: 'We normally plan it a week out, so it's super last-minute and then it's more spontaneous. 'We don't ever want to take the fun out of it, so it becomes a chore. Outback Wrangler Matt Wright pleads not guilty over fatal NT chopper crash
Outback Wrangler's Matt Wright has pleaded not guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice more than three years after a fatal helicopter crash. The reality TV star was charged following the crash that killed co-star Chris 'Willow' Wilson in February 2022. Wearing a light blue shirt and blue jeans, Wright appeared calm when he fronted the Supreme Court in Darwin on Monday. He entered not guilty pleas for three counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice when he was arraigned, kissing his wife during an adjournment. The 2022 crash in remote West Arnhem Land killed Wilson, with pilot Sebastian Robinson also seriously injured. The trial is scheduled to begin on Wednesday and is expected to take four weeks. The trial will hear from about 25 witnesses. Wright rose to fame starring in National Geographic's Outback Wrangler and Netflix series Wild Croc Territory.
