Samsung SDI beats rivals in W1tr government ESS bid

Samsung SDI has secured the lion's share of the 1 trillion won ($725 million) worth of South Korean energy storage systems up for government bidding, leveraging its technological prowess in the advanced battery cells. According to media reports Monday, Samsung SDI won bids for six out of Korea's eight ESS projects, outpacing its domestic rivals — LG Energy Solution and SK On. This was the first round of ESS construction project bids overseen by the government, and covered a total of 3,240 MWh of energy storage in eight regions, including South and North Jeolla Province, North Gyeongsang Province, Gangwon Province and Jeju Island, by the end of 2026. Samsung SDI's dominance in the bidding, accounting for 2,790 MWh of the total storage, was driven by its strengths in 'non-price criteria,' which made up 40 percent of the evaluation. These criteria assessed technological capability and contributions to the domestic industry — areas where Samsung SDI stood out. Among other things, the company produces most of its ESS battery cells at its Ulsan plant, backed by a robust local supply chain, and showcased its latest thermal safety technology as part of the bid. Samsung SDI was reported to have highlighted its thermal propagation prevention solutions by integrating 'enhanced direct injection' technology — its third-generation ESS safety advancement — into the Samsung Battery Box ESS product. This method swiftly reduces the temperature at the heat source in the battery cell after spraying a fire extinguishing agent through pipes connected to the ESS battery module. This innovation prevents heat spread to neighboring battery cells in the ESS device more effectively than the company's previous solutions, which used either a fire-suppressing sheet or directly injected a fire extinguishing agent into the cells. Samsung SDI's SBB has also received global safety certifications, including recognition from UL, a US-based safety certification organization. Industry watchers say Samsung SDI's win in the domestic ESS project is notable as it was accomplished using its high-capacity nickel cobalt aluminum batteries, as opposed to the increasingly popular lithium iron phosphate batteries introduced by its rivals. LFP battery cells are cheaper and are generally considered to be more stable than NCA cells. LG Energy Solution, a pioneer of the ESS LFP battery sector, started mass production of LFP cells in its Michigan plant last month, while forging a 1,000 MWh supply deal from Poland's state-run power company. SK On has completed prototype development earlier this year. However, LG Energy Solution — which previously won 200 billion won and 830 billion won ESS projects for Jeju Island and the Korea Electric Power Corp. — secured two projects in this bid, for Pyoseon in Jeju and Gwangyang in South Jeolla Province. SK On did not secure any contracts in this bid. The results of the first ESS bids will be finalized if no objections are raised by Thursday. A second round of competitive bidding for new contracts is scheduled for the latter half of the year, with further details to be announced by the Korea Power Exchange.

Blackstone bolsters Korea portfolio with 2 logistics centers near Seoul

Blackstone is deepening its presence in South Korea with the acquisition of two last-mile logistics centers in the greater Seoul area. The New York-based alternative investment firm said Monday that its real estate division acquired properties totaling 1.3 million square feet in Gimpo and Namyangju, two of the most competitive infill logistics markets in Gyeonggi Province. The firm said the properties are Grade A facilities — modern, high-quality logistics centers designed for efficient supply chain operations, typically featuring large space, advanced technology and strategic transport access — and are leased to major local and global e-commerce and logistics companies. 'This is a continuation of our commitment to investing in prime Korean assets in fast-growing sectors,' said Chris Kim, Head of Blackstone Real Estate–Korea. 'Logistics is one of our highest-conviction investment themes in real estate globally, and a focus for us in Korea, particularly in Seoul, where last-mile new supply remains extremely limited and vacancy rates are in the low 4 percent range,' Kim stated. 'We are pleased to bring together our global scale and expertise, local insights and asset management capabilities to grow the platform for long-term success.' Blackstone has ramped up its real estate activity in Korea since launching the dedicated team three years ago. Last year, it completed three major transactions, including an investment in a multistory logistics facility in Gimpo and the acquisition of an office building in Seoul's Gangnam district for conversion into a select-service hotel with Travelodge Asia. The firm also finalized the landmark sale of Arc Place, following years of repositioning the asset into a premier office building in central Seoul.

New AI Automation Platform Learns Like a Human--Infofla's Selto V2 Now Available

SEOUL, South Korea, July 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Infofla, a fast-growing AI startup specializing in workflow automation, has launched Version 2 of its flagship product 'Selto', delivering major upgrades that dramatically improve precision, flexibility, and user control. Powered by Infofla's proprietary 'VLAgent' engine—an AI system that combines large language models with advanced image recognition—Selto V2 enables businesses to automate complex digital tasks with human-like adaptability. Unlike traditional RPA (robotic process automation) tools, which often break down when unexpected screen changes occur, Selto can visually recognize and respond to real-time UI changes like pop-ups or layout modifications. "This update focuses on making automation more intuitive and flexible," said In-mook Choi, CEO of Infofla. "With Selto V2, anyone can easily design and manage automated workflows—even across unpredictable digital environments." Selto V2 introduces a new level of intelligence and flexibility for business automation. The upgraded version can now visually confirm what it has learned from screen, making it easier for users to identify and resolve issues quickly. This improvement helps boost reliability and transparency, especially in fast-changing digital environments. The platform also adapts dynamically to conditional scenarios. For instance, Selto can now tailor workflows based on different user types or interface conditions—an essential feature for customer-facing services where one-size-fits-all automation often fails. Infofla has also enhanced Selto's ability to process and reuse external data, enabling seamless input of variable information like customer names or addresses. This makes automations more scalable and personalized without increasing human workload. To support growing enterprise demand, Infofla now provides a robust administrator dashboard and has upgraded Selto's testing environment with enterprise-grade GPUs. This ensures reliable performance during large-scale Proof of Concept trials—especially in industries with high automation complexity, such as finance and insurance. Selto has already been deployed by Korea's Ministry of the Interior and Safety and top-tier e-commerce platforms. Building on that success, Infofla is currently running PoCs with major players in the financial and insurance sectors. With Selto V2, Infofla is moving beyond the limitations of existing RPA, paving the way for broader adoption of practical, accessible AI agents and positioning itself as a next-generation leader in intelligent automation.
