Suburban breweries on tap at Chicago Auto Show ‘Flights' event
Among the nearly two dozen brewers showcased at 'Friday Night Flights' last Friday night, several were on tap representing the suburbs. The Auto Show ran from Feb. 8 to Feb. 17 at McCormick Place.
From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Valentine's Day, attendees sampled a variety of new and popular brews for an additional cost. The brewers, including the ones from the suburbs, brought unique flavors to a wider audience.
Alter Brewing
Returning for its third year, Alter Brewing poured its Ambigram Hazy IPA, a brew featuring Mosaic, Citra, and Idaho 7 hops. Fruity and floral, it balances the hazy IPA trend without being overly bitter, owners describe the drink.
With its main brewery in Downers Grove and additional restaurant locations in Oak Brook and St. Charles, Alter Brewing is approaching its 10-year anniversary.
'It's great to be a part of this,' Dustin Clay, operations manager, said about Friday Night Flights at the Auto Show. 'Seeing people who don't necessarily visit our brewery every day really helps get our name out.'
Double Clutch Brewing Company
Evanston-based Double Clutch Brewing Company showcased Little Juice Coupe, its first hazy IPA. Known for its German-style beers, owners say the brewery stepped outside its usual range with this citrus-forward offering.
Since opening in 2021, Double Clutch has earned multiple awards, including silver medals for its Altbier and Helles Lager at the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup. The brewery's 12,000-square-foot space doubles as an event venue featuring rotating classic car displays, according to owners.
Noon Whistle Brewing
Noon Whistle Brewing, with locations in Lombard and Naperville, poured its flagship hazy IPA, Gummylicious, a beer packed with citrus hops. Launched in 2023, it has become the brewery's top-selling beer, according to owners.
'We designed this to be easy-drinking yet full of juicy, tropical haze,' said Mike Condon, co-founder.
The brewery, which first opened in Lombard in 2014 and expanded to Naperville in 2020, recently redesigned its packaging to feature bold colors for greater shelf appeal.
Sketchbook Brewing Company
Making its Chicago Friday Night Flights debut, Sketchbook Brewing Company presented Orange Door IPA, a double dry-hopped brew that has been a company staple for over a decade, owners say. Despite its name, the beer contains no orange, instead drawing citrus notes from its blend of three different hops.
Sketchbook's abstract can designs reflect its emphasis on beer as an art form.
'We believe beer and art intersect, and we try to showcase that on our cans,' said Michael Sotut, who represented the brewery at the event.
With 18 styles available at its Skokie and Evanston taprooms, owners say Sketchbook fosters a community-driven atmosphere, even opting for TV-free spaces to encourage conversation.
Tighthead Brewing Company
Also making its first Chicago Friday Night Flights appearance, Tighthead Brewing Company featured its Scarlet > Fire Red Ale, a gold medal winner at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival.
'This is a traditional red ale — roasty with light coffee notes and an easy-drinking profile,' said Scott Dykyj, sales representative. 'We're the only red ale here, which sets us apart.'
Now in its 14th year, Tighthead operates a taproom in Mundelein with 18 beers on tap and around 10 available in the market.
'The event combines the auto show's excitement with the energy of a beer fest, making it a great experience,' Dykyj said.

How Miami's airport and seaport are working to get you fresher fruit and flowers
Miami International Airport is boosting cargo capacity by as much as 50% with a new facility that broke ground on Monday, a sign of its expanding role in providing fresh fish, fruit and flowers to consumers across the East Coast. The $141 million joint initiative with PortMiami will transform vacant land southwest of the airport at Northwest 74th Avenue and 12th Street. Slated to open in 2027, the 340,000-square-foot cold storage complex, about the size of six NFL fields, will allow more fresh produce and other perishables to enter the U.S. through Miami. Hollywood-based Mandich Group, a privately held cold storage development firm, is putting in $98.5 million and the PortMiami will contribute $9 million. The port will also provide $33.5 million it obtained from a U.S. Department of Transportation grant. 'It will be the first center of its kind in the state of Florida and the largest in the U.S.,' PortMiami spokesperson Suzy Trutie said in an interview with the Miami Herald. The airport and seaport receive lots of perishables. PortMiami puts them on trucks and sends them to MIA for storage and treatment before they're further transported. The new building will allow them to do more of that. 'For us, it's a way to expand our cargo business and trade,' Trutie said. The new center has the capacity to handle over 1.5 million tons of agricultural cargo annually, Greg Chin, communications director for Miami-Date Aviation Department, told the Herald. That's half the 3 million tons the airport received in 2024. Booming Valentine's Day MIA is growing, not just in passenger volume, but in freight, and it seeks to keep up with rising demand. The amount of cargo it handled in 2024 was a record for the fifth straight year. That included the vast majority of fresh-cut flowers the U.S. imports for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day. By Valentine's Day 2025, airport officials estimated that more than 90,000 tons of fresh-cut flowers arrived at the airport. That was also a new record for MIA, 3% higher than the previous record set in 2023. It totaled about $400 million in value. Fed Ex Private companies have taken notice. MIA is the site of FedEx's largest 'cold chain operation' worldwide, Basil Khalil, vice president of operations for FedEx Caribbean and Central America, told the Herald in February. About three years ago, the shipping company made a big bet on Miami by doubling the size of its cargo facility at MIA, said the Miami-based executive. That brought it to over 280,000 square feet. FedEx has more than 500 employees at the site. 