Lawrence and Deegan on the cusp of motocross' next big rivalry

Jett Lawrence and Haiden Deegan have not faced each other on the track, aren't even in the same class, yet they hold the keys to the future of motocross.
Lawrence, the former breakdancer-turned-racer, has overpowered the 450cc class since moving up two years ago. Deegan, son of a freestyle motocross icon, has been tearing it up in the 250cc class this year.
Their dominance puts them on a collision course for the type of rivalry not seen in the sport since a young James Stewart started chasing down Ricky Carmichael in the mid-2000s.
'They have not lined up against each other even once and yet fans are champing at the bit in anticipation of that, which could come next year,' MX Sports Pro Racing President Davey Coombs said.
The rivalry has yet to blossom, at least on the track, but Lawrence has already taken on a similar path to Carmichael, widely considered the greatest motocross racer of all-time, and Deegan filling the role of the gifted up-and-comer like Stewart.
Lawrence is part of
a brother tandem
that's risen to the top of the motocross world all the way from their native Australia, joining Hunter in becoming the first siblings to go 1-2 at any motocross championship in last year's SuperMotocross run.
Jett won three 250cc championships before bumping up to 450s and immediately started dominating that class.
The 21-year-old joined Carmichael (2002 and 2004), and Stewart (2008) as the only riders to win every race of a motocross season, finishing 22 for 22 after capping his rookie season with the 2023 SuperMotocross championship. He also completed what's now being called the Jett Sweep by becoming the first rookie to sweep the motocross and supercross titles.
Lawrence had his 2024 motocross season limited by a thumb injury, yet came back to win a second straight SuperMotocross title. A torn ACL suffered in February cost him 13 Supercross races, but he was back on the bike within four months and picked up where he left off, taking a 51-point lead over his brother heading into this weekend's race in Millville, Minnesota.
'He has a Jordan-esque quality in that he's so talented, we run out of ways to describe him,' Coombs said.
Deegan's father, Brian, was one of the most decorated athletes in X Games history, an innovator who became a name brand by founding the Metal Mulisha clothing line.
Haiden Deegan was naturally drawn to motocross, opting for the racing route over the freestyle path his father blazed. The 19-year-old has already won two 250cc titles and is on his way to a third, leading by 38 points heading into this weekend's FXR Spring Creek National.
'I feel like this year in this offseason, I made like huge gains on my speed, where now I can run a crazy speed comfortable,' Deegan told reporters last month. 'So now, I literally just kind of take my time. I'd rather be smarter, then that speed's more natural to me now.'
Lawrence and Deegan are in position to follow the tire tracks of Carmichael and Stewart, yet with differing styles.
Lawrence is dominating like Carmichael did, but doing it with the flair and air of Stewart. Deegan is the up-and-comer like Stewart was, yet his riding style is similar to the overpowering Carmichael.
The Carmichael-Stewart rivalry turned out to be short lived; Carmichael retired two years after Stewart made his 450 debut.
The Lawrence-Deegan rivalry is just now budding, putting them in position to push the rising popularity of motocross racing into a new stratosphere.

