Australians send records – and competitors
On a dramatic day at the London Diamond League, Hull, the Paris Olympic silver medallist, again beat her own national record with a statement performance ahead of the world championships in Tokyo in September.
As in Paris, her effort was not enough to win; she came second in 4:13.68 behind Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay (4:11.88).
'I had a lot of distractions, but was just trying to zone into the leader in the second half, but it was a solid run,' Hull said.
'Coming in, we were thinking I could run a national record, and I did. I would have liked to have been a little closer to 4:10, but I felt very strong for 4:13.
'A lot of records fell today, so it was a pretty special to be a part of that race.'
Davies' emergence as a serious contender on the world stage continued when she smashed her own national and Oceanian 5000m records while finishing third in 14:31.45, wiping more than nine seconds off her previous record (14:40.83) set in China in April.

Former Australian BMX star Sam Willoughby and champion wife Alise celebrate arrival of first child
Former Australian BMX star Sam Willoughby and his world champion wife Alise have welcomed their first child into the world. The Olympic power couple announced the pregnancy in March and earlier this month revealed they would be having a boy. Beau Matthew Willoughby was born on July 14 after a lengthy labour. 'We couldn't be more in love with our little man,' the new parents wrote, announcing the arrival after a week. 'Longer birthing journey than we anticipated but excited to be home just in time for this Sunday's chequered flag as a family.' Sam tracked fellow rising BMX star Alise from the other side of the world when they were teenagers, with their Myspace messages progressing to a relationship in the US. Loading Instagram Post Sam became world champion for the first time in 2012 and months later won silver at the London Olympics. He won the 2014 world championship and made another Olympic final at Rio 2016, where Alise won silver for the United States. Just months later Sam was paralysed from the chest down from a training crash that also left him battling depression and an identity crisis. Sam underwent more than a year of gruelling recovery sessions before walking Alise down the aisle — with the help of knee braces — at their wedding on New Year's Eve in 2017. He then re-emerged on the BMX scene as a coach to Alise on her way to winning the 2019 world championship, while she also went on to win the 2024 title. Sam spoke of moving home to Adelaide after the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 but the couple have remained based in California.

Midwest Soccer Association: Chapman Athletic mark their third annual Think Mental Health Round
Round 9 of the Midwest Soccer Association had a reduced fixture list with the women's competition set to resume on Monday and one men's league match postponed. But what the round lacked in quantity, it made up for in quality — and heart. In the reserves, Abrolhos claimed a 4–1 win over Chapman Athletic in a match filled with passion. Regan Ford and Scotty Dewers were on target for Abrolhos, with two own goals completing their tally. Caleb Swart grabbed one for Chapman. Olympic's reserves continued their strong form, securing a 3–1 win over Rovers. Michael Wheeldon, Kaleb Warry, and Daniel Melling all found the net for Olympic, while Justin Lazenby scored the sole goal for Rovers. The men's league match between Olympic and Rovers saw Olympic storm home 5–0. Daniel Lennard led the charge with a brace, supported by goals from Dave Newton, Beau Bradley, and Chevy O'Brien. The Chapman versus Abrolhos men's league match was postponed and will now be played this Wednesday night under lights at Alexander Park. Off the field, Chapman Athletic marked their third annual Think Mental Health Round during the men's reserves match. 'Raising awareness for this cause is very close to our club's community, and having the players wear armbands with handwritten messages of advice, quotes and support showed their commitment to continue advocating for mental health,' said club representative Emma Streich. 'Football West has been very active in this in the metropolitan area, so for us to bring it to our regional town has been a collaborative effort.' The Midwest Soccer Association also confirmed that Geraldton will send two representative squads to the inaugural Football West Regional Senior Country Week. The men's team will be led by Frank Deluca, while the women's side will be coached by Vanessa Gould. With the women's league back in action from Monday and representative honours up for grabs, the season is heating up both on and off the pitch.
