'This is not life': Gazans reel from Israeli strike on school-turned-shelter

Young children wandered through the charred shell of what had been a school sheltering displaced Palestinians on Thursday, after a pre-dawn Israeli strike killed 15 people there according to the civil defence agency.
Tattered clothes hung from the blackened exterior of the building in western Gaza City, as rubble still smouldered below in the morning light.
Bloodstains dotted the ground strewn with the remnants of daily life. Clothing, metal chairs, tins of food and part of an electric fan lay amongst the wreckage, AFP footage showed.
"This is not a life," said Umm Yassin Abu Awda, a Gaza City resident who stood amongst mourners at the city's Al-Shifa Hospital following the strike.
"Either you strike us with a nuclear bomb and end it all, or people's conscience needs to finally wake up."
Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military said it "struck a key Hamas terrorist who was operating in a Hamas command and control center in Gaza City".
"Prior to the strike, numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians," it added.
Mahmud Bassal, spokesman for Gaza's civil defence agency, told AFP that most of the 15 killed in Thursday's strike were women and children.
He also reported a large number of injuries in the "Israeli air strike on the Mustafa Hafez School, which shelters displaced persons, in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood".
They were among 69 people that the agency reported killed by Israeli forces on Thursday in the Palestinian territory, where Israel has recently expanded its military operations.
Nearly all of Gaza's population has been displaced at least once during the nearly 21-month war, which has created dire humanitarian conditions for the more than two million people living there.
Many have sought shelter in school buildings, but these have repeatedly come under Israeli attacks that the military often says target Hamas militants hiding among civilians.

Ukraine Attacked With Putin's Largest Barrage Of War Shortly After Trump Call

Ukraine: Russia launched its largest-ever drone and missile attack on Ukraine overnight on Friday just hours after a telephone call between US and Russian presidents ended without any breakthrough. AFP journalists in the capital heard drones buzzing over Kyiv and explosions ringing out as Ukrainian air defence systems fended off the attack. President Donald Trump said he had made no progress with Vladimir Putin on ending the war in a call, as the Kremlin insisted Russia would pursue its war aims. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the air alerts had begun echoing out across the country as reports of the presidents' call emerged. "Yet again, Russia is showing it has no intention of ending the war and terror," Zelensky said on social media. "All of this is clear evidence that without truly large-scale pressure, Russia will not change its dumb, destructive behaviour," he added, urging the United States in particular to ramp up pressure on Moscow. He said that 23 people were wounded in the Russian barrage that the air force said included 539 Russian drones of various types and 11 missiles. A representative of Ukraine's air force told Ukrainian media that the attack was the largest of the Russian invasion. 'Complete disregard' Overnight Russia attacks have escalated over recent weeks. An AFP tally shows Moscow launched a record number of drones and missiles at Ukraine in June, as direct peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow appeared to stall. "Putin clearly shows his complete disregard for the United States and everyone who has called for an end to the war," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga wrote on social media after the attack. In Kyiv, AFP journalists saw dozens of residents of the capital taking shelter in a metro station. Russian attacks escalated as concerns mount in Kyiv over continued delivery of US military aid, which is key to Ukraine's ability to fend off the drone and missile barrages. The US announced this week that it was reducing some deliveries of military aid to Ukraine, in what EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said was a clear signal that the bloc needed to "step up". Trump's view of the call with Putin was unusually bleak. After most of his previous five calls with Putin since returning to power in January he has given optimistic reports of progress towards a deal. But he has shown increasing frustration with Putin after an early pivot towards the Russian leader. Ukraine has also ramped up its drone strikes in Russia, where a woman was killed when a Ukrainian drone crashed into an apartment building, the region's acting governor said.

Palestinian militant group claims direct strike on Israeli military posts: Report

The militant group directly hit key targets, including a command and control centre and an Israeli tank.(REUTERS) The militant group directly hit key targets, including a command and control centre and an Israeli tank. The strike reportedly targeted one of the army's strategic operational hubs in the region. The Quds Brigades also claimed responsibility for destroying an Israeli tank in central Khan Yunis, saying it was hit by two explosives fashioned from remnants of Israeli military equipment left behind during earlier operations. In a separate statement, the group said it joined forces with the Martyr Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades—the armed wing of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Meanwhile, the Israeli military has not immediately commented on the specific claims.

Prada dragged to court, compensation sought over 'Kolhapuri chappals' in 2026 collection

The controversy surrounding Italian luxury fashion house Prada featuring footwear "inspired" by Kolhapuri chappals seems to be snowballing. Days after the brand broke silence amid backlash, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Bombay High Court, seeking compensation for Kolhapuri chappal artisans. A model walks the runway during the Prada collection show at Milan's Fashion Week Menswear Spring / Summer 2026. (AFP) The plea also alleged that the Italian brand copied the Kolhapuri chappals design in the Prada Men's 2026 Fashion Show. However, the brand had earlier issued a statement saying the footwear was "inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear, with a centuries-old heritage". Prada had launched the footwear as 'Toe Ring Sandals', which the PIL alleges bore a strong resemblance, both stylistically and culturally, to the GI-tagged Kolhapuri chappals. Geographical Indication (GI) is a status under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The sandals, priced at over ₹1 lakh per pair, were featured during an international fashion event held in Milan, Italy, on June 22, and have been rebranded under the European label without acknowledging their true origins, the plea stated. 'This Public Interest Litigation seeks directions and appropriate reliefs, including an injunction and damages/compensation for the unauthorised commercialisation of a GI-tagged product, which has caused significant harm to the community traditionally associated with it, particularly in Maharashtra State,' news agency ANI quoted the plea. The plea was filed by Intellectual Property Rights advocate Ganesh S Hingemire on July 2, accuses Prada of misrepresentation, cultural appropriation, and unauthorised commercial exploitation of the Kolhapuri chappal. What did Prada say? Facing backlash over the footwear's stark resemblance to the Kolhapuri chappals, and them being priced at a whopping ₹1 lakh, Prada had issued a statement acknowledging the sandals' heritage. 'We acknowledge that the sandals featured in the recent Prada Men's 2026 Fashion Show are inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear, with a centuries-old heritage. We deeply recognize the cultural significance of such Indian craftsmanship,' wrote Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Head of Corporate Social Responsibility. The brand also noted that that the designs were in the early stages and were not yet approved for production. However, the plea in Bombay High Court seeks a public apology from the Italian luxury brand. The petition argues that sentiments are attached with the Kolhapuri chappals and that the brand's acknowledgement was neither public nor official and was made only after facing significant backlash on social media. "The brand has not yet issued any formal apology along with any damages, compensation and entitled remedy and the statement appears to be merely a superficial attempt to deflect criticism, " read the PIL. It has also called for the implementation of stricter protections for traditional Indian designs and GI-tagged products in India. (With ANI inputs)
