India's most expensive film cost ₹835 crore, has VFX by an Oscar winner; not Kalki 2898 AD, RRR, Brahmastra, Adipurush
Gone are the days when ₹ 50 crore was considered a big budget for an Indian film. Today, films meant for streaming are made for twice as much. The biggest Indian films are slowly rivalling Hollywood productions with their budgets and scale. Pretty soon, the mantle of the most expensive Indian film is set to change, as production wraps up on the country's first-ever $100 million production, a magnum opus years in the making. Nitesh Tiwari's adaptation of Ramayan is set to break the record of the most expensive Indian film. The film will be released in two parts. Ramayana Part 1 recently wrapped filming and is now heading into post-production. According to a Bollywood Hungama report from 2024, the film has a massive budget of $100 million, the highest ever in Indian cinema history. This approximately ₹ 835 crore budget for Ramayana 1 exceeds the budgets of Kalki 2898 AD ( ₹ 600 crore), RRR and Adipurush (both ₹ 550 crore). The VFX-heavy Brahmastra Part One is the most expensive Bollywood film made to date, with a reported budget of ₹ 375 crore.
Ramayana Part 1 is being produced by Namit Malhotra, who owns Prime Focus, the world's largest independent integrated media services company. Namit is also the CEO of its British-Indian subsidiary DNEG, which specialises in visual effects. Ramayana is a two-part film based on Valmiki's epic of the same name. The Nitesh Tiwari film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, along with Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. The film's star-studded support cast includes Vivek Oberoi, Rakul Preet Singh, Lara Dutta, Kajal Aggarwal, Ravi Dubey, Kunal Kapoor, Arun Govil, Sheeba Chadha, and Indira Krishnan. The film's first glimpse will be released on July 3. It is slated to be released on Diwali 2026.

Anush Agarwalla on his retired horse Sir Caramello Old: ‘When he hears sound of my car, he still knows he will be fed his favourite apples and carrots'
It is the start of a new friendship for Sir Caramello Old, at age 18. The Olympian horse retired by Anush Agarwalla, after his Dressage swansong at the Paris Olympics, gets along mighty well with another gelding, 19, Flovinos Feinr Kerl, who also rode last competitively in 2024 and was retired by the Indian equestrian. Now that he's relieved of the regimented lifestyle, and not having to walk and jump and trot and look a certain way, Sir Caramello has found liberation, thanks to Anush. And new friends too. 'Sir Caramello Old has made new friends. Earlier, he was on the field only in the morning; now he is out the whole day since his retirement. He goes out from 11 am to 5 pm with Flovionos Feinr Kerl, who was my second reserve horse,' Anush informs, even as he has moved on to competing with new-old stallion Etro, 11. 'It was not a surprise to retire him. He's 18, that was always the plan to retire him after the Olympics. He did his job. My duty is to return him to where he's happy with his friends. I didn't want to push. He's still fit and healthy, and it's not like I'll never see him again. He's one minute away from where I live in Germany,' Anush explained. The Indian rider drops in every second day, still for 20 odd minutes to check on him, though evenings can be chilly to go out rather than the stables. Anush misses the bond they shared. 'For 5-6 years, he knew the routine. Whenever he heard the sound of my car, he could recognise it was my footsteps. He would neigh, and knew I'd be carrying small treats like apples, carrots, and bananas. Just small memories,' Anush recalls. On their finest moment under the Parisian sun, Anush says that remains the highlight in his career, but the lead-up was exceptionally satisfying. 'What defined our bond was the qualification which was secured almost on the last possible day, on 29 December 2023. We went to the biggest shows, and whenever we competed, he was calm and composed. I miss that bond. It was special,' an emotional Anush says. Anush has moved on to younger horses, like Etro who's been with him awhile, as he prepares for the next Asian Games cycle where he first won a team gold and individual bronze medal on a preening, happily pouting Sir Caramello. 'This year we have moved up to Grand Prix level and want to build momentum.' The Indian ace, however, has more choices to pick from – with Straight Horse Floriana and Flynn added to his stables. 'I have 3 top horses ahead of the World Championship. It depends,' he says, not revealing who his choice might be. Caramello, however, will get his apples and carrots, irrespective, Anush has ensured.

IIIT Dharwad to hold 7th convocation today; Director General of CSIR D-G Kalaiselvi to be chief guest
The seventh annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Dharwad, will be held on Friday on its permanent campus at Tadasinakoppa, near Dharwad. Addressing presspersons on Wednesday, Director of IIIT-Dharwad S.R. Mahadeva Prasanna said that Director-General of CSIR and Secretary, DSIR, N. Kalaiselvi would be the chief guest. Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIIT Dharwad and noted industrialist Shridhar Vembu will preside over the ceremony. Prof. Prasanna said 257 graduates and one Ph. D scholar would be conferred degrees during the convocation. The graduating students include 132 candidates from Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) stream, 70 from Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) stream and 55 from Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) stream, he said. He said that apart from awarding various degrees, a number of institutional medals and awards would be be presented to meritorious students. Placements Prof. Prasanna said that over 160 students from IIIT Dharwad had been placed in reputed companies with the highest CTC being ₹71.94 lakh, while around 40 students opted for higher studies in reputed universities in India and abroad. Elaborating on the new initiatives, he said that that a KPTCL-funded consultancy to enhance the performance of high-voltage substation earthing systems had been taken up. An IKS (Indian Knowledge Systems) project supported by the Ministry of Education, focusing on extracting Indic concepts from ancient Indian literature through machine learning models has also been taken up, he said. He said the IKS division of the Ministry of Education had supported multiple long-term research efforts at the institute with a focus on culturally rooted technologies and innovation. Additionally, the institute continues to build its capabilities in wireless communication and AI, he said. Registrar Dr. Muruganatham Ponnusamy and others were present.