Lakers star Luka Doncic's EuroBasket plans receive update

The post Lakers star Luka Doncic's EuroBasket plans receive update appeared first on ClutchPoints. Although he will soon be eligible to sign a lucrative contract extension, Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic is committed to representing his country at EuroBasket this summer. Doncic, whom the Lakers acquired in February from the Dallas Mavericks, may be in the United States over the next week or so, possibly even overlapping when he officially becomes eligible for his extension. But it won't be for long, according to longtime NBA insider Marc Stein. 'The Lakers' Luka Dončić, I'm told, is scheduled to return soon to the United States for a long-planned Jordan Brand promotional tour for his signature sneaker line,' Stein posted on X, formerly Twitter. 'He's expected to join Slovenia's national team in early August to begin EuroBasket preparations.' Doncic reportedly has not prioritized signing the extension, which he can do as soon as Aug. 2. ESPN reporter Tim McMahon said earlier this summer that he could see Doncic holding off on inking a new deal until after EuroBasket, which tracks with Doncic's past; he did not sign his extension with the Mavericks until Aug. 10, 2021, two days after the conclusion of basketball portion of the Summer Olympics, in which Doncic and Slovenia participated. If Doncic indeed does wait to sign his deal until after EuroBasket, that means mid-September would be the most realistic time for his signature to finally hit paper. The premier European national team event begins Aug. 27, with Slovenia starting the tournament the following day in Katowice, Poland. The group stage is split up between Katowice, Tampere, Finland, Riga, Latvia, and Limassol, Cyprus. The entirety of the subsequent 16-team elimination bracket will be hosted in Riga. The event is set to end on Sept. 14, a little over two weeks before the start of Lakers training camp. Although there has been some doubt that Doncic, who was blindsided by being traded earlier in the year, would re-sign with the Lakers, it does appear as if the Slovenian star will do so. If not, then LeBron James' reported anger over the Lakers' purported preferential treatment of Doncic would be all for nothing. It would also almost certainly prompt mass chaos in the L.A. front office, which traded Anthony Davis and Max Christie in the Doncic deal and has since added Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia this offseason. Colorado's Woodward Barn terrain park lets skiers, riders train all summer long

A Colorado terrain park is keeping skiers and riders who "send it" flying through the summer. Part trampoline park, part skate park, part ski jump, the Woodward Barn at Copper offers opportunities for skaters, skiers and riders of all ages to hone their craft without relying on snow. Impressive youngsters like Rhys Miller can be found there casually spinning and flipping their way around the barn, either on trampolines or actual ramps, riding what's called a "rollerboard," preparing for winter. "I've been working on under flips, sevens, backside, front side, and some switch flips," Rhys explained. "If it's one of the bigger tricks, I do get a little bit nervous, but on smaller tricks, I think I got it." Aside from building a list of tricks you might see in the XGames, Woodward Barn helps those young and old build up confidence, without the costly injuries that can come on the slopes if you hit a jump wrong, land on your head, or end up straddling a rail you were hoping to grind. Rhys, who took second place in the grommet boys halfpipe competition at the United States of America Freeski and Snowboard Association 2024 National Championships, knows from experience. He's getting back into his sport after breaking his leg recently. Now he's back in the barn, doing what he loves without fear. "You just do it," Rhys said to CBS Colorado, after being asked how he musters the courage to throw a big trick. He's now looking forward to his winter season, where he'll have even more tricks to take to the park. The Woodward Barn opened its doors in February 2009 with a 19,400-square-foot facility initially designed with Snowflex, a synthetic surface that mimicked the feel of snow. You might have seen other facilities with similar set-ups! Then in 2014, the Snowflex was replaced with Skatelite, a durable and smooth material commonly used in skateparks. This transition was accompanied by the introduction of specialized wheeled skis and snowboards with wheels embedded into the board itself, instead of sitting on top like a skateboard. This allows for a different, yet highly effective, training experience.

Broncos star rocks amazing Jordan cleats at training camp

Pat Surtain's shoes>>> Pat Surtain is officially an ambassador of the Jordan brand. Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton is the only coach in the NFL with an endorsement deal with Michael Jordan, and after Surtain won the Defensive Player of the Year award last season, Payton told his star cornerback it was time to get PS2 a Jordan deal of his own. Surtain officially joined the brand last month, just in time to rock some amazing cleats at training camp: 'I'm pretty excited," Surtain said Tuesday when asked about becoming a Jordan athlete. "It was a cool experience meeting 'M.J.' himself. It was pretty dope. I feel like that whole brand, what they have in order, is a very close group and the brand [has] a family-first aspect. I'm glad to be a part of the Jordan brand. I'm looking forward to it.' The cornerback still hasn't quite caught up to his coach's level yet. 'We're going to be competing on the field, even though I know he has the exclusive [Eddie] Jones [sneakers] already," Surtain quipped. "I still have some catching up to do.'
