Man accused of raping teen at Latitude Festival

Yahoo21-05-2025
The jury at the trial of a man accused of raping a teenager at a music festival have retired to consider their verdict.
Alex Stokes, 32, of Burns Road, Wellingborough, denies raping or engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl and engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity and the sexual assault of another 15-year-old girl.
Ipswich Crown Court heard that Mr Stokes had been working as a steward at the Latitude Festival in Suffolk in 2022.
His defence barrister argued that whilst the defendant did have consensual sex with one of the girls, he did not believe she was 15.
While summing up the evidence heard across the trial, Judge Nicola Talbot-Hadley said that one of the girls, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said she and a friend had been at the festival in July 2022 where they started speaking to Mr Stokes.
The teenager said they believed Mr Stokes was a security guard.
The girl said they had been drinking alcohol and told the defendant they were both 15, she said he provided them with more drinks.
She said after kissing Mr Stokes he then asked her to sit on him and he penetrated her, she said it was in a public place and he told her not to get up or security would see and she would be kicked out of the festival.
The court heard that whilst this was happening Mr Stokes had asked the girl to bring her friend closer, he is then alleged to have sexually assaulted the other teenager.
Mr Stokes denied that incident happened with the second girl and said the girls asked him to guess their ages and he said 18 and 19. He said he was not corrected by them and was not told they were 15.
He was arrested on 27 July 2022 and admits initially lying in his first police interview by saying he had not had sex with one of the girls, he said he lied because he was "scared".

Neighbor Rescues Injured Cat—X-Ray Reveals the Unthinkable

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. An act of concern turned into a disturbing revelation when a stray cat turned out far more injured than his rescuer realized. The cat, now named Brewster, was rushed to an emergency vet clinic by a neighbor, where it was revealed that the feline was shot in the leg. The realization led to a plea for help from North Shore Animal League America in a Facebook post, which reached at least 10,000 people who reacted to it. Initially, it was suspected that Brewster had been hit by a car, but X-rays revealed a far more sinister truth: Brewster had been shot, leaving him with a severely fractured front leg. Stock image: A stray cat looks up expectantly. Stock image: A stray cat looks up rescue shared Brewster's harrowing story. "URGENT RESCUE ALERT: Brewster Needs You. Brewster's life nearly ended before it had a chance to begin," it wrote. "His only option would have been euthanasia unless someone was able to where we came in." With his "shattered front leg" and no owner to afford his necessary medical care, Brewster faced the grim prospect of euthanasia. That's when the rescue stepped in, taking the tuxedo cat into its care. He was first brought to its Adirondack campus before being transported to the Port Washington, New York campus. There, a medical team grew determined to do everything possible for his injury. "They are working urgently to stabilize him and explore every option before turning to amputation as a last resort," the post read. The organization emphasized its commitment to the cat, stating, "Brewster suffered for days, but we are committed to his care and his comfort. His recovery will take time, medical expertise, and critical resources. All of which we're committed to providing for this sweet, handsome boy." How Did People React? The story of Brewster's brutal injury ignited outrage and sympathy among Facebook users. Many condemned the perpetrator who appeared to have shot the cat. "Poor Brewster! shoot a poor cat! I hope the perpetrator is caught and serves some serious jail time and fined heavily for this horrible abuse! Brewster is a handsome Tuxie cat with a cute face! Hope he heals up just fine and gets his furever home asap!" Other users shared similar experiences of finding injured strays and praised the rescue's efforts. One person recounted a personal story: "Years ago, we had a stray cat who took refuge in our garage—I left the door open just enough so he could get in—had food, water and a bed. One day, I opened the door and he was waiting for me with blood on his fur. A local rescue group took him in and got him taken care of at the vet. He had been shot, but he was okay. They named him 'Bullet.' He was fostered and ended up being so thankful for the rescue group." The broader issue of animal cruelty and the vulnerability of cats drew passionate responses. "Thank you for helping this fur baby," another commenter wrote. "Wish we could save them I wish 'saving' cats wasn't ever necessary." North Shore Animal League America is urging the public to donate now to help cover Brewster's extensive medical costs, emphasizing their commitment to providing him "the care, comfort, and second chance he truly deserves." Mom dies after tree branch falls on her at daughter's softball camp, PA family says

