Rochester man faces 9 criminal charges related to child sexual abuse materials
Jul. 3—ROCHESTER — A Rochester man admitted to possessing and disseminating child sexual abuse materials after police searched his residence, according to new charges filed in Olmsted County District Court. Christian Santiago Duran-Ayala, 24, is facing five counts related to disseminating and possessing CSAM, one count of using minors in a sexual performance, two counts related to child solicitation and one count of distributing CSAM via electronic communication, all felonies. According to the complaint, Rochester police received three Internet Crimes Against Children tips on June 6 that contained suspected CSAM. The files were shared within Kik, a messaging service, 52 times between June 2024 and December 2024. Law enforcement found the IP address was registered to apartments in northeast and northwest Rochester. The phone number associated with the address belonged to Duran-Ayala, the complaint said. A search warrant for Duran-Ayala's Kik found 10,000 messages between him and other users. Duran-Ayala was portraying a boy, sometimes as young as 11. According to the complaint, Duran-Ayala would send sexually explicit photos and ask others to send them back. Police searched Duran-Ayala's residence on July 1. The complaint said Duran-Ayala acknowledged that there was CSAM on his devices and that he successfully solicited "numerous minors" to record themselves doing sexual acts. Duran-Ayala estimated receiving more than 50 sexual images and videos from people claiming to be minors, the complaint said. He was released on his own recognizance after his first appearance in court on Thursday, July 3. An initial appearance is scheduled for Aug. 20.

Mitchell man indicted on 44 felony counts related to child sexual abuse
Jul. 3—MITCHELL — A Mitchell man is now facing 44 felony charges, including first- and fourth-degree rape, aggravated incest and the manufacturing and possession of child sexual abuse material, following a new indictment handed down Wednesday by a Davison County Grand Jury. The indictment against Eric Mark Opperman, 48, supersedes an earlier 12-count indictment and adds 32 additional charges. The case now involves three children, all 13 years old or younger at the time of the alleged offenses. According to South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley, the alleged crimes occurred between 2013 and 2025. "These charges reflect our unwavering commitment to protecting our children," Jackley said in a statement. "Crimes of this nature will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." The investigation began after a 13-year-old boy reported to Mitchell police that Opperman had raped him five times, with the first incident occurring when he was 8 years old and the most recent "two or three weeks ago." Police later identified two additional child victims. Court documents show that during the investigation, officers requested access to Opperman's phone, which he initially claimed was broken. The device was later recovered, and after Opperman provided the passcode, investigators found two recently deleted videos allegedly showing him engaging in sexual acts. Opperman appeared in Davison County Felony Court on Tuesday for a motions hearing, where his defense team requested approval to hire forensic computer and phone specialists, as well as a fingerprint expert. The defense also filed a motion to add a co-counsel and requested to move the jury trial from August to October, which the court granted. Opperman's arraignment on the new charges is scheduled for 1 p.m. July 15 in Davison County Circuit Court. If convicted, he faces maximum penalties ranging from 10 years to life in prison, depending on the charge. The case is being investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the Mitchell Police Department. The Attorney General's Office and Davison County State's Attorney will prosecute.

Doctor allegedly staged 4-year-old daughter's death as drowning, arrested
An Oklahoma doctor has been arrested for allegedly murdering her 4-year-old daughter while on vacation in Florida and staging the death as a drowning, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office. Dr. Neha Gupta, a pediatrician from Oklahoma, was arrested on Monday and faces a first-degree murder charge. She is accused of smothering her daughter, Aria Talathi, to death and attempting to cover it up as a drowning, the sheriff's office said in a press release on Wednesday. Back on June 27 at approximately 3:41 a.m. local time, officers were called to a residence in El Portal, Florida, "in reference to a 4-year-old who was found unresponsive within a swimming pool," according to a police affidavit obtained by ABC News. Gupta, 36, directed officers to the backyard of the residence, where they found the child "submerged in the deep end of the pool," the affidavit said. The 4-year-old received CPR and was taken to a local hospital but "despite all life-saving measures," she was pronounced deceased at 4:28 a.m., officials said. Gupta, who shares custody of her daughter with her ex-husband, told authorities that the two traveled from Edmond, Oklahoma, to Miami and rented a short term rental home through AirBnB -- which is where the 4-year-old was found dead. Gupta's ex-husband, Dr. Saurabh Talathi, said he was unaware the child had left the state of Oklahoma and that the two parents were in an "ongoing custody battle," the affidavit said. MORE: Mother charged with murder of 3-year-old daughter after allegedly lying about child's abduction Prior to the incident, the mother and daughter arrived at the rental property on June 26 between the hours of 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. and the child was "tired after a full day of riding jet skis along with spending the day at the beach and was asleep," she told authorities. Gupta told officials she carried her daughter into the residence and woke her for dinner at approximately 9 p.m. The child fell asleep at around 12:30 a.m. and the two "co-slept on a bed located within the master bedroom," the affidavit said. Then, at approximately 3:20 a.m., Gupta claimed she was awakened by an "unidentified noise," realized her daughter was not in the bed and that the glass sliding door leading to the patio was open, the affidavit said. Gupta said that was when she allegedly found her daughter submerged underwater, the affidavit said. She attempted to remove her child from the pool, but was "unsuccessful due to the fact that she is unable to swim," the affidavit said. She told officials she attempted to assist her daughter for 10 minutes before calling paramedics. On Sunday, an autopsy report revealed that the child's lungs and stomach did not contain any water and were considered "dry" -- ruling out drowning as the cause of death, the affidavit said. The medical examiner also noticed "cuts within the mouth and bruising within the cheeks" of the child's face, which is consistent with asphyxiation by smothering, the affidavit said. Officials also determined that the child was deceased before being placed in the pool, the affidavit said. MORE: Mom charged with murder for allegedly drowning 7-year-old daughter: DA The 4-year-old's stomach was also empty, which contradicts the mother's statement that her daughter ate dinner several hours before the incident, the affidavit said. Authorities then concluded that Gupta "attempted to conceal the killing" of her daughter by "staging an accidental drowning within the swimming pool," the affidavit said. Once they obtained an arrest warrant, detectives traveled to Oklahoma City and with the help of local officials, were able to locate and take Gupta into custody, according to the sheriff's office. Gupta is pending extradition to Miami-Dade County where she will be charged with first-degree murder, officials said. It is unclear whether Gupta has an attorney who can speak on her behalf.
