Lando Norris says 'it's just the beginning' as Oscar Piastri put on notice
Oscar Piastri leads the F1 drivers' championship heading into the Austrian Grand Prix but nearest rival Lando Norris is primed to cut that advantage after securing pole position in Spielberg
A beaming Lando Norris said he would "savour the moment" after producing the most dominant qualifying performance Formula One has seen this year. Saturdays have been tough at times for Norris in 2025 but he was more than half-a-second quicker than anyone else yesterday, by far the biggest pole margin of the season so far.
He'll start two places ahead of team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri with Charles Leclerc getting the better of the Aussie in his upgraded Ferrari. But no-one ever looked likely to stop Norris who couldn't contain his smile as he said: "My Q3 run one was good but I knew there was a few places that, if I just got it right, there was quite a bit more time and I did exactly that.
"So I'm very happy, it's been a good day and a good weekend so far. I'll savour this moment. Some of my tougher moments have been in qualifying, so to put in a lap like this one today and to have to performance I've had is pleasing. I want to keep proving it to myself over and over again and, hopefully, this is just the beginning of it."
Piastri never got the chance to challenge as his final run was ruined by a Pierre Gasly spin which brought out yellow flags and forced him to slow. But the affable Aussie rarely loses his cool and simply shrugged: "Sometimes it's just not your day.
"Lando has been very quick all weekend so that would have been a tough challenge, but I think we easily had enough pace in the car this weekend to be on the front row. But I can still have a good race from there. I'm disappointed to have not had that opportunity, but I think there will be opportunities tomorrow so I'll try to take them."
Max Verstappen was another who had his final run ruined by Gasly's unfortunate spin. It left him seventh on the grid, his joint-lowest start of the season so far, with former team-mate Liam Lawson showing up the main Red Bull team at their home race, driving for sister squad Racing Bulls.
But the Dutchman insisted he was never in the fight for what would have been a sixth consecutive pole position at the Red Bull Ring anyway. He said: "In the end, it was not that great for us. FP3 wasn't too bad but somehow in qualifying it all disappeared.
"There was not a single corner where I was happy with the car and that is, of course, a big problem to have in qualifying. Hopefully we can at least be competitive with Ferrari or Mercedes, but with the balance I had in qualifying, that's not going to be great for tomorrow."
George Russell won from pole last time out in Montreal but could only manage fifth yesterday with Mercedes' performance limited on a sweltering Spielberg track. Team-mate Kimi Antonelli could only manage ninth, behind the Sauber of the impressive Gabriel Bortoleto.
He said: "I don't think we could have got anything more from that. Whenever it's hot, abrasive tarmac and high-speed corners, that really plays against us. It's going to be a long race for us tomorrow."

Over the years, he's managed to engage with some illustrious figures, although not everyone is eager to be quizzed on the grid, leading to some awkward and, at times, amusing moments. That included Beckham, whom Brundle caught up with at the 2022 Miami Grand Prix. Brundle was eager to speak to the Manchester United legend - now the co-owner of MLS club Inter Miami - having missed out on a chat with the former England captain at the previous year's Qatar Grand Prix. "I was in Qatar trying to speak to David Beckham and there were two guys man-marking me," Brundle told SPORTbible. "Wherever I went, they were just looking at me. They did not want me to talk to David Beckham on that grid. The World Cup was coming up, wasn't it? That was a little bit scary. And then when I did, I thought, 'I don't know why I bothered,' basically. "I didn't feel good about it, particularly. I don't like bothering people. If they don't want to talk to you, they don't want to talk to you. There are plenty of people who do. "You've got to remember I've been on a F1 grid for 38 years, well over half the life of Formula 1. I've been to well over half of the grands prix in the history of Formula 1, so I feel pretty comfortable in that space. I feel it's my territory." I can't see anybody half the time, I can't see an F1 car sometimes! 'Because it's a bit edgy - and sometimes we fail miserably - people are living it, whether I'm having a good day or a bad day. A look at how Red Bull could look next season as they strive to keep world champion Max Verstappen from Mercedes' clutches amid their continuing second driver issues Speculation over Max Verstappen's Red Bull future continues to rage. Despite having a contract with the team until 2028, the Formula 1 champion continues to give non-committal answers to questions about his 2026 plans. That will be music to Mercedes boss Toto Wolff 's ear, with the Austrian keen to bring him to the Silver Arrows, probably at the expense of Canadian Grand Prix winner George Russell. Rookie Kimi Antonelli, 18, is set to be given more than a year to prove himself. That would be harsh on the King's Lynn driver, who bettered Lewis Hamilton in 2024 and has become the team leader this season. But F1 is a ruthless business, and Wolff, who has already held talks with Team Verstappen, will not pass up the opportunity to land the best driver on the grid. Even Russell, who himself has been linked with Aston Martin, has no qualms about Mercedes' continued interest in his arch-rival. Speaking ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, he said: 'Why wouldn't teams be interested in Max? If every driver had no contracts for next year, Max would be No.1 for every single team. And that's understandable.' That said, Red Bull should be doing everything they can to keep their prized asset, especially given that no one else seems capable of getting the best out of a troublesome car. Here's how 2026 could ideally look for Red Bull... Verstappen signs new deal The Dutchman is already in the middle of a long-term contract, albeit with rumoured get-out clauses. There is technically no rush for the parties to discuss a new deal. But Red Bull should look to tie Verstappen, 27, to a watertight contract that will take him well into his 30s. Not only would that be a boon for Red Bull, there would be the added bonus of team principal Christian Horner getting one over on arch nemesis Wolff. If that deal isn't forthcoming - even if he stays for '26 - the speculation surrounding their leading man will drag on. Tsunoda dropped It feels like half the grid has had a go at being Verstappen's stablemate. Since Daniel Ricciardo made the rash decision to leave for Renault (now Alpine), it's been a poisoned chalice. Yuki Tsunoda is the latest incumbent and while he's faring better than Liam Lawson, who was demoted back to Racing Bulls after two disastrous grand prix, he's been well off Verstappen's pace. With Red Bull refusing to admit that building a car that only Verstappen can get the best out of might be an issue, the beleaguered number two continues to carry the can. Therefore, the popular Japanese driver will almost certainly be discarded at the end of 2025, unless he can up his game. Hadjar steps up The next cab on the Red Bull rank is impressive rookie Isack Hadjar, who has been superb in the sister Racing Bulls team this season. Not only has the Frenchman shown searing pace, he's displayed impressive mental toughness, a necessary trait when you're Verstappen's team-mate. Hadjar endured a nightmare start to 2025, crashing on the warm-up lap in the wet in Melbourne, but has bounced superbly to be arguably the most impressive rookie of the season so far. Hadjar has high-level support in Marko, who has likened him to F1 great Alain Prost. The Red Bull advisor is reportedly already pushing for the 20-year-old to replace Tsunoda, having been impressed with the youngster's consistency.

However, not all have been keen to chat with the 66-year-old, leading to some less-than-stellar interviews. One such instance involved Manchester United legend Beckham, whom Brundle bumped into at the Miami Grand Prix in 2022. The ex-England skipper, who is now the co-owner of MLS team Inter Miami, was attending his local Grand Prix. After spotting him, Brundle made a beeline to grab a quick word with the football superstar. Although he managed to briefly discuss F1's presence in Florida, Brundle later admitted that he was not sure why he bothered. However, it appears he was more determined to speak to the former free-kick specialist, having failed to get a word with him at the Qatar GP that year. At the time, Beckham had accepted a multi-million-pound deal to be a paid ambassador for the Qatar World Cup. Beckham was on the grid at the same time as Brundle, but he was far from alone.