A family is mourning after they say a woman was hit by a falling tree branch at a softball camp in Pennsylvania, killing her. Gendie Miller and her husband, Bill, were watching their daughter play softball at the Western Pennsylvania College Showcase Camp in McKeesport on July 24, WPXI reported. The couple was sitting under a 'large shady tree since temperatures were in the 90s' while their daughter performed drills before a scrimmage in front of college coaches, according to a GoFundMe page. Then, Bill Miller heard a cracking sound, WTAE reported. 'I said to my wife, 'Let's go.' I jumped out of my chair, felt a small branch of some sort that grazed my leg. And I immediately turned to my right to look back at her, and she was face down with large, multiple branches and limbs,' Bill Miller told the news outlet. Gendie Miller was knocked unconscious. As she was being transported to a hospital, she stopped breathing and was pronounced dead on arrival, the GoFundMe said. 'It's such a crazy, freak accident,' family friend Luka Bompiani told WPXI. 'There's no weather involved, no wind. They were just sitting under a tree watching their daughter play softball.' Nitro Fastpitch 16U Walker said in a Facebook post that the Nitro family mourns the loss of Gendie Miller as it 'is felt through waves of grief and sorrow.' 'We didn't know that could happen so soon. The next few weeks will be tough. I love you Gendie Miller. Until we meet again, I love you forever,' Brandon Bickle, who said Gendie Miller was his aunt, wrote in a Facebook post. McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko said in a statement to WTAE that the city's 'thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.' 'An evening that started like any other, with families and friends gathered in the park for a game, has ended in tragedy after this horrible accident,' Cherepko said, according to the outlet. McKeesport is about a 15-mile drive southeast from Pittsburgh.

Illinois landlord who killed 6-year-old Palestinian-American, injured his mother in hate crime stabbing dies in prison

A landlord jailed for decades after he attacked a Palestinian American boy and his mother has died. Three months ago, Joseph Czuba was sentenced to 53 years behind bars for the attack. He was found guilty in February of murder, attempted murder and hate-crime charges in the death of Wadee Alfayoumi and the wounding of the boy's mother, Hanan Shaheen. The 73-year-old Czuba targeted them in October 2023 because of their Islamic faith and as a response to the war between Israel and Hamas, which started days earlier. 6 Joseph Czuba, who was convicted of murdering a Palestinian American boy and injuring his mother, has passed way at the age of 73. Ahmed Rehab, the executive director of Council on American-Islamic Relations' Chicago office, said in a statement on Saturday that 'this depraved killer has died, but the hate is still alive and well.' Evidence at trial included harrowing testimony from Shaheen and her frantic 911 call, along with bloody crime scene photos and police video. Central to prosecutors' case was harrowing testimony from the boy's mother, who said Czuba attacked her before moving on to her son, insisting they had to leave because they were Muslim. Prosecutors also played the 911 call and showed police footage. Czuba's wife, Mary, whom he has since divorced, also testified for the prosecution, saying he had become agitated about the Israel-Hamas war, which had erupted days earlier. 6 Wadee's father Odai Alfayoumi leaving Will County Courthouse in Joliet, Ill., following Czuba's sentencing on May 2, 2025. Some of the bloody crime scene photos were so explicit that the judge agreed to turn television screens showing them away from the audience, which included Wadee's relatives. The attack renewed fears of anti-Muslim discrimination and hit particularly hard in Plainfield and surrounding suburbs, which have a large and established Palestinian community. Wadee's funeral drew large crowds, and Plainfield officials have dedicated a park playground in his honor.