'The flower industry helps employ thousands of people in Colombia and here at MIA,' Khalil said. It's not only during Valentine's Day that bouquets come in. Several hundred airport, seaports and border crossings handle international trade, yet MIA stands out. In 2024, the U.S. imported $2.26 billion in fresh-cut flowers, an increase in value of 9% compared to 2023, according to data provided by Ken Roberts, founder and CEO of WorldCity, a data and media company that hosts the website. MIA handled a whopping 81% of that. Colombian carrier Avianca Cargo and LATAM Cargo both have robust operations at MIA. DHL Express is growing, too. MIA has other works in progress for boosting cargo capacity. In July 2024, the Miami-Dade County Commission approved a lease agreement with Miami Gateway Partners, LLC, to build a four-story cargo facility that would increase Miami International Airport's storage capacity by 2 million tons. PortMiami PortMiami is growing its cargo business as well. It traded with 149 nations and handled about 10 million tons of freight in 2024. The space that broke ground on Monday — drawing officials including Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart and Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava — more directly benefits perishables. The complex will include a cold chain processing facility that provides cold storage, warehousing, distribution and other services for perishable goods. When the facility is complete, it will increase temperature-controlled storage space at MIA by as much as 34%, to 521,000 square feet, Chin said. The cold storage area will cover about 80% of the new space. The remaining 20% will be a new area to eradicate pests from refrigerated cargo containers and air cargo pallets. That treatment area will utilize non-chemical 'advanced treatments and inspection capabilities' to speed up inspections of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other plant-based perishable items, said Trutie, the PortMiami spokesperson. This will mark a change from the chemical treatment used today. The Norcross, Georgia-based company Reveam will be brought in, providing a new pasteurization technology for fresh produce it developed that doesn't use chemicals or heat, but electrons. The treatments are certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and meant to expedite inspections for 'invasive pests and diseases that threaten U.S. agriculture.' The new cold storage complex is expected to result in 200 new jobs. It'll have environmental benefits too: The early pest and disease detection will help preserve native ecosystems. And 'it's going to reduce spoilage and inspection delays,' Levine Cava said at the ceremony on Monday.

World Chocolate Day: The EU is celebrating with sky-high prices
Cocoa and powdered chocolate prices jumped by more than 16% in the EU in May 2025 compared to the previous year. Prices in the bloc of 27 countries have been gradually increasing for the last 12 months, with annual 'cocoa inflation' going from 6.3% to 16.2%, according to Eurostat. One of the major reasons behind this is that there has been a surge in the prices of cocoa beans, the main ingredient in chocolate, over the past two years. This was coupled with increases in the cost of sugar and energy. The EU is entirely reliant on cocoa imports and accounts for more than half of the imports worldwide. The majority of the crop that is exported to the EU is grown in West Africa, where the harvest was hit by bad weather in the most important cocoa-producing regions, such as Ghana and Ivory Coast. 'Cocoa prices have almost tripled compared to the level two years ago,' Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, told Euronews Business, adding that 'prices raced to record levels last year and have seen volatile patterns of trading over the past few months'. While prices have eased from peaks above $12,000 per tonne, they remain elevated in both the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) and the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) in London. Concerns over the cocoa supply have eased a little from their peak in May 2025, to the beginning of July. 'Chocolate lovers will be relieved to hear that cocoa prices have fallen to an eight-month low in recent days and London futures today are a whopping 42% below where they were at the start of the year,' said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell. London Cocoa Futures were around £5,310 ($7,236) per metric tonne on Monday, more than twice the price it was exactly two years ago. She said that, 'the fact that consumers have been willing to keep stumping up for chocolate even as prices surged has tempted growers to invest in the crop, and the supply outlook has been improving,' which explained the declining prices. However, due to climate change-related risks, including diseases like black pod, which have been exacerbated, 'some plantations have ageing treeor mays, and the trade uncertainty created by Donald Trump's tariffs has only deepened that uncertainty which is expected to limit any downside when it comes to cocoa prices,' Danni added. Related Soaring cocoa prices prove a costly treat for Valentine's Day lovers Resellers mark up 'Dubai chocolate' as TikTok feeds sweet treat craze As bakeries across the continent struggle to grapple with the price increase of this essential ingredient, cocoa prices in the EU and the UK are not expected to fall substantially any time soon, according to a recent report by UK-based strategic consultancy Foresight Transitions. Global prices of cocoa beans are having a major impact on the continent's cost of chocolate. The EU's chocolate consumption is the highest in the world and the bloc is entirely reliant on cocoa imports, mainly from countries in West Africa, where the cocoa harvest is highly exposed to climate or biodiversity-related risks. According to the report, escalating cocoa prices cost European jobs too, citing the world's largest chocolate producer, Barry Callebaut, having laid off almost 20% of workers, a third of which are based in the EU, due to the rising cost of cocoa. 'The rise in the cost of cocoa, which is such a crucial ingredient, is causing a big headache for chocolate manufacturers, given that they are also having to cope with absorbing higher energy costs and wage growth,' said Streeter about the UK market. In May 2025, inflation was accompanied by a record jump in chocolate prices and the cost of chocolate was 17.7% higher than a year previously, according to ONS. 'The outlook for prices ahead remains volatile, given that unpredictable weather patterns affecting cocoa farmers, including droughts and extreme rainfall, is likely to continue longer-term,' Streeter said.
