Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday reminded the US of Pakistan's role in sheltering Osama bin Laden, saying he hoped Washington used the meeting between Donald Trump and Pakistan's Army General Asim Munir to tell Islamabad not to support terrorism.The Congress MP made the remark in response to a question from reporters here about Trump's lunch meeting with General Munir.Tharoor said he hoped that during the interaction, the United States had reminded Pakistan of the importance of not supporting terrorism or providing safe havens to terrorists, and of not enabling, guiding, training, arming, financing, equipping or sending terrorists into India.He said this message was conveyed to the Pakistani delegation by some of the American Senators and Congressmen and hoped that everyone in the US government would do the same.Tharoor, who recently led a delegation of Indian parliamentarians to the US and a few other countries to talk about India's response to terrorism in the wake of the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, said the US could not have forgotten the episode of Al-Qaeda founder Osama Bin Laden so quickly."Osama Bin Laden killed over 2,000 people in the 9/11 attacks. He destroyed two iconic American buildings. So, in these circumstances, Pakistan's culpability in hiding this man, until he was finally found in a safe house near an army camp in a cantonment city, is something that cannot be easily forgotten by the Americans," the Congress leader said.On being asked by reporters as to why the US President did not meet the Indian delegation, but met the Pakistani General, Tharoor said that the Indian delegates were received by Vice President J D Vance which was a "significant honour".Usually, Parliamentary delegates are met by senior officials, like Deputy Secretaries of State, he said.He also pointed out that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met with Trump much earlier."We gave exactly the same message that the PM gave to the US President and our message was received without any demur, disagreement or argument by the Vice President and the Deputy Secretary of State," he said.On the alleged mediation by the US to end the India-Pakistan conflict, Tharoor said that India never needed any persuading to stop as it had made it clear that if Pakistan stopped, so would it."If there was any pressure from President Trump, it would only have been on Pakistan. When Pakistan offered to stop, we stopped. So, there was no requirement for any mediation or any pressure on us," he said.Tharoor also termed as "grave" the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, saying both the nations were longtime friends of India which would ideally prefer there be peace between the two countries.Tharoor said that presently the matter was "not in our hands" and all that India can do is observe with "attention and concern" what is going on there."Our concerns remain, of course, for the well being of the people there as well as the safety and security of our own citizens," he said.The Congress MP also said a number of Indian students have been evacuated from Iran to neighbouring countries and that he was sure the Indian government was closely following what was happening in West Asia.

CM calls to remove ‘secular' & ‘socialist' from Preamble
Guwahati: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the state govt will request the Centre to delete the words "socialist" and "secular" from the Preamble of the Constitution as "these words are legacies of the Emergency" and those represent the Western concept contrary to Indian thought. The original Preamble, adopted on Nov 26, 1949, declared India as a "Sovereign Democratic Republic". The words "socialist" and "secular" were added through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment during the Emergency in 1976. During an event at BJP headquarters in Guwahati, after launching a book on Emergency, "The Emergency Diary" — a collection of first-person anecdotes from associates who worked with Narendra Modi during his time as an RSS pracharak — Sarma said it was not a result of any national or international crisis but a calculated political conspiracy by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi solely to protect her position. He emphasised that Indira Gandhi not only violated democratic principles but also undermined the very spirit of the Constitution by amending its Preamble, inserting the words 'socialist' and 'secular'. "The word secularism is not conceived in Indian context. Our concept is Sarva Dharma Sambhav — equal respect for all religions which is not neutral but positively aligned. We are a spiritual nation. The West concept is neutral. If we are neutral we cannot work for satras, temples and namghars. We cannot discuss Gita or the Vedas," he said. He added, "How can Himanta Biswa Sarma be secular? I am a hardcore Hindu. Smillary, how can a Muslim person be secular. He is a hardcore Muslim person." Sarma further said similarly socialism was never the economic concept of India. "Our concept was always antodoya (uplift of the marginalised) and sarvodaya (welfare of all). Therefore, the Government of India must remove the words 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Preamble and restore it to its original form as envisioned by the Constitution's architects, including Dr BR Ambedkar," Sarma said. "The way Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working to wipe out the legacy of colonial India, the same way we should try to wipe out the legacy of Emergency. Two important legacy of the emergency is insertion of the word secular and socialist in our constitution, which should be deleted," he said. Sarma said the Emergency remains a grim reminder of how fragile democracy can become if power is abused and stressed that such circumstances must never be allowed to recur in the future.

237 foreign nationals have been deported to their countries, Tamil Nadu government tells Madras High Court
The State government has informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that from 2022 to May 25, 2025, 237 foreign nationals have been deported to their countries. In a counter affidavit, Superintendent of Police, Security Branch CID, Chennai, N. Stephen Jesubatham, on behalf of the Director-General of Police, submitted that during this period, 66 cases were registered against 188 foreign nationals who were found to be overstaying in Tamil Nadu. Additionally, 14 cases were registered against 31 African nationals for transporting drugs and 65 cases were registered against 280 foreign nationals for other offences. According to the Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home Affairs, there are 17,770 foreigners overstaying in Tamil Nadu since 2011 (as on May 25, 2025). Several of them, who landed in Tamil Nadu, have travelled to other States. The Tamil Nadu Police and the Bureau of Immigration are taking regular efforts to trace these foreigners. Following the Pahalgam attack, the Under Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, has issued orders with regard to revocation of visas of Pakistani nationals. As per the order, all existing valid visas, except medical, long-term, diplomatic and officials visas, issued to Pakistani nationals stands revoked. Medical visa was valid till April 29. A total of 40 Pakistani nationals were reportedly staying in Tamil Nadu, of which 16 were granted long-term visas and 24 have applied for long-term visa extension. They are on valid stay as per the order of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Revised procedure A total of 95 Rohingyas (Myanmar nationals) were staying in the State. The Ministry has issued a revised procedure for the deportation of illegal Bangladeshi nationals/Rohingyas (Myanmar nationals). To restrict the movement of illegal/overstaying foreigners, one Special camp was functioning in Tiruchi. At present, 151 foreigners have been accommodated in Tiruchi Special Camp. Anticipating space constraints, the government has issued a G.O. re-notifying Cheyyar Special Camp in Tiruvannamalai district to accommodate foreign nationals till the disposal of the cases against them and deportation under the Foreigners Act. Bangladeshi nationals who stayed illegally have been arrested across the State and have been lodged in the Puzhal Central Prison. If they come out on bail, they will be lodged in special camps till their deportation. Commissioners of Police in cities and Superintendent of Police in districts who are the Foreigners Registration Officers (FRO) have been instructed to regularly locate, identify and physically verify overstaying foreigners in their jurisdiction and to regularise their stay or deport them. They were also instructed to ensure details are updated properly and defaulters are dealt with under relevant Acts/Rules. As per the directions of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, FROs in cities/districts have nominated a DSP level officer as nodal officer for Foreigners Identification Portal (FIP) to monitor foreigners. If foreigners are arrested, proposals are initiated by FROs for their deportation under the Foreigners Act. The State government will issue deportation orders after arranging travel documents to the foreigner, if required, in consultation with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs. The authorities were monitoring the foreigners and if they indulge in any illegal activities, appropriate action will be initiated including to deport them, it was submitted. A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and A.D. Maria Clete directed the Central government to file its counter affidavit in three weeks and posted the matter for hearing after three weeks. The court was hearing the public interest litigation petition filed by K.K. Ramesh of Madurai who sought a direction to the authorities to take immediate action against foreign nationals who were staying in India even after the expiry of their visa.
