Food has long been a powerful connector of cultures, communities and cravings. And in Dubai - a city known for pushing the boundaries of luxury and indulgence - food isn't just nourishment, it's a spectacle.
From gold-dusted cappuccinos to oversized milkshakes, the Emirate has firmly cemented itself as the global capital of culinary extravagance.
The latest creation to stir online frenzy? A chocolate burger so outrageous it's splitting the internet in half.
The so-called "Dubai Chocolate Burger" has gone viral, first appearing in an Instagram reel that has since amassed thousands of views and sparked heated debate across social media.
Created by B Laban, a UAE-based dessert chain renowned for its bold, Middle Eastern-inspired sweets, the burger is unlike anything seen before.
What's in this sweet 'burger'? Forget beef patties and cheese - this dessert is built for the bold.
Sandwiched between two halves of soft, golden English cake is a decadent combination of pistachio mousse (rich and nutty), crispy kunafa (adding a delicate crunch) and a Belgian chocolate brownie that's dense and fudgy.
To top it all off, the dessert is served with a warm container of flowing Belgian chocolate, allowing diners to drizzle or dip at will - depending on how far they want to take the indulgence.
At AED 30 (about R150), the burger is relatively affordable for Dubai's food scene.

Reactions to the dessert have been as layered as the treat itself. Some viewers were captivated by its indulgent appeal and artistic presentation.
"Why does it look so satisfying?" one Instagram user commented.
"Such an amazing experience," wrote another.
"I want to try this at least once in my life."
However, others weren't so easily convinced. Critics questioned its health implications and extreme sugar levels.
"Nooooo!!! Too much!" exclaimed a viewer.
"One word: diabetes," one user joked.
Another wrote, "Add insulin to that burger."
Beyond the chocolate burger, Dubai's dessert obsession is going global - thanks to another viral treat. A milk chocolate bar stuffed with pistachio cream, tahini, and crispy kadayif has taken TikTok and Instagram by storm over the past year.
Dubbed 'Dubai chocolate' by fans, this layered sweet has become a must-try for content creators, dessert shops and online candy resellers.
However, the hype came crashing down recently due to serious food safety concerns.
On July 14, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and World Market issued a recall for a product called Spread Pistachio Cacao Cream with Kadayif, manufactured by Turkish company Emek Gıda. The cause? Potential Salmonella contamination.
The affected product, prominently labelled 'Dubai' and sold at World Market, closely mirrors the viral chocolate bar in its ingredients: milk chocolate, pistachio-tahini cream and shredded filo pastry.
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture conducted testing as part of an investigation into imported pistachio spread products. Their findings confirmed Salmonella in product samples, prompting the recall.
That's not the only issue. In the UK, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued an urgent recall for the Noesis Schokolade Love of Dubai bar, not for contamination, but because it contained undeclared peanuts - a severe allergy risk for consumers.
Tempted or terrified, one thing's for sure: Dubai knows how to serve dessert - and drama - like no one else.

