'He's been raised on watching tape,' Sark explains Week 1 game planning for Arch Manning
Putting the Week 1 game plan together must be one of the toughest jobs of the year for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian. There is the unknown of new quarterback Arch Manning's first start. There's his reaction to the hostile crowd at Ohio State's famous Horseshoe. There's a new defensive coordinator for the Buckeyes. Sark talked about the challenges on Fox Sports' the Herd with Colin Cowherd Thursday. The biggest challenge might be figuring out what new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia might do. The longtime DC during the New England Patriots dynasty and former Detroit Lions head coach will bring a new scheme to Columbus. "We're going against a really good defensive coordinator in Matt Patricia, which I don't think people are talking a whole lot about." - Texas coach Steve Sarkisian with Colin Cowherd "Putting a plan together that we feel good about also gives Arch a little bit of freedom to get us in and out of some things that as looks present themselves in the game, because there's so many unknowns, I think is going to be critical. And he's more than capable of doing that. You know, the guy's been raised watching tape of Eli, Peyton, his dad and his grandpa. We're going to feel good about that. And he's got great composure and he's been in some fires with us already. So we'll feel good about it." The environment and assignment will be tough enough. But they also want Manning to get a taste of checking out of a look at big moments. "Do we want to major in him having to audible on the road? That's a dangerous thing to do on the road. But we're going to give him the opportunity to do those things, especially in some critical moments." - Texas coach Steve Sarkisian with Colin Cowherd Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @LonghornsWire. Jesse Chavez retires a week after getting DFA'd by Braves
Jesse Chavez is calling it quits. The 41-year-old right-hander announced his retirement from baseball after 18 big league seasons during an appearance on 'Foul Territory' on Thursday. 'As of now, I don't think we're going to keep going,' Chavez said. 'I think this is it. Time to turn the page and focus on the next chapter of life.' Atlanta Braves pitcher Jesse Chavez throws to an Athletics batter during the second inning of a baseball game on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, in West Sacramento, Calif. AP Chavez's retirement comes two weeks after he was designated for assignment by the Braves. Over his long career, Chavez played for nine teams, including three stints in Atlanta, two with the Blue Jays, Angels, Rangers and Cubs, in addition to stops with the Pirates, Royals, A's and Dodgers. Chavez made 657 appearances (85 starts) over his career, posting a 51-66 record with nine saves, 76 holds and a 4.27 ERA after being drafted in the 42nd round in the 2002 MLB Draft by Texas. In 2021, Chavez had a 0.00 ERA in seven postseason outings for the Braves en route to a World Series title. Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Jesse Chavez works against the Texas Rangers during the first inning of a baseball game Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, in Arlington, Texas. AP Chavez appeared in just four games this season with the Braves, allowing eight earned runs over eight innings before being let go. He was traded 10 times over his career and is believed to be the most-dealt player in big league history. 'This has been a great ride. Way more than I expected for a 42nd-round draft pick,' Chavez said. 'I was given a gift. I understood that. It was, 'How can I make it last? 'How can I keep it going for this long?''