Old cuts, new cool

Image: Luke Kuisis In an industry long criticised for its wastefulness, Cape Town-based label Good Good Good continues to chart a refreshingly mindful path, one where fabric offcuts are not discarded but transformed. For Spring/Summer 2026, the brand expands its innovative zero-waste Strip-Stripe Capsule, breathing new life into leftover materials through meticulous craft and vibrant design. At the heart of this sustainable vision is Daniel Sher, the brand's founder and creative director. His journey began in 2016 when he joined his mother-in-law's manufacturing business, Together MFG, where he started producing clothing under his own label. In 2022, Sher relocated his production to a new facility after Together MFG was selected to manufacture Christian Dior's collaboration with Thebe Magugu — a significant milestone for South African fashion. Along with the move, Sher brought with him the machinery and offcuts collected over six years, an archive of remnants that now fuel the latest chapter of the Strip-Stripe story. For their Spring/Summer 2026 collection, Good Good Good unveiled a playful, patchwork-heavy series of T-shirts, hoodies, trousers, shorts and outerwear. Made from 100% South African-sourced cotton jersey, the collection bursts with colour and texture. But it's not just what's made, it's how it's made that sets it apart. Every piece is crafted slowly and intentionally: offcuts are selected by hand, cut into strips, sewn together two at a time, pressed flat, and then added to a growing patchwork. Once large enough, this reconstructed fabric is cut into panels and sewn into the brand's signature silhouettes. This method is not only rooted in sustainability: it celebrates the tactile beauty of imperfection, built on the ethos of repair, reuse and revival. Alongside the capsule collection, the brand also debuts its latest collaboration with Parisian footwear brand Calla. Founded by designer Calla Haynes in 2009, the brand gained acclaim for its refined-yet-relaxed aesthetic. After pausing her ready-to-wear line, Haynes launched 'The Boucharouite Project', partnering with female artisans in Morocco to repurpose textile waste from the luxury fashion industry into handcrafted rugs. For this collaboration, Good Good Good combed through 10 years' worth of fabric remnants, many designed by renowned South African textile artists, and shipped them to Marrakech. There, Haynes' artisan network wove the offcuts into colourful boucharouite-style rugs. These were then cut into panels and crafted into a limited run of eclectic babouche slippers, each pair unique, steeped in story and global connection. As sustainability shifts from a trend to a necessity, Good Good Good offers a compelling blueprint for the future of fashion — one that honours local craftsmanship, reimagines waste as raw material, and dares to find joy in every scrap.

Will Lady Eliza Spencer wear Diana's tiara on her wedding day?

Lady Eliza Spencer – the niece of the late Princess Diana – is engaged to South African businessman Channing Millerd. With her wedding planning in full swing, many want to know if the Cape Town-raised aristocrat will wear the Spencer Tiara worn by the late royal on her wedding day. Diana, the sister of Eliza's father, Earl Charles Spencer, married the then-Prince Charles of the British Royal Family in 1981. The former couple's high-profile divorce was finalised a year before her tragic death in a car crash in 1997. Charles is now king and is married to his alleged former mistress, Queen Camilla. Eliza Spencer's wedding will come hot on the heels of her twin sister Lady Amelia, who married in 2023, and her older sister Lady Kitty, who wed in 2021. Unlike Diana's two sisters, Lady Jane and Lady Sarah, who wore the Spencer Tiara on their wedding days, Eliza's sisters chose not to wear the diamond-encrusted family heirloom at their nuptials. Lady Eliza Spencer – the niece of the late Princess Diana – is engaged. Will she wear the Spencer Tiara on her wedding day? Many hope she will return to the family tradition. Images via Instagram: @elizavspencer According to reports, their decision to break with tradition varied from reports of the gesture eliciting 'painful memories' of Diana's death to claims of a strained family relationship. It's unclear if Lady Eliza Spencer will become the first in her immediate family to wear the pricey piece of jewellery. After Princess Diana died in 1997, the Spencer Tiara was returned to her brother, Earl Charles Spencer. It is not part of the British royal collection. Although Charles is the youngest member of the Spencer family, he is the only male, and thus heir to the earldom and the family's estate. Should Lady Eliza Spencer wear the tiara, she would be the second in her family to wear it since Princess Diana's death. In 2018, Diana's other niece, Celia McCorquodale – the daughter of her older sister Sarah – wore the tiara on her wedding day. A few years later, in 2022, the Spencer Tiara was displayed in London as part of Sotheby's Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee celebration. In its display description, Sotheby's claimed the tiara would be inherited by Diana's granddaughter, Charlotte, the daughter of her son, William. However, some royal experts claim that this is factually incorrect. Some have pointed to the fact that the tiara was simply loaned to Diana by her brother, Charles. It will likely be inherited by Charles's firstborn son and heir, Louis Spencer, Viscount Althorp. Like Charles, Louis will inherit the earldom.
